2016. The year every Panther fan wants to forget.

From the close games, the injuries, to finishing off with a 6-10 record, it was a very disappointing finish after an unforgettable 15-1 run. Cam Newton and the offense  regressed, with injuries sprinkling everywhere. Couple that with WRs that scare no one, and you just stirred up a recipe for disaster.

Many would say one of the primary causes is Cam himself. After all, he's inaccurate, isn't he? He was erratic and making wild throws all the time, so I mean he's got to be the cause of it all, right?

That's what the media would say.

Jonathan Kinsley - author of the Deep Ball Series - has a different take. A guy who analyzes All-22 Film on various players, he saw a QB who had another stellar season while everything crumbled around him. He argues that Cam Newton's 2016 was great, and that injuries, WRs, and other factors were the real reason for a "regression."

Kinsley decided create a twitter thread on the topic; highlighting Cam Newton's countless insane throws, and why so many factors hindered what could've been a memorable season from Cam.

This will be a big breakdown. A lot of plays to look over, and a lot of good stuff. So without further ado, here's Cam's 2016 season in All-22 GIF Form (GIF credit all to Kinsley. Wish I had All-22 myself, but I don't, so this will make due):

All-22 Breakdown

When you look at Cam Newton's season, it really isn't as bad as everyone is making it out to be.

Offensive line issues were clearly a huge role in Cam Newton's suffering. Add the fact he had wide receivers who cannot get separation, it's easy to see why Cam's life was miserable.

The following goes all the way until the Chargers game, marking the timeline of when Cam Newton was healthy. A look at a spectacular season overshadowed by offensive woes everywhere.

This is the real Cam Newton, and this is what he really did in 2016.

Panthers VS Broncos

Beginning with the Broncos, Cam Newton made magic. Even under heavy bombardment from the healthy, stout defensive front of the Broncos, Cam Newton prevailed.

Newton's poise is like no other. He remains confident even against great odds. When the Panthers o-line was under great distress, Cam Newton refused to panic. He remained calm, and found a way to turn the situation into a positive.

5926196bd9426_CamNewton1.gif.42edc6179253fea2a25b911d292b64dd.gif

Cam Newton diagnosed the blitz and scrambled away. Olsen recognized the Broncos backfield locking down all available receivers, leaking out as an option for Cam. Newton found his favorite TE and turned a negative into a really good play.

Newton never panics. The Panther's offensive line was not playing well that night, yet Cam doesn't freak out. He kept on making play after play.

5926198470bf0_CamNewton2.gif.8151b1888a2bd25431d2e668e4572fe2.gif

Newton was able to evade what should've been a sure sack from #94 and find his outlet for a positive play. Plays like this are what make Cam Newton special.

Cam Newton had a really good game against the Broncos. Leading a last-minute clutch drive, the Panthers looked like they were ready to hit the league with a bang. Of course, Gano missed the FG, beginning the mess you call the Panthers 2016 season.

Panthers VS 49ers

Against the 49ers, Cam Newton shone. Although the start would be a tad slow, most of the game featured Cam Newton doing Cam things. The Panthers QB looked just like any other elite QB in the league. His timing was impeccable; his progressions flawless.

The 49ers helped bring out Cam's best.

Cam Newton had to deal a lot with his receivers not getting much separation. This was evident all throughout his 2016 season. Even so, Cam Newton would breakout against the 49ers and make some MVP like throws.

59261dd3ae84c_CamNewton3.gif.8ddc7931105f3190758c0dc7982f6229.gif

You cannot tell me that Cam Newton is not accurate when you see him make plays like this. Against a corner with maybe a quarter of a yard of separation by the time the ball got near the WR, Cam Newton placed it perfectly in his hands.

When Cam actually has the time to go through his progressions, he will punish any defense. Reading through what was going on throughout the field, Cam Newton stood tall and poised as he delivered a strike on an unbelievable throw to another WR with a DB draped all over him.

59261df03d0b8_CamNewton4.gif.bcfb626983b3a31d25c037fcebc83163.gif

With barely a yard of separation at most and a DB gunning right to his WR, Cam Newton placed the ball perfectly where only his WR could catch it. A completely unbelievable throw that Cam made on a regular basis.

