Cam is better without a #1 target

I think Cam is clearly better when he doesn't have a #1 target that he tries to feed the ball too.  Clearly, he's more focused and makes better decisions when he is asked to spread the ball around.  Last night's game reminded me of 2015 in how he hit so many different targets.  Even though Funchess had a great game, it was a byproduct of this process.  I don't think Cam was forcing the ball to anyone like he used to do with with Smitty,  KB, or even Olsen.

The truth is, no one's ever seen him with a true #1 WR. Smitty was old when he got here, KB was never a true number 1 whether it be problems with his motivation, catching consistency, YAC, or getting enough seperation from defenders.  Funchess has been good past couple games , but is he really a dominant force ?

I think Funchess is good enough to be the primary target. Cam really REALLY needs an established veteran speed WR with hands like Desean Jackson . If Cam had Desean Jackson at WR2 and Tyron Smith at LT and we move Moton to RT, we'd be world beaters.

And now another dynamic of the team is gone with Samuel set to miss multiple games. We don't have reliable speed on the outside. Byrd and Clay have speed but do they have the catching ability? Its yet to be seen in regular season games. Or if Cam even trusts them enough to throw them a reasonable number of targets.

Its sucks because Samuel was making some very tough catches and besides the endzone drop had been very reliable throughout the game and was improving by game by game basis over the past few weeks. Even if he does have the latent ability to be what we're looking for, he never stays healthy for long enough for it to really matter.

I never liked the idea of adding tall receivers to make up for Cam's tendency to throw high. All your receivers can't be TE tall. And nothing wrong with taller WR's as long as you don't overload or sacrifice too much speed. He doesn't seem to throw as many jump balls to Funchess, and he's got some good speed once he gets going.

You can call our receivers mediocre/average, but when you account for versatility, and add in the TE's and RB's (especially CMC), I think we've got a good crew that can get the job done as long as Cam gets the ball to 'em in catchable territory.

Not true, Cam is just better without KB. I really wish we would have given him D. Jax or Jefferys. We would be a much better team.

Alshon and KB are like the same player, KB prob better at this point

Like most would say Cam has never really had a No.1 WR. Steve Smith wasn't exactly in his prime when Cam got here but it's no coincidence he put but big numbers through the air with Smith. Big and fast WRs like Randy Moss, Terrell Ownes and Calvin Johnson don't really grow on trees but a WR who can just hold on to the ball will do wonders. Samuel looked decent but that TD drop probably would have not only put up 6 points but maybe he won't get his ankle rolled on it he adjust for the ball better.

Not to mention Shepard...I still think WR is a need.

Cam had a ton of weapons his first year.

Lol no he can actually stretch the field and beat defenders unlike KB. I really think a 3rd was a good pick up for us.

Alshon is last in the league in separation yards at 1.7. KB is third to last with 2.0. Alshon has never ever been able to stretch the field. He’s a big target who could make circus catches routinely but he hasn’t been good for several years now.

    • Damn Logan Jones had a good day too. Was high on him coming in as he anchored that top Iowa line and is a fire plug inside. He's gonna be 25 to start the season so maybe he slips into the 4th but I doubt it, even if C isn't a premium position. His play on the field was top notch and the combine boosted it again. Arm length is about the only knock. But guy is plug and play at C.   This is a loaded class at C. Need to grab one.
    • Bryce will be permanently replaced by a draft pick. There's not another Sam Darnold out there to save us. Tepper is going to see this throw because he dumped Mayfield and Darnold too soon. He's going to give it 1 more year before he will sign off on dumping another 1st round pick qb. Thats the cold hard truth of it. It doesn't mean we can't get younger and much better at the backup position.
    • Maybe I should have used a different word and saved that for me. I want someone that has something impressive about them.  Someone that has potential to supplant a guy who is producing 25th best type of numbers. 22nd, 27th all that bottom third neighborhood.  I don’t know where that will come from it just can’t be from even a 4th round pick this year IMO. Unless FA is crazy productive.    I’ll give Bryce a better than bottom rating for his playoff game. Well above low twenties. But at least half of his games were bottom third level. Probably 2/3 to 3/4 of them were.
