Fly Like A Byrd - Damiere Byrd Doing Work

Why? He gets a lot of hate around here but he's paid his dues and there isn't a receiver on this team that has Cam's trust more than Bersin. Tell me one receiver that has been with Cam longer? Sorry but that goes a long way.

One, he's never shown much of anything in the regular season or even preseason. Two, he's the same type of big bodied possession receiver as KB, Funch and Shep who are all locks. Byrd is the exact type of player we need to compliment those guys. Bersin is fine for a fringe practice squad player but he's nothing more than that. That's not hate it's just the reality. I like the guy and the effort he's put in and it's quite a feat that he's made it as far as he has. But he has no upside and just doesn't have NFL talent. Byrd does have the upside. What possible proof do you have that Cam trusts him at all? That's a completely absurd notion. The amount of time he's been here is irrelevant.

I think Bersin's fine too, but I don't know if he's a piece we need for this offense. I think Shepard, CMC, and Samuel (when healthy) make up for Cam's lack of reliable options last year. We need more deep threats imo.

I like "arguing" with you Saca so I will leave you with this. You mention Cam's lack of reliable options and the need for deep threats. They just gave Cam more short options, let's hope he can adapt to that cause that is what the NFL is now. The last thing Cam needs is deep options. He already knows how to do that. Enjoy the rest of the game. *cheers* Football is back.

We still need someone that can stretch the field if we don't have Ginn so our underneath options work well. Shepard, Samuel, and CMC give me confidence they can work the short/intermediate game, but we still need a burner to get safeties going deep.

It's early yet still, but this isn't Byrd's first rodeo. He's just getting more looks now that there seems to be more of a commitment to see what he's got. I've had to defend him before from people saying that he had done basically nothing during preseasons past, but comparatively production-wise he was right there with Brown, Bersin and others who should have been in the same boat as far as I'm concerned.

Not quite sure why people seem surprised that he could play Ginn's speed role, but I guess that's what happens when people overlook certain guys who are basically waiting for their turn.

Honestly, I have zero proof other than the eyeball test. When Bersin is in the game, Cam finds him and likes throws him the ball...Bersin mostly catches it. Maybe someone who has more time than me can find the stats and prove me wrong. I'm fine with that and maybe it is an absurd notion. I just think he plays an important role on this team.

He was getting so incredibly open last year and him making the team proved the coaches didn't penalize him for terrible throws.

He had a nice game vs Baltimore and had that sick one handed catch in stride along with a punt return but Tennessee was his best game despite only going 3 for 36 yards.

I tweeted this at Voth 8/25/16

First pic - the ball hits the db in the back IRC

He can fill the Ginn Role but I think he also can be shiftier rather than just a deep threat.

He's getting a ton of separation on a ton of routes. This particular play would've been a sure touchdown if Webb was money. This isn't just a one time thing.

The corner route next to Byrd was easier to hit, Webb just likes Byrd I think

Actually defender would've stayed on the corner route had Webb thrown it to that side. The Texan recognized who Derek Anderson was throwing to and that his teammate was beat, so he tried his best to run over and help when Anderson threw.

Unless Webb's eyes were locked onto Byrd

the whole throw, there was no way that corner could have made a play on the corner route, he had no safety help, but it's hindsight now.

Oh, and it's Webb,  not Anderson  haha

    • excellent points and insights.  I agree on Tepper.  I guess I worry that his questions and comments might influence the thinking of his employees, that his presence in the room might add pressure to an already stressful situation, but after watching it again, it does not appear to be like that.  Morgan was in charge.  Canales mentioned needing a center, but beyond that, he was there to serve as a consultant, more or less, if asked.  I suppose my point was this--everyone knew their roles, I did not see egos--I saw empowerment.  As for Morgan--I saw a leader that listened to others, made wise decisions, and never lost control.  I was VERY IMPRESSED with Dan Morgan.
    • Pretty good summation, although I would caution just a bit that there might be a little of over-enhanced expectations. I do agree with the assessment on BPA. It was exceedingly clear they had a specific shopping list. Early on when there was some discussion about the tackles available, Morgan was asked if he was willing to give up a 5th to get Freeling, if it came to that. I think the only way it wasn't a left tackle with that 1st pick is if none that were valued as a 1st were still available.
    • a) That they made it a point in the room to point at the paper and say, "hope the camera got that" suggests we really did target the players we wanted and got them. While there is a ton of editing happening to cut out conversations not related to the players we picked, there didn't seem to be a lot of panic about who/what was going on b) Tepper appreciates the analytics. Now that he has a few years to see how the front office team works together to do the analysis, it still looks like he's hands-off (he's learned his lesson??). He seemed less vocal than in previous years' Blueprints (at least, in the edit).  I wouldn't expect Canales to be overly vocal in the draft room - he's likely already made his opinions known behind the scenes about certain players. Draft day is Morgan and Tilis and Eager's day. Loved seeing their interactions/conversations  c) that's all Eager. There's a great piece somewhere about the analytics engine he built floating around somewhere (maybe it was just after the draft?), and how he's constantly tweaking it with info about the players and input from the coaching staff.  That the post-draft press - for the most part - all seem to be overly positive about the draft actions we had compared to other teams makes it seem like we've gotten the ship moving in the right direction. Whether it translates to on-field results, well, that's a different topic for hundreds of other threads
