Basically, you've got 35 guys trying out for spots that at this point don't even exist.

In order to get a shot, they'll have to show they're better than someone we've already got.

Side Note: Chris Manhertz' little brother is one of the tryouts.

Terry Williams was an ANIMAL at ECU.  Best Defensive Lineman since Linval Joseph.  He played for the Bears last year, I thought.  Maybe practice squad.  The guy is insanely fast and athletic for 300+lbs... ran a sub 5.0 40...

I believe we have three spots. We were at 80 before the draft, drafted 7 players (87), signed 5 UFDAs (92), waived Tyler Patmon (91), cut 5 players (86), and claimed Zach Moore (87).

I've heard of two of them. QB from Texas, David Ash, who sucked(QBs are required to do the drills) and the UDFA TE, Jake McGee, from last year.

Not that it means anything since the chances of any of these guys being on the 53 is about .001% but there has usually been higher name recognition on this list in years past.

I think it's very cool that we've got the son of a player on the team from 1995-97 trying out.

Quote

Linebacker Kyle Kragen is the son of former Panthers defensive lineman Greg Kragen, who played for Carolina from 1995-97.

I disagree... There are only so many spots on the team that are considered locks. Yes, these 35 tryout players should not, in theory, be better than any player currently on the roster but you can't count anyone out. You can measure, but can't teach speed but you can't measure or teach heart.

Here's the list sorted by positions.   LOL.  Linebacker!!  (But we do need to restock the PS.  Pretty much all the LBs we have on the roster currently have been on the 53 in the past, so this isn't a huge surprise).

Fair enough.

I remember Kragen. He was an average sized DE type playing the role of a 3-4 nose guard, but he was so ferocious that he worked in that role even when he shouldn't have.

Just for the heck of it, since I had the spreadsheet handy, I went and looked back at last year's tryout list.  We also had 35 invitees.  We signed 5 after minicamp.

We were heavier at OT (5), S(4).  LBs were only 4 last year.   Other positions were pretty similar.  We did have 2 QBs and 2 Ps last year...

    • I mean he’ll get humbled at some point and realistically speaking a top 10 pick in his 4th year vs. a rookie should be capable of doing that. He’s got the right attitude though. I’m rooting for both and hope Princely is right and he’s just THAT good and Ickey is great, too.
    • Alex Zietlow @alexzietlow05 · 13m Andy Dalton to Hunter Renfrow is alive and well today. Latest was a corner route completion to 11s. The 2021 Pro Bowl receiver is having himself a day.   Mike Kaye @mike_e_kaye · 14m Hunter Renfrow highlight reel is growing and growing this week: He catches a beautiful sideline sling by  Andy Dalton in 11 on 11 drills. #Panthers   Mike Kaye @mike_e_kaye · 12m Another catch in the corner of the end zone off a throw by Dalton   Alex Zietlow @alexzietlow05 · 8m Matthew Wright took kicks today on the skinny posts. Andy Dalton still holding. The NFL journeyman goes 3-for-5, missing his second and fourth attempts. (The distance got further and further, as usual.)
    • Mike Kaye @mike_e_kaye · 2h Limited contact without pads always favors the edge who wins with speed. Princely has had a royal start but I wouldn’t crown anyone or send anyone to the guillotine just yet.   https://x.com/i/status/1949111745273897042     Alex Zietlow @alexzietlow05 · 58m Tetairoa McMillan with the nice catch from Bryce Young; then Ja’Tavion Sanders route. Dave Canales hanging out with the QBs and receivers right now.   Joe Person @josephperson · 51m Mike Jackson with some terrific coverage on Tetairoa McMillan on a deep ball in 1v1s.   Mike Kaye @mike_e_kaye · 46m One on one coverage drills against Jimmy Horn look unfair. He’s beating fellow rookies by four or five yards. Latest victim is Trevian Thomas. Horn jokingly jogs to the end zone and dose a tumble dive. Funny stuff.    Mike Kaye @mike_e_kaye · 40m Bryce Young with excellent placement on a throw to a well-covered Xavier Legette (vs. CSW I think) who catches the ball cleanly and sprints for a huge gain up the field in 11.   Joe Person @josephperson · 39m During a break in practice, a whole bunch of guys are cramming into the cold trailer. Almost like clowns in a funny car. Related: it’s 90°, feels like 96.   Alex Zietlow @alexzietlow05 · 39m About half the team piles into the cooling trailer at the approximate halfway point of practice. Temps approaching 100 degrees here in Charlotte NC.   Alex Zietlow @alexzietlow05 · 37m Bryce Young first two 11s series: -Pass deflected at LOS -Chuba run middle -Rico run left -Bubble route to H Renfrow Then: -Run left Chuba -Young bootleg, shakes a defender in backfield, finds Xavier Legette on a crossing route, great completion -Rico run right
