Charlotte Observer mock top 8

What separates this mock draft is that The Observer asked other team's newspaper insiders for their opinion.

1. Cleveland Browns

The pick: Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett (Mary Kay Cabot, Cleveland Plain Dealer)

Browns’ needs: Edge rusher, quarterback, safety.

Insider knowledge: Cabot calls Garrett the best player who can make an immediate impact, “whereas the quarterbacks are going to take some time.” The Browns will continue to scout Mitch Trubisky, Deshaun Watson and DeShone Kizer, although Cabot believes Cleveland will be able to get one of those QBs when the Browns pick again at No. 12.

People’s choice: Given Cleveland’s dark quarterback history, Browns fans seem fine the idea of taking Garrett with the No. 1 overall pick.

2. San Francisco 49ers

The pick: Stanford DE Solomon Thomas (Eric Branch, San Francisco Chronicle)

49ers’ needs: Quarterback, wide receiver, edge rusher.

Insider knowledge: As much as first-year coach Kyle Shanahan would like to get rolling with a franchise QB, Branch expects Shanahan to use Brian Hoyer as a place-holder until 2018, when the Niners can go after Kirk Cousins or choose from a deeper QB group. In the meantime, Branch sees new GM John Lynch going defense in his first draft by taking an elite pass-rusher from the Bay area.

People’s choice: Some Niners’ fans seem infatuated with the prospect of taking a skilled-position player such as Fournette or Clemson WR Mike Williams.

Top 8 mock by beat writers

  1. Browns- Garrett
  2. Niners- Thomas
  3. Bears-Hooker
  4. Jags- Allen
  5. Titans-Adams
  6. Jets- Lattimore
  7. Chargers-Peppers
  8. Panthers- Person took Fournette

In that same scenario I'd agree with him. I'm almost 50/50 on Corey Davis and Fournette now myself.

I like Fournette for all the same reasons everyone else does. He's a beast and potential game changer with the ability to take any carry to the house. However the concerns about his ability to play as effectively out of Shotgun the majority of snaps does cause a reason for pause and needs expert evaluation.

I like Thomas too but question his transition to a 4-3 end vs 3-4 end. Either way he's gone in this scenario.

Corey Davis just seems to be exactly what the doctor ordered for our offense. He would be a huge upgrade over Ginn in every category a rookie possibly could except pure speed.  I also believe the departure of Ginn makes WR our biggest immediate need.

Still love Jamal Adams too. He would be a monster upgrade to our secondary. We have a short term fix in Mike Adam's and the D as a whole looks much better on paper for the 2017 season than offense does.

Those are the really the only 4 I can say id be super excited about at 8.

All that link tells me is that Person tends to get most of his Panther's information from reading the Huddle... lol.

Exactly.  Alluding to the horrific drop off after Garrett and Thomas and crapping on Barnett by not even mentioning him in the article is a dead giveaway he gets it all from here.

Won't have to play out of the shotgun if the o-line does their damn job.

    • He’s also 21 years old. I don’t know why fiz is so eager to label him a bust
    • It’s wild to me that so many of you guys are threatened by the idea of an opposing team fan who is polite in 2025. He’s been posting here on and off for years, usually when our teams play each other which hasn’t been for a while. I’d maybe understand this treatment if it was a falcons or saints fan, but packers fans in general are one of the nicer fan bases as long as you aren’t another NFC north team (especially the bears).
    • Some players excel on the big stage, while others freeze and succumb to the pressure. I’m not convinced Cam took a dive. I think he didn’t handle the stage very well. The pressure got to him and he folded. He wouldn’t be the first quarterback or player to struggle in a Super Bowl. Two HOF examples - John Elway and Jim Kelly. The 2002 MVP, Rich Gannon, threw 5 interceptions against the Bucs. Poor performances happen.  Unless of course you believe all these players threw the games they played in, but if that occurred, surely someone by now would have admitted taking a dive? 🤷‍♂️
