Vernon Butler.

I'm sure there's a lot of people like who?  This was some dude we drafted last year in the first round and I think we can give Short assurance for a 5 year deal, lock up Star and trade this youngling for a talent at another position.

We should trade him.

Have you ever heard gettlleman talk about how he wants to build a team? He values a heavy dose of Dline talent and ability to rotate often. Most all of our rotation guys are on the back end of careers, Vernon will be groomed as a backup plan for short at worst. At best he's an affordable option for a few more years as he develops and gives us a deep rotation.

Remeber all the blown 2nd half leads by the defense over the past 2 years? no matter how well Cam and the offense play, it won't do any good if the defense can't close out games. That starts with solid Dline play for 60 minutes and making teams one dimensional.  That's Ron's formula and that's how gettleman will build the team (hopefully)

I always love when you post. It's not very often. It's like when there is a blood moon. The best part is, it takes me a few days to figure out how your thread title relates to the thread. It's kind of like a game, a mystery if you will.

That would be a bad idea. Spend a first and trade for what? A 5th ish one year later....if that. Not smart.

This. He was hampered by injury for much of last season. What could we really expect to get out of him? Right now, we have a promising young three technique DT on a cheap rookie contract. That's worth a lot more than we could get for Butler in a trade. Plus, Short is only franchise tagged at the moment. He may not be here beyond this coming season. We'd look like horses asses if we lost Short after trading Butler for much less than we spent on him in last year's draft.

    • His size will always limit him.  Do t kid yourself
    • When a team has EXPECTATIONS you have to show them that your fandom and praise is EARNED.  People would be mad if the they lost two one goal competitive games like 2023 but they wouldn't have gotten booed out of the building because the effort and competitiveness would be there but to lose in THAT fashion at home with your entire top line going free lance and saying fug this yeahhh.
    • Well with back to back road games to open the season again we really can't afford a "slow start" at least not for the psyche of the fanbase that is already at rock bottom from years of losing. I think that will depend on our approach to preseason this go around. But I do agree the makings of a culture change could be big for us. At the same time we heard talk of this last year and then we got the doors blown off multiple times. I can agree with you it's best to try to maintain perspective until we get closer to the midway point of the season. The main things I want to see early on even if we aren't necessarily winning is spark and toughness from the offense and defense and at least keeping games close.
