Draft Gems: Chad Hansen

The premise of this thread is to find those draft gems. Those players that somehow fall through the cracks due to other much more prolific athletes. In the 2017 draft, there are some names at this position that have been talked about a lot more than this candidate I'm about to profile.

Enter Chad Hansen.

If you haven't heard of this guy, Its understandable. Not a lot of people watch pac 12 football. The story behind him is intriguing, an underdog from the start. No one gave him an chance much less a scholarship coming out of high school. Until Cal gave him a shot, he was a walk on. Yes. A walk on. Read about it here.

From there the legend of this guy grew and grew. His production speaks for it self.  92 Recpetions, 1249 yards and 11 TD's. Some say it may be lighting in a bottle. Since his first year he didn't amass such numbers. This kid has a lot of intangibles that you don't teach. Speed, hands, height, instinct.

Measurements:

Height: 6' 3

Weight: 215

Speed:

His speed has been clocked recently at 4.41. If he gets a combine invite we'll be able to verify this speed. As far as on tape. On several videos I've seen his speed just jumps out. Especially on screen plays. Once he has the ball in his hands he darts off. I am not sure if this will be enough for NFL CB's, but he looks like a man playing against boys most of the time. I have some videos to back up the claim that this kid has several gears. I had the luck to catch a couple of games last year, against Texas and SDSU.  He put on a clinic against the Longhorns.

It's not a secret. We know it, the rest of the NFL knows it. We. Need. Speed. This team is lacking that spark that takes the top off the defenses that can actually catch. (yes that's a stab at Ginn).

Hands:

In the previous video you can see many of the catches he makes are different. He's simply reliable. He doesn't drop anything and I've searched for his drop percentage. The only thing he dropped was a sick burn on the longhorns with a hook 'em sign then dropping it down. lol

Height:

At 6'3, that's something desirable, especially with Cam newton under center. Cam will never be the most accurate passer in the NFL. He's not pin point accurate but he has been decently accurate before. Not this past season but that's another issue. With Hansens size and vertical. (Hasn't officially taken a vertical yet but I'm estimating in the high to mid 30's maybe breaking the 40' threshold.) his catch radius is huge. Something that is needed. KB, Funchess, Olsen all have huge Catch radius. Olsen has the hands out of them all though. Hansen would have the speed to boot.  In this next break down fast forward to 00:20. Webb is deep inside the endzone and the OC dials up a pass play, very dangerous a because Webb took a shot in the end zone that could have been a safety,. instead Hansen locates the ball and plucks it out of the air at it's highest point, making sure he was still in bounds. Instinct, awareness, other traits you can't teach. Some just have it. Hansen has it.

Minute 1:49 he utilizes his hands to get off press coverage and beats the DB with his step and speed to get past not only the man defending him but this help on the inside. He comes up with the TD with ease.

Through mid video you can also appreciate his blocking. This is an area that he definitely needs more improvement in. He's not the best blocker, he did block but on several he gave up on blocks mainly because he thought the play was dead. Something that can be coached.

The cons would be that in Cal he wasn't asked to run the whole route tree so he may not know it all. Slants, curls, and go routes were his bread and butter, he'd have to learn the whole tree. Also his blocking like previously mentioned.

Work Ethic, measurements, and production are there. There is no denying this kid is special and is being overshadowed by other WR's.

If invited to the combine, keep an eye out for him. Also on his pro-day. As of now he is a second to third say pick. Perfect for that compensatory pick for Josh Norman, barring that Gettleman doesn't trade up for someone else. He could probably be hand late as the 4th round, no many picks away form that comp pick. I expect his draft stock to rise once teams see the tape and if he does perform well in the combine. Especially if he runs a fast forty.

Some of you may say we don't need another Wide out. Competition is never a bad thing. Brown and Ginn are the only speedsters on the roster, even in the practice squad, Byrd and Garrett.

Still rooting for them but the speed issue needs to be addressed.

Maybe Shula learns how to use other plays other than long developing ones to utilize the weapons he already has? Hope he evolves his game planning too.

This is the year we need to adress the deep threat issues. We need other playmakers besides Cam and Greg.

I like this kid from what I've seen. Not as much as Dede Westbrook or John Ross, but this kid looks very promising.

Just a note: Byrd ran a 4.28 on grass at his pro day.

    • Another layer to that is Ive seen Seattle has been in the market for CB help this off-season.   Michael had a higher PFF grade than Horn who got 15 games this season. He wants to be here too, that's a huge bonus for any 5 win team that had awful pass rush.  The 7th rounder Michael Barrett didn't last long on Seattle, he was cut before the season I think and ended up on browns PS. He's already been on 5.......5 teams within one year.......
    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
