Why Carolina will have the #1 defense in 2017

Can't see it. A few tweaks will have to be made. Next year, I believe so. Next year with the right additions it'll be a playoff team and contender. This year, I don't see anything outside of top 5 defense but top d is a big accomplishment. Kansas City, Seattle and a few others are strong. Very strong.

I can see it. Best front 7 in the NFL with some decent peices in the secondary. Not to Mention Wilks

KC just lost the heart and soul of their defense in Berry. I'd agree Seattle probably has the edge over us because the division they play in has A LOT worse offenses. We are handicapped a little because other teams in our division built around offense.

#1 defense needs better depth on the line and better package players for nickel and dime. You got Seymour from the Bills. Good inside man coverage guy. The pieces are there for the secondary depth and packages. Just needs to be coached up.

The black of depth on the front 7 is terrible. That's the biggest weakness. Today's NFL needs rotation. Watch the bills this weekend. A $100mm DT playing about 50% of the defensive snaps.

Seattle front four is right there with us and their secondary is best in the business.   I think it is a wash.  I do agree TB, Atl and N.O. are from more powerful offensively than SF, LAR, Arizona.

Outside our linebackers which are the best in the business, Seatlle defense might get worn down.  Their offense looked really anemic against GB and they could be on the field much more than us.   Plus we only have to worry about New England and Miami in the AFC East and New England might be in trouble if their defensive injuries are sustained very long.

While I appreciate you trying to discuss our team in actual football talk, I have to disagree.

Let's look at what you said part by part:

1. #1 defense needs better depth on the line -

DE depth - Peppers, Johnson, Addison, Horton, Hall which is a pretty good rotation

DL depth - Star and KK backed up by Love and Butler   how is that not deep?

LB Depth - Kuechly, Davis, Thompson, Mayo, Cash, Jacobs, Norris  Best starters in the league, and Mayo and Cash are pretty solid.

2. better package players for nickel and dime -

Captain Munnerlyn is widely recognized as one of the top nickel corners in the league, not to mention Shaq wh can step back to play the buffalo nickel position

3. Good inside man coverage guy. - see above

I am just saying, don't overlook the depth just because the starters are as good as they are.

#1 defense is not out of reach of this team, as long as our safeties stay healthy.

Seattle plays some weak offenses but also has aging DE's, an unproven #2 CB, and a far inferior LB corps.

I think Peter Schrager really does like the Panthers.

You should look up our d-line since you know so much about us

Btw our first round pick of 2016 on the dline is coming back from injury

Yes. Maybe not by statistical metrics if our offense can't sustain drives like in years past (the end of last game offered hope though) but in terms of which defense is the toughest to go against, yes.

I'd like to have a true elite every down DE but I still think we can be the best.

    • Yes. Fitt said he liked Young for two years. He hitched his wagon to him. Reich and Young were going 2-15, nothing I said we should get would have saved him. A new coach plus Tepper (and Morgan) would have wanted the draft assets we kept or got to be used by a better GM/Coach. SMH, you need to read my post and your own again. You said: “So we should have sold off all of our talent and what?” I was being sarcastic that they still were in the roster because the guys you are saying we shouldn’t have sold off got sold off anyway but instead of getting full value, we got scraps. We had an opportunity to sell at the highs and instead we let the stocks lose 50-75% and then sold them. Because we didn’t tank in 2022 when the Rams basically handed the idea to us, we either set the team back several years to where we won’t do anything and will be back at the drawing board or kept enough talent off the team that we may make the playoffs but we still won’t be a top team like an extra handful of 1st rounders could have gotten us.
    • Holy poo... we have allowed the fewest goals in the playoffs, total. Including the teams that lost in the first round... lmao
    • It was nothing. It was a nice run in an easy schedule that did nothing but lose us DJ Moore and a lot more. We were 2-15 in 2023. Based on your logic, that winning finish should have been a launching point. For as much as you want to say we shouldn’t have taken a risk, you still can’t admit that the plans we tankers laid out were proven correct. There’s no revisionist history. We said we should have traded Burns to the Rams. We said we should have sold off anything not bolted down like Brown and Horn and even Icky because they were in the 5 year plan. There is no disconnect, we tried to keep winning and draft a rookie QB and we lost about 4 1st round picks of value that could have been given to the guys you think might be the right crew.
