The Film Room Ep. 29: Jabrill Peppers Scouting Report

I sense a trend with this guy's videos.

He's acting like he's selling a revolutionary product with each video rather than an analysis on the strengths and weaknesses of each person. He's creating hype over things that shouldn't be hyped, and excuses for things that shouldn't be excused with each person.

I don't hold a lot of water with this guy's analysis.

Mathieu went in the third due to character concerns. Otherwise, he would have been a first round pick.

Character concerns were the #1 reason, but his lack of size and lack of elite timed athleticism were big factors too.

I think a lot of NFL people had serious doubts that he could do in the NFL what he did at LSU at only 5'9" 185. Then he just tested above average in most of the drills. He wasn't elite anywhere. Only put up 4 reps of 225 highlighting the lack of size/strength even more.

But, it didn't matter. He's proven he could make the transition.

I actually like Peppers, not with the 8th pick though. I see him going somewhere in mid-late first. I would love his versatility at the safety position and his playmaking ability on defense and special teams.

Now I wouldn't trade up to get him, but for some odd reason if he drops to the 2nd round which I don't think at all I wouldn't mind finding a way to get him with our 1st 2nd round pick.

Please no positionless players at #8. Right now, Peppers is an athlete first and a football player 2nd. He's going to have to learn a TON at the NFL level. Instant impact special teamer but the jury is out on him finding a full time role on a defense. He may never be anything more than a situational player.

Yea he is a second day pick. I would say mid second to early 3rd round.

I think its more that he's only reviewing prospects in that he likes.

Plus he wasn't exactly head over heels with Cam Robinson (bad fundamentals), Garret Conley (bad hand usage) or that LSU corner he reviewed (to small, not much speed.)

Yep, bottom of the 1st to top of the 2nd seems about right. Someone in that range will roll the dice on his potential.

Would you hate it if we took Fournette and then moved back into the tail of the first to get him?

Because I could see him playing ST this year and backing up both SS and Nickel. And then replacing Adams once he gets his AARP membership.

Honestly, yeah I would. I just don't want to give up assets to move up to take a prospect who in my mind has a lot of question marks in terms of translating to the NFL. BUT, if we were to do that, I'd rather we do it with a defensive prospect. I simply have more confidence in our defensive coaching staff finding a way to use a guy than I do our offensive coaching staff.

For the record, I hated that trade up for Funchess. When we jumped up, I was hoping it was for Jaelen Strong. I'm slightly comforted by the fact that he's been a bust too up to this point.

Houstons qb situation has been trash can though.....

    • Let's say we take care of business against the Bucs and/or the Falcons take care of the Saints and we lock that 4th seed for the playoffs. Who do we root for this Sunday in the NFC West matchup with Seahawks at San Francisco winner takes the NFC West division. A Seahawks win would mean we face the Rams at home or with a 49ers win we host the Seahawks again.  Which opponent would most prefer? In the earlier Rams game we won primary due to turnovers specifically Mike Jackson pick-6 in combination with a good running game with Chuba and Rico whereas we kept the Rams offense off the field and Bryce was able to connect on two big 4th down throws for touchdowns. However when the Rams offense was on the field they pretty much got whatever they wanted, Williams and Corum gashed us in the run game, and we had no answer for Devonte Adams. Granted whe were missing some pieces on defense with Horn and Moehrig. Against Seattle our defense held it's own for the most part, it was our offense and turnovers which aided in the Panthers loss.  Seattle was the most stingy, best tackling defense the Panthers have played all season, and when we turned Darnold over we didn't do much with it.  The offense had no answers for what the defense was throwing at them and apparently were caught off guard by the amount of man coverage the Seahawks played.  With all that who do you think would be the better matchup the 2nd time around? I trust Stafford far more than I do Darnold, both running games are on par with each other, of the defenses Seattle has the dominant unit.  I personally prefer Seattle again, that would mark their 3rd consecutive road game, we've just played them, so we know exactly what to expect, and I feel Caneles should be able to come up with a better scheme to counteract what the Seahawks defense was doing, and we may be able to trip Darnold up, I don't want to try and win another shootout against the Rams.
    • I remember watching him at bama and thinking he throws a lot of wobbly non spiral balls that have very little velocity. Knew it would be a real problem in the NFL and it is.
    • His wife makes great meatballs though. To be fair, he didn't hire himself here. He dazzled and bamboozled them with what they wanted to hear. He was going to be an innovative, program-builder, culture-installing football genius. They ate it up like those fabulous meatballs.
