Gettleman isn't going anywhere anytime soon. So if Smitty is that petty, then he can go fug himself. He always claims to be the bigger man but he's really not. He allows emotion to get in the way all the time. So be it, Smitty. I'll see you retire as a Panther when you're 50.

Dave does have a history IMO of handling some personnel issues poorly.  I don't think it is would be petty to simply not want to deal with someone anymore after a bad parting.  89 ain't talking trash right now.  He is just politely saying he isn't thinking about such things.  We know why.  Seems like 89 is adulting at the moment.

If Smith is how "petty," exactly? Read what he said again.

"It's really not on my radar today. If it comes about, I'll think about it."

That's all he said. Stop trying to read so much into it.

How so? I don't see Smitty acting like a grown up. If he loves Richardson, the team and the city like he claims, then he shouldn't be holding out until Gettleman leaves. Business is business. Smitty doesn't like Gettleman and the way things went down but there was never going to be a peaceful resolution to a political/locker room move. Smitty is the type of guy who goes out on his terms.

Somebody has to be the bad guy here. Unfortunately, it's the boss. You guys can sit there and scheme up a better play to make a hothead like Smitty stand down and move on but that was never going to happen. Richardson and Rivera had a hand in this as well. Let's not forget that either.

Again, it sounds to me like nothing more than he hasn't given it much thought, but if someone asked him, he would give it some thought.

Where did Smith say he was holding out or anything close to that?

If we are going to take Gettleman's history into consideration, the same has to be done for Smitty. In doing so, it definitely doesn't come off as adulting, but rather Smitty being his usually salty self.

He announced his retirement almost 7 months ago. Is he going to unretire now to retire as a Panther? Personally I don't care either way. Great players are associated with the team where they played the longest and best. Smith will be remembered as a Panther regardless of the team he retires with.

89 got fired from his job.  All accounts are it wasn't handled as professionally as it should of been on Carolina's end given what he put in.

so...what do you want from him?

I mean, overall in the Panther fandom world people just want him to come running back and give the fans what they want. Do that and it means he is an adult.  To me, that doesn't sound like him being adult but more simply fans getting what fans want.

Maybe retiring a Panther simply isn't a big deal to him.  That can be true.  Heck, did Jake Delhomme ever officially retire a Panther? I don't know.

The entire situation when he left the Panthers could have, and should have been handled better by all parties involved. I don't think there should be much (if any) debate about that. All this other back, and forth is useless.

If he retires with Carolina one day, good. If not, the world keeps going.

Yes, I'm sure other players had to think about signing a one day contract to retire too.

This is a no brainer. The Panthers drafted him and gave him his shot. He spent 80% of his career here. He made most of his connections in Charlotte.

He's still angry at Gettleman. Don't be a tool. You and I both know he isn't coming to retire as a Panther until Gettleman leaves.

Sorry, I won't make those assumptions. I'm not reading anymore into it than what is said.

If that's enough reason for me to be the tool, I'm good with that.