When you look at Cam Newton's deep balls, they truly are special. Once again, you have another wide receiver who barely has an inch of separation. The corner was all over him, and any mistake in throw would've resulted in an immediate interception.

Well, safe to say Cam Newton hit it right on the dime.

592620d734788_CamNewton5.gif.06e77bb21c8de6a370e6d4cb20b8aac2.gif

An unbelievable throw. A beauty to watch unfold. Cam Newton just places it right where it needs to be for a solid big play. Not many quarterbacks can do this. With wide-outs barely getting any separation at all, Cam Newton was still able to deliver.

Cam Newton's rocket for an arm would also help him place needles in haystacks. If you asked me to explain how Cam Newton defied the laws of physics and reason in this play, I would be unable to answer. This is completely unbelievable.

59262101f0c8a_CamNewton6.gif.c6d5c3c28c7faf636c7a243488e9c1a4.gif

He fit in a ball between three defenders in total. Nothing more to say other than it was unbelievable.

The Panthers would finish off against the 49ers with a large score of 46-27. Cam Newton looked like an MVP on the field, and the offense was gelling.

Panthers VS Vikings

This game went well until it didn't go well. Oher had a concussion in between the 49er game and Viking game that went unnoticed for weeks, and Cam paid the price. Nevertheless, there were plenty of positives that came out of Cam's play that still make you wonder how he's not a first ballot hall of famer already.

Cam Newton threw some pretty unreal throws that game. In a tight window with two defenders ready to gun down the ball, Cam Newton made a spectacular throw. He timed the ball perfectly and executed the play well.

59262280de3f4_CamNewton7.gif.0ccfbbbb24189e603eabc2f194f87cd8.gif

You see a Viking DB ready to run right over and snatch the ball, yet his arrival was too late. Cam's bullet streamed right to where it needed to be without a second to waste, completing a really outrageous play. Cam Newton showed great awareness and timing, creating a solid completion.

Cam Newton just knows how to place the ball right. He acts like there's no corner near the guy he's targeting. Cam Newton throws a beauty to his receiver in the path of a corner. The corner couldn't keep up, while Cam's receiver was in just the right spot.

592623d3acdc1_CamNewton8.gif.80993980e649b550cd9be60d8dc4bd54.gif

Just inches away from the Viking corner, Cam's receiver did his job. Catching the football where Cam wanted him to catch it, even with a Viking DB so close to it. It's throws like these that make you wonder what this season could've been.

The Panthers would lose that game and Michael Oher to concussion protocol.

The beginning of the Panthers o-line collapse.

Panthers VS Falcons

It was a pretty pathetic game from all counts. Our defense looked like elementary schoolyard kids going against a bunch of highschoolers, and Remmers was about as helpful as swiss cheese.

Even so, Cam Newton still made some amazing plays.

Under a very creative blitz by the Falcons, Cam Newton was under pressure. A Falcon defender was gunning straight for an unguarded Newton, and any other QB would've likely given up. Even against the pressure, you never once see Cam Newton falter or cave in.

592626ae0050b_CamNewton9.gif.404362176f53033fb743aa32b8c41a0e.gif

That was like a freight train going right after Newton, yet he never panicked. He threw the ball and took the hit like the man he is. A completely and utterly amazing way of completing a pass. Stuff that only Cam Newton does.

Oh, and yet again we get another one of those "needle in the haystack" passes in this game. Cam Newton throws a dart on the bullseye, hitting his guy Greg Olsen right in the nick of time. With three defenders surrounding him and one just centimeters from touching the ball, it's a miracle this play worked out at all.

592627f5d5f62_CamNewton10.gif.9ba9239c3bc4884d8640219a0e048ba0.gif

Just try telling me Cam Newton is inaccurate with a straight face. Just try.

As you all know, Cam Newton gets hit by Deion Jones as he attempts to rush in for a touchdown. Newton would get a concussion, bringing him out of the game against the Buccaneers the following week.

The Panthers went on to lose against the Falcons.

Panthers VS Saints

Oh boy, this game was fun, and not so much in a good way. From Zach Sanchez attempting to play corner, to having our wide receivers throwing passes, this game was another "exhilarating" one against the Saints. The Panther's o-line kept crumbling like crackers, and Remmers was LOL.

Cam Newton still had plenty of bright moments.

