Analysis: Is Christian McCaffrey The Real Deal?

In the NFL there are combine warriors, and then there are practice warriors.

Combine warriors are the kind of players whose athletic numbers are off the charts, yet show nothing on the football field. Practice warriors are the kind of players who make insane plays during practice, but shut down under the bright lights.

Carolina Panthers runningback Christian McCaffrey is neither of these two things.

Sure, McCaffrey’s combine numbers are off the charts good. After all, his 4.22-second 20-Shuttle is the 14th best performance at the combine since 2012, and his 6.57-second 3-Cone is tops during the same span. And yes, he’s putting on a show at training camp.

Even so, Christian McCaffrey appears to be neither a combine warrior nor a practice warrior. Instead, he’s the real deal.

How one preseason game can verify whether a rookie will translate in the NFL and much more here:

They way you guys are hyping him up he better be.  He does show promise though.  It all hinges on the genius or lack there of of one Mike Shula.  Let that sink in for a minute.

Yeah, Saca is the one doing the hype.  I just come in his threads to laugh at this point.

Eh, doesn't really affect the fact his running style's showing no signs of slowing down in the NFL, but Shula could limit McCaffrey's full potential.

We'll see.

can't really justify the hype till the season starts but I think he's the real deal and it helps him so much that he can succeed in multiple ways.

One thing to be aware of, go watch his highlights and pay attention to how often he knows where he needs to get to (goalline or first down) and he makes an extra push to make sure he converts. He's not always trying to bust a long one, if it happens along the way fine, but he knows not to sacrifice a first down.

To give context, Christian McCaffrey had 7 carries for 33 yards, or 4.7 yards per attempt. Leonard Fournette had 9 carries for 31 yards, or 3.4 yards per attempt.

Think on that for a moment.

not a big enough workload for either of them . I won't really judge anything until the regular season

Two different situations!

It is just way too early to be judging these rookies like this. They're both likely "the real deal."

I would think that McCaffrey is the real deal based on his college career alone. That says more to me about his prospects than limited snaps in a preseason game. Don't get wrong, it was an adequate start to his pro career, but I didn't need to see it to believe that he's the real deal.

McCaffrey hasn't been unleashed yet. Shula and Rivera still have him on a chain.

    • You exclusively highlighted Hunter's name on the injury report and then immediately cast blame. I've pointed out that this wasn't the hospital ball you claim it to be while also acknowledging that there could have been another option to target instead of Renfrow. By everything you've expressed here, you don't think seam routes should ever be thrown. I don't know how that helps the already struggling offense, but I do know that it would make it even worse than it already is. Scapegoating never has and never will solve anything. Tell you what: Try not blaming Bryce or casting shade his way for the entire week after Arizona and instead look at the other 21 starters and assess what they're doing (again, without shading Bryce). I'll join you and refrain from exploring what the rest of the team is doing and will focus solely on what Bryce needs to do better. Deal? This is a sincere peace offering to allow us to explore the other's perspective and perhaps be even more informed football fans.
    • TMac PI throw was a TD too.  Bryce just drastically under threw it.  Renfrow and TMac set themselves up to BOTH have great days.   the story of last of no one was open…..isn’t a defense the Bryce Young defenders can use so far this year
