Just a reminder about how the Panthers finish

Carolina is actually sitting pretty based on the history of the Ron/Cam era.  5-3 is technically the 2nd best start to a season.

Yes we haven't overly impressed on our way to 5-3 from an offensive perspective.  I have often said this season from an offensive standpoint is near identical to 2014 in terms of issues on offense. The good news? Carolina always does one thing....and one thing well.  Plays good late.  Whatever you want to say about Shula, Ron, Cam or whoever......they have consistently been able to adjust and make things work by the end of a season.

December record overall in the Ron/Cam era? 20-6.

December record in 2014 when our O experienced the same struggles in terms of running issues and lack of deep threat? 4-0

Yep, pretty much what I'm hanging my hopes on.

We've done what we needed to do so far to salvage a pretty good record put of some pretty poor overall offensive play. Ultimately, being the best team in the NFL at the mid-way point of the season means nothing. You ultimately want to be the team that enters the playoffs peaking.

I definitely hope we don't let the Saints sweep us. fug that noise.

Currently they look like a much better team and we have to play them at their place after them beating the snot out of us at home.. its logical to me. Only way we win that is in a shootout and I dont trust the lame offense.

Just look at the two games vs. the Falcons in 2015. Every game is different. I'm not about to concede anything.

We have the talent to finish 11-5 and go to the playoffs. 1 loss to the vikings and 1 more to the Saints.

Vikings isn't a bad matchup.  Just can't turn it over.   If Cam is having on "on" day we should win that IMO.

Looking at the schedule, I am pretty optimistic.

  • Falcons at home--should be a good revenge game from 2016.  Also, their defense folds late and our offense is good at ball control.  If our D shows, should be a win.
  • Dolphins at home--This team scares no one.  I expect a very low scoring affair, with the Panthers taking care of business.
  • At the Jets--Jets are going to be in full-on tank mode by mid-November.
  • At the Saints--Could be a revenge game, but this year they look pretty damned good.  I can see another loss here.
  • Vikings at home--I would have put this down as a loss early in the year, but I'm buying into the December game hype here and calling this a win.
  • Packers at home--No Rodgers will make this an automatic win.  If Rodgers is back, it can go either way.
  • Bucs at home--Homecoming game for the Panthers.
  • At the Falcons--They will be playing for a playoff spot and we will likely have no chance at the division but a sure wild card.  I can see another loss here.

Would you take an 11-5 season and consider it a success?

    • Would Morgan or Beason have been HOFers' if injuries hadn't derailed their careers?  I was not a close watcher of the game when Morgan was in his prime but I thought Beason had a few seasons at close to Lukes' level of play.
    • Franchise QBs feast when things are rolling and the tide that raises boats when things are going sideways.  Bryce isn't that. He's a complimentary player, that's it.  When the defense and STs are on point, he plays loose and it shows.  When we are in a dog fight and things haven't gone our way, he struggles.  It's that simple. He's not a horrible QB, but he's not top tier either.  So the question begs, is this worthy of a second contract?  The answer should be no.  It definitely is my answer. Bryce will never be a QB that can produce wins largely on his arm.  That's a FRANCHISE QB, any other QB is simply a placeholder at the starter's position until that guy can be found.   At some point the excuses of lack of weapons will be a straw man.  Heck, it's nearly there now.  I mean if he doesn't look even better than last year will we blame it on the TE position?  'Well if Bryce only had a player like Kelce, Kittle or Gronk on this team...'  Are we really going to do that?
    • When I arrived at college, I was 18, not too much younger than some of these draft picks.  It was not a huge school, but there were guys on the team who were 21, 22, 23....playing ahead of me.  I was seventh on the depth chart.  Those guys have been through a few seasons, were stronger, more knowledgeable.  I was a better raw player than some of them, but those other factors matter.  As I grew stronger, more familiar with the playbook, and learned what it was like to play in college, I gradually improved and with that, I rose up the depth chart.  It took most of my freshman year for the light to come on.  Had the coach thrown me into the starting lineup day 1, I would have probably failed.    And that was college.  So I agree with you based on my experience on a much lower level.  Frankly, I think that is why so many kids drafted to fill huge gaps bust.  The teams are desperate.  Anyone who looks to fill vacancies in the starting lineup through the draft is desperate.  You draft depth to develop.  For this reason, I say, "Let Walker start for a while."  Maybe Brazzell can be our WR 4.  Throw Hunter into a rotation and ask him to do one or two things.  Freeling needs some strength and he needs to work on run blocking.