When faced with condensed pockets, Cam Newton knew how to evade danger. After all, having Remmers as your LT will likely get any QB to scoot quickly away from his side at any given time. Hit patience, maneuverability, and awareness was immaculate, resulting in a completion.

592629db81186_CamNewton11.gif.c4763fe1c97b34d7e6c5c5375bcd384f.gif

He still made insane plays even when everything was collapsing around him.

When Cam Newton had dozens of Saints defenders after him, he simply used his legs. Keeping watch downfield at the endzone, Cam made a beautiful completion to a Panther WR, resulting in a touchdown.

59262b5e907aa_CamNewton12.gif.b8aed2a2f07d77664bdb526c8f78ed80.gif

His running and athletic ability is just beyond amazing. Cam Newton keeps on making play after play when things should've gone downhill. As bad as 2016 was, it could've been a whole lot worse were it not for Cam Newton.

Oh, and about Cam Newton being inaccurate...

59262be550f81_CamNewton13.gif.e427f9277b5fb1c5545576bbc9db9a07.gif

Cam's timing on the throw was immaculate. Flies right by the Saints defenders for a perfect pass to Olsen. A completely beautiful pass and play that seems to come naturally for Cam Newton. Unlike Matt Ryan, Cam Newton commonly threw to WRs who weren't wide open most of the time.

Oh, and there was this...

59262c9d51384_CamNewton14.gif.c491e863ed031eb28008c2bf01db59a0.gif

It's safe to say Cam Newton did his best to make our o-line look competent. Getting out a throw before being bombarded by Saint defensive linemen.

That was embarrassing.

The Panthers would lose in a close one 38-41; same score as 2015's outcome in the dome, with the teams switched.

Panthers VS Cardinals

Straight out of the bye week, someone injected some serious juice in our defense. Star Lotutelei was the star, amassing 3 sacks against Palmer, with our offense making work and doing good things.

Cam Newton would do fantastic.

When the opportunity presented itself, Cam Newton was ready to turn on the jets. After all, the Cardinals defense presented a perfect opportunity for Cam Newton to run right through them. Hitting feet on turf, Cam ran right through the Cardinals to gain a huge chunk of yards.

59262e2d190e1_CamNewton15.gif.1977b54e63ce75eb916b3b524fff05c0.gif

Cam Newton's running ability is what makes him special. Being able to run and power through defenses is what makes him one of the NFL's biggest threats as a QB.

Can we all just take a moment to appreciate the fact Jonathan Stewart is on our team? Had it not been for him, Cam Newton's season may have been a lot more grim. In the following play, Stewart shines as he sniffs out a defender while the rest of the o-line crumbles.

59262ec5cb763_CamNewton16.gif.175f27bcf9591c23811afb1f034fa2ee.gif

Newton never lowers his eyes nor flinches. He handles the situation well, coming out with a solid pass. His o-line may have crumbled, but Cam certainly did not.

The Panthers would go on to annihilate the Cardinals, demoralizing the team that lost to them in the 2015 NFC Championship once more.

Panthers VS Rams

If you didn't get the memo that our o-line sucked, you could really tell they did in this game. Jonathan Stewart wasn't able to do much at all in the run game, and the Rams defense nearly put our offense in a stalemate against their team. The fact Ryan Kalil got hurt did not help matters either.

Cam Newton had some good moments.

Newton will probably be like one of those grannies who loves to knit when he retires. He seemed to be a natural when it comes to threading the needle, and this throw was certainly no exception.

tR3vfMu.gif

He heaves a beautiful ball between two Rams defenders. Strikes Kelvin Benjamin right where the ball should go, and leaves the crowd speechless.

Of course, you once again see our o-line make a fool of themselves and Cam having to make them look good.

5926312b41291_CamNewton17.gif.3f33a149f97a335081ff3c3df201ebdc.gif

Another beautiful work of art from Newton. His pocket awareness is stellar. With guys all over him, Cam Newton makes the throw just in time to prevent what should've been a quick and easy sack for the Rams.

The Panthers would win in a slow, but steady game.

Panthers VS Chiefs

The Panthers began with a huge lead in the first part of the game, then blew it.

Even so, there were plenty of instances where Cam Newton shined.

