One note, I think 2016 could (Butler, Worley and Bradberry) and I think 2014 did. 2014 got us Benjamin, Turner and Norwell. It also got us "not good and not long term" starters in Boston, Bene, Ealy and Philly. 3 good long term starters and some depth/games started. Probably our best overall draft in a while, even though 3 of the depth guys are now gone. Some of that (Ealy and Philly) has to do with bringing in FAs and some has to do with just getting worse (Bene). Boston is a good backup S, just not a starter.

Norwell was undrafted. We could have traded up for more a higher pick and still got him.

That's actually my whole point. The draft is fuging tough to nail. The odds are against every team going into it. To me it just seems the success rate outside of the top 100 players for any team is around 10% at best.

The odds still suck inside the top 100 ( less than a 50% success ratio) but somewhere inside that top 75 or so is where I think the odds increase dramatically in your favor.

I wish there was an easy way of seeing how many undrafted players become starters vs players taken outside of the top 100.

Until Gettleman drafts the new core of this team I'm not going to hate on Hurney. Hurney had quite a few out of the park draft picks in the early and late rounds. I just can't hate a guy that drafted Cam and Luke back to back while swindling Greg Olsen away from Chicago. The we have picks like Greg Hardy and Josh Norman in later rounds helped the team go on a run in 2013 and '15.

I read an article the other day that had the Panthers as one of the top five best drafting team in the last five years. However the best pick mentioned was Luke, while also noting Josh Norman. Unless Gettleman's picks start producing or unless Gettleman finds a few all-pros this year then the Panthers look to drop to somewhere in the middle of the list at best, and to the bottom if this draft doesn't pan out.

I count undrafted guys, that is one reason I like DG. 2014 was a solid draft and we even got Norwell and Philly for basically nothing. That said, that might mess up your statement and it's really hard to find good info on undrafted guys (historically). DG's been pretty solid at UDFAs. Seattle has made a living off of supplementing their team with UDFAs. I think in one game I heard the announcer say that almost half their 53 was undrafted, something really high. Heck the CB New Orleans has been trying to pry from NE (Butler) was undrafted.

It wouldn't surprise me to see UDFAs having way more impact than 6th/7th rounders. As DG said, he's trying to find guys with something they do well in the late rounds and I think solid college guys who aren't spectacular at anything go undrafted. The key is, they were solid college players but maybe not flashy.

I'll be honest though, this is how the guy below goes undrafted:

Despite his decorated college career, Norwell was considered a borderline NFL prospect because of lingering questions about his athleticism. Greg Cosell made the comparison to the San Francisco 49ers Alex Boone, who was also an undrafted free agent coming out of Ohio State because of their competitiveness, strength, and size.

Norwell attended Anderson High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was rated as a four-star recruit by Rivals.com and the 59th best player in the country.

College career[edit]

Norwell played college football at Ohio State University from 2010 to 2013. He started 39 of 50 games. During his true freshman year, Norwell was the primary backup at right tackle in 2010 and played in 11 games. He named to a Big Ten all-freshman team by Rivals.com. During his sophomore year, Norwell started 13 games and started at both the left guard and left tackle positions. He was named honorable mention all-Big Ten. During his junior season, Norwell played more downs than any player on offense with 862. The Ohio State coaches named him co-offensive lineman of the year. He helped Ohio State average 242.2 yards per game rushing, ranking 10th nationally in 2012, lead the Big Ten in scoring at 37.1 points per game, and was named first team all-Big Ten. During his senior season, Norwell was named to the preseason watch lists for the Outland Trophy and Rotary Lombardi Award. He helped lead the Buckeyes to rank fifth nationally in rushing in 2013 (308.6 yards per game) while setting school records for points scored (637), touchdowns (87), and touchdown passes (38). Ohio State also averaged an all-time program high 6.8 yards per carry and the offense was fourth nationally in the red zone percentage (60 of 63; 0.952). Norwell was named to the first team all-Big Ten Conference for the second consecutive season.[1] Norwell graduated in May 2014 with his degree in communications.

This is bullshit. You ever heard that man talk? There is no way he got a degree in communications.

It's sad how poor this organization drafts considering they believe in the whole "build from within" method.

Don't quote me and give me the Hurney v DG junk either. They both f'n suck and if you're standard for success is just to better than Hurney than you don't know what success looks like.

By all means, show us what the continuous drafting success of a single GM looks like

We got 4 solid years at best between both Norman and Hardy out of a combined 10? Hell, one isn't even in the league anymore. Not impressed

Letting Norman go and the Hardy situation doesn't change the caliber of the players they were.

Cam, Luke and Olsen aren't bad either.
