We were over the 2018 salary cap prior to the trade

The theory of this being a factor only works if the trade was planned and initiated by us.

It wasn't.

If the Bills hadn't called us, Benjamin would still be here.

Agree. That's was my thinking.

I am beginning to think Marty is full of shitz.

Beane said, he and Marty had talked about it on Monday.

You think Marty is posturing to make it look like a spur of the moment thing for not talking to Cam?

Not sure, but what reason would Beane have to make it up.

We have 4.5 mil from this year to roll over and 7.5 mil for next year.

Matt Kalil, Ryan Kalil, Adams, Stewart and others would save a ton of money each if they were to be cut. Expect a few of them to be gone.

I doubt they'll cut M.Kalil this year because of the cap hit. I agree with all of the others. I'm surprised you didn't mention Charles Johnson. It's time to move on from him as well.

Hurney did not cause this. What extensions are you speaking of? Olsen got an incentived deal, which he obviously won't hit this year, Davis never got one and the Turner blueprint was done before Hurney got here.

TD did get a deal bud.

This board is hilarious.

You guys scream when JR overpays veteran favorites...

And then you scream louder when he unloads your overpaid veteran favorites...

At least try to make sense. KB is the 73rd highest paid WR in the NFL for this season. 21st for next season.

According to spotrac even after dumping Benjamins 8.5 million salary next year we still only have 7.4 in space for next year. This ranks us 24th overall in cap space and 29th prior to the trade.

To me this was the biggest driving factor in dumping Benjamin now. It was literally our last chance before his contract became fully guaranteed on the first day of the league year when the trade window opens back up.  At this point his value likely would have been even less than what we got from  Buffalo.

Due to our cap situation he would have been a prime candidate to be cut to get us under the cap. In this case we would not be awarded a comp pick since we cut him vs him leaving via free agency. This also sort of answers the why didn't we try and trade for another WR question as unless we found another on a rookie contract it wouldn't make much sense financially.

Am I crazy for thinking this was likely the number 1 driving factor for us trading him, more than the in spite of Hurneys comments being about needing more speed on the field?

Throw in the fact that Hurney is locked in as the GM through the F.A and the draft next year it all makes sense. If he was truly going to be gone at the end of the season he likely would have let the next guy figure it out in the offseason and leave things as is.

I think much of this is probably true.  If KB is only expected to be productive for another year or two, now is a good time to act.  You run the risk of getting nothing for him waiting until next year.  By trading him now, you clear $8.5m in 2018 salary  plus another $.5m in 2017 salary that can be rolled over and you pick up a 3rd (salary around .8m).

With this move, we have $7.5 mil in cap room in 2018 plus about $4.5 that can be rolled over.  Moving on from Stew, CJ, Ryan Kalil, and Colin Jones nets around $16m. We may end up with $25-28m next year assuming some of these fairly obvious moves are made.

Finally, it doesn't appear the Olsen renegotiation will hurt us, but extending TD certainly had an impact. I believe we added about 3m to this year's cap which could have been rolled over without a renegotiation.  It looks like he's due to make 10m next year or we can cut him and eat $4.25m in dead money.  I believe Gman wanted to see how this year turned out before offering a new contract next year.  By not waiting, we added an extra $6m to our cap.

Do you really think the FO will have the guts make the cuts you're advocating? With the possible exception of Colin Jones, all of the guys you cited are "Hurney's guys" and have been rewarded by him in the past with large extensions during his previous GM stint.

I was surprised to see that Thomas Davis has a $10 million dollar cap hit for next year. I would love to see him finish his career here. If we could part ways with, or significantly reduce the salary of, the guys you cited above we should be able to absorb that for 1 more season. But man, 10 mil for a 35 year old LB is pretty steep.

    • They will be if they extend Young but I don't think we're there just yet. Morgan and Canales are tied and I don't believe Tepper is going to go look for a new front office for Bryce as things stand.
    • I was playing around with the ESPN playoff predictor and it shows if 49ers and Rams finish with same record, the Rams hold the tiebreaker.
    • This is my thinking as well. Seattle played as good as they could on defense and Panthers still had a chance until those back to back turnovers.  I don't think the Rams played particularly well in their game against us, alot things went our way in order to win.  Someone pointed out the Rams were bad on the east coast road games and Seattle has been the better road team but they just fought a hard contested game against the Panthers, and now they travel to San Fran this week for their biggest game of the season to determine the division and if they are the overall #1 seed in the NFC or will be traveling for the Wildcard weekend.  If they lose they then travel back cross the country to play a team they've just beaten two weeks ago, not saying they won't be favored against the Panthers but the energy of hosting our first playoff game in 10 years along with the get back effect of having just lost to this team could be huge.