Cam Newton is a huge man. Trying to take him down is the equivalent of taking down a bear barehanded. It is just not going to work out in your favor at all.

cam-newton-carries-3-guys-on-way-to-td.gif

Cam Newton carries three defenders on his back for an incredible touchdown. Pounding right through them as if they were dummies, Cam Newton made work and got to his prize. A beautiful sight to behold from the league MVP.

Once again, our o-line sucks and Cam Newton has to bail them out. In another condensed pocket, Cam Newton does masterful work at finding a way of making plays.

592633b616299_CamNewton18.gif.233193295ebbe1a5acc2c944b4bed024.gif

Staying steady in the pocket as everything closed around him, Cam Newton didn't flinch or falter, doing masterful work at finding his WR, who yet again didn't get much separation. A common theme in Cam's 2016 season seems to be condensed pocket passes, and he passed each and every test.

The Panthers would choke the game in embarrassing fashion, so you can kiss the Panthers playoff hopes goodbye at this point.

Panthers VS Saints Part 2

If you really thought the Panthers would let the Saints go 2-0 against the Panthers in 2016, well that's about as likely to happen as Drew Brees retiring with another Superbowl  ring on the Saints.

The team as a whole did good, aside a slippery offensive start. Bradberry was a beast, Butler blocked a kick, and our defense ate Brees for lunch. Sadly, Kuechly got concussed for the rest of the season, but there were still plenty of positives from that game.

Cam Newton didn't do half bad either. O. When Bradberry got fouled for Kuechly's return on a blocked FG, the offense had to take the field. Cam Newton got an opportunity to make a highlight reel play on a deep pass.

Let's just say he was successful.

5926368415a4e_CamNewton19.gif.f0ad1d745d7381cf97161fa25269077b.gif

On a beautiful catch and pass from Cam Newton to Ted Ginn, his deep ball hit the mark for a touchdown. No quarterback in the league can do what Cam does with consistent precision when it comes to deep balls, and stuff like this is beautiful.

Oh, and another pin the tail on the needle while being surrounded and smothered in another condensed pocket. Jeez does it get any better than that?

592637333200a_CamNewton20.gif.205d1c0fdfa6810e66da36d9549594a8.gif

Puts the ball right on the dime in another tight window while being pressured from all sides.

The Panthers squash the Brees led Saints and leave them out to rot out on the BoA parking lot.

Panthers VS Raiders

If only Rivera wasn't so stupid and actually lived up to his "Riverboat Ron" name. Instead, we elected to try our gassed and tired defense on the field rather than have Cam go for it on 4th down on a very good drive, so that was fun.

On one amazing play, Cam Newton helped inject fire into the offense with a picture perfect pass to Ted Ginn. Ginn never broke stride as Cam threw him a beauty; burning through the Raiders defense for an easy touchdown.

592639388ab34_CamNewton21.gif.f3b80a727916f5a611471cbeaddd6255.gif

Of course, that wasn't enough, as the Raiders came back in the 4th quarter. To rub it all in, Derek Carr played with a broken finger, so that's no fun.

Panthers lost.

Panthers VS Seahawks

Oh, this game. The one where Ron Rivera went crazy once again and benched Cam Newton for the first series for wearing the wrong tie or something. I don't remember. I just know it was absolutely stupid to sit your MVP like that during any game of the season.

To be honest, the Panthers looked like a 7th grade middle school team trying to play in the NFL. They were downright awful. Nevertheless, some positives from Cam's play can be taken from that game.

For example, Cam Newton's laser target accuracy. For those of you who say Cam is a terrible passer, your argument is invalid as of right now.

59263af6e5243_CamNewton22.gif.e419444912cd1a03bd2f79a456c1a432.gif

Honestly, is Cam even human? No one - and I mean no one - should be able to make passes like these on a consistent basis. This isn't even a once in a blue moon type of thing. This is a common near-every-game occurrence. This should never have been on target at all, yet Cam makes it happen.

Of course the Panthers were murdered, as Kurt Coleman was injured and others.

Panthers VS Chargers

The Panthers would come back in Charlotte showing that they still had a lot left in the tank. They came out and played hard against the Chargers. Shaq Thompson got an interception, and so did Daryl Worley. The defense played lights out, and Cam Newton was no slouch either.

Once again, you see Cam Newton do Cam Newton things, and this amazing scramble was no exception. It was a beautiful sight to see.

5926423b7d6f7_CamScramble.gif.2ea0db14446f2f954e6f0d0525e8e2e5.gif

This should've been a huge sack for a large loss. The O-line did what it was known best for; crumbling. This forced Newton to retreat to the 29 yard line - 19 yards away from the line of scrimmage - and maneuver his way around a ton of angry defenders.

To put it short, he turned this into a five yard gain.

Oh, and Cam Newton is still deadly accurate.

59263ce40b00e_CamNewton23.gif.4b119bb7fc7a7edaa9de6d566f0e452b.gif

It's just amazing how many of these passes you'd see in Cam's film. It's like it comes naturally for him; putting the ball right through the tips and edges of defenders. This isn't normal for any QB to do on a regular basis.

Of course, Kelvin Benjamin later nearly fumbles the football, so Cam had to sacrifice his shoulder after taking a hard hit to the ground after trying to knock over the returner. Yet people still bring up Cam's fumble in the SB and act like he doesn't try/has heart.

iQ8xvGghxWtyM.webp

Nevertheless, the Panthers won that game, even though Cam's rotator cuff got torn. He would continue to play, but his inaccuracy shot up like a rocket due to the fact he could barely throw.

Cam still had some unbelievable throws in that stretch, but a lot of other bad ones too. I don't feel they are indicative of what Cam truly is, hence why they're not included.

Anyways Chargers were made into Bolt stew.

The end.

Conclusion

Cam Newton's 2016 season may have not been his best, but it still was massively underrated. Film shows a lot more things than simple stat sheets do, and Cam Newton was near damn amazing. If our o-line and offense been any better, Cam Newton would be clear-cut MVP over Matt Ryan and likely on its way to Houston.

He was that good.

The film analysis above proves that Cam Newton was more than a stat sheet. These just show how underrated Cam Newton has been in 2016, and what our season could've been like.

Extra Stats On How Good Cam Newton Is

To take a look at how efficient and amazing Cam has been lately, check out these stats from the pantherswire:

In this group, Newton ranks second in total yards and second in total touchdowns while throwing the fourth-fewest number of interceptions. Most interestingly, his Approximate Value (AV) is far and away the best of the bunch.

To bring it to earth, @tiger7_88 offers a very simple explanation and breakdown of Cam Newton and Dan Marino in comparison:

Quote

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/N/NewtCa00.htm

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MariDa00.htm

Cam's career completion %? 58.4%

Marino's? 59.4%

Cam's career Yards per Attempt?  7.4 yards

Marino's? 7.3 yards

Cam's career interception %?  2.7%

Marino's? 3.0%

Cam's career passer rating?  86.1

Marino's? 86.4

Cam's career TD %?  3.6%

Marino's?  4.0%

Here's a weird number... in 6 seasons, Cam has been sacked 221 times.  Marino was sacked 270 times in 17 seasons.  Almost as if Marino (who couldn't scramble if his life depended on it) had a MUCH better OL than Cam has had.  (Marino was sacked 3.1% of his passing opportunities... Cam? 8.0%.  Holy poo.)

In Dan Marino's first 6 years, he was responsible for 199 TDs.  Cam?  184 TDs.  That's a difference of 2.5 TDs per year.  Over six years, this is a very small difference and margin.

But in Dan Marino's first 6 years, he was responsible for 103 interceptions, and 43 fumbles (146 total).  Cam?  78 interceptions and 38 fumbles (116 total).  That's a difference of 5 interception/fumbles per year.

So in Marino's first 6 years, he'd give you 2.5 TDs more per year than Cam, but he'd also give you 5 ints/fumbles more than Cam as well.

And some miscellaneous stats for your enjoyment.

For those curious and want to dive into more, The Deep Ball Project also had Cam Newton as one of the more accurate passers in the league.

With the lowest completion percentage in the league, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, Cam Newton experienced a large statistical regression from his MVP season a year prior. But was his 2016 really that bad, or was it a victim of box score scouting?

Well, let me put it this way; Not only was Newton great on downfield passing, I thought it was better than his 2015 season in that area. The Panthers offensive line allows heinous amounts of pressure like it’s a job, and combined with the large amount of drops, miscues and lack of separation and it’s a miracle Cam posted a 60.5 accuracy percentage.

There was definitely a dropoff in the last couple of games, but Newton was constantly making outstanding throws under pressure. Many of these completions I question if another QB could do them in the same style, and I’m not sure that’ll ever happen. With otherworldly arm strength and ball control, Newton was able to fit tight passes to receivers that should not have been open.

All in all, I found Cam’s deep ball to be high quality in 2016, far better than public perception gives him credit for and far more frequent in accuracy.

FINAL GRADE: A-

You mention several times about being deadly accurate and erratic. Also something about being deadly accurate when need be. When he's inaccurate is it because accuracy wasnt needed.  I dont really follow that line of logic.

Erratic? If I say erratic, that's talking about the o-line.

When Cam's inaccurate, that usually involves someone not doing their jobs, whether WR or o-line.

I have no idea where you got that from.

If anything, most of that was sarcasm about how the usual notion of the national media is to bash on Cam, so I used cliches' in a sarcastic  tone in here.

Ah...every bad throw is someone else's fault.  Gotcha. Every good throw is proof that he's deadly accurate which is only needed...when it occurs.

I will be labeled as a Newton hater but I just prefer logic.

This shows just how important McCaffrey and Samuel will be for the Panthers this year.  Look at the pressure Cam was under in those gifs.  True, the OL was bad and was decimated by injury, however, there is also another reason Cam was constantly under siege....there was no reason for the DL to hold back.

In most of those cases, if we had a McCaffrey or Samuel coming out of the backfield or underneath, the defense wouldn't be able to pin their ears back and send the house.  If they did, they would get burned...badly.

So because of the threat they present by simply being on the field, our top two picks will significantly help our OL and provide Cam with a little breathing room (which no opponent wants to see).  Defenders will no longer be able to pin their ears back, they'll now have to hesitate before rushing in order to try and diagnose what we are doing.

Our offense has now joined the 21st century, and the rest of the league should beware the Hell that's about to rain down on them!!!

The fact that you have to go out of your way to point people in the direction of labeling you a "Newton hater" tells me you don't really want to process this abundance of helpful information, and would rather just continue on with the usual contrarian shtick you are known for. This poo was stale 5 years ago.

Wow, lets see. WWI was the war to end all wars, that didn't happen any more than this is going to stop the Cam debates.

If you're making gifs about how accurate a passer Cam is, rushing and scrambling plays don't prove anything. Nether does a long list of rushing accomplishments. Not that both those things aren't impressive, it's just his rushing ability is unrelated to his passing ability and it was a really long post already.

So much of what is shown here is simply what any competent QB should do. Aside from some amazing deep passes, many of the gifs here show simple routine plays. Yes, other QBs stand in against the blitz, make the throw and take the hit. Yes, other QBs thread the needle or throw it over outstretched hands. Yes, other QBs stand in a collapsing pocket and make good throws.

There's some serious cherry picking here. There are about 20 gifs of throw here, give me all-22 and i'll find 80-100 throws where he wasn't accurate. At all. Many before his shoulder injury. Cam's a good QB, accuracy just isn't his strongest attribute.

Denver game, first gif, Cam nearly overthrows Olson on an outlet pass, He has to lunge to catch the ball, not the best example of accuracy  to lead with.

Cam made a very nice play there, but throwing an outlet pass that causes the TE to almost lose his footing is not the way to convince me he's accurate.

And, no Cam did not have a "really good game." He was 18/33 for 194 yards, 1 TD and 1 pick, 69.5 QB rating. That is not a really good game. There were certainly extenuating circumstances, but that's not a really good game.

Whole article is filled with things  like that. "Cam looks better when he has time" Well, no poo.

or

"Sure, Cam Newton may be inconsistent at times, but when he's accurate, he's deadly." You cannot be Inconsistently accurate that's an oxymoron.  That's the writer of the article admitting that  Cam really isn't as accurate as the writer would like to claim.

Ah...every bad throw is someone else's fault.  Gotcha. Every good throw is proof that he's deadly accurate which is only needed...when it occurs.

I will be labeled as a Newton hater but I just prefer logic.

Well, if you are for logical consistency, your view would reason out as if Cam doesn't thread every needle and complete every pass with DEs hanging off his shoulders and DTs going for his knees, then that makes him "inaccurate".
