Evidence our defense has been overrated

Well said.  It's true.  Our defense is a mirage.  And in all honesty, Luke is still the best MLB in the game, but he hasn't had a great year and a lot of it has to do with the players around him not doing their jobs.

Luke has taken some uncharacteristically bad angles, missed gaps, and been pushed off his spot. and it is not indicative of his talent level. he's the QB of the defense and just like Cam presses and makes mistakes when the game starts to get away from us, so does Luke.

  • The Carolina offense is 2nd in the league in offensive time of possession despite being only 18th in YPG and 16th in PPG.

A big example of this was having just under a minute left before the half with 2 time outs and Shula wants to go Rush Limbaugh and be super conservative. Great teams would have gone and tried to drive down that field.

No one wants to say it, but Wilks as DC has been terrible for our defense.

McDermott was better at situational defensive calls and dialing up blitz’ in smart situations. Wilks calls up simple blitz’ offenses pick up and exploit for big gains, while putting too much stress on our secondary and linebackers in coverage.

In fact, it’s arguable Shula’s a better coordinator than Wilks, and Shula’s still bad at situational playcalling.

At least Shula doesn’t play simplified concepts and actually tries to be creative. Wilks has made this a predictable and simple defense while making a young secondary’s job the hardest in the NFL.

Where was the no huddle? The tempo?

The worst part is, is that I guarantee you will see it more in the weeks to come, and it will be the 7th consecutive year that Ron Rivera has had to learn in season after an important loss that the team benefits from incorporating it.

It's so frustrating to watch...  there were several plays they got instant pressure just from waiting for the playclock to wind down to 1 and jumped the snap.

The problem our defense has is generating turnovers.  We haven't gotten them in bunches and boy does our offense need them.  When we forced the josh hill fumble, our offense got a short field and got in gear just before halftime.  Our offense is too shitty to not be getting good field position.  Worse yet, we've gotten 5 interceptions this year (already kinda pathetic), but zero, ZERO have come from a Cornerback.  3 from Luke and 2 from a 1000 year old Mike Adams.  Where the hell is Bradberry...or Worley...or Seymour...or Munnerlyn.  We don't have a single aggressive corner, and it hurts us as a team.

Man, Saca this is something Ive been thinking more and more as the year goes on.

I dont understand the fascination with playing more man coverage when we clearly dont have the personnel to run such a scheme.

    • Damn back to 10th. I only caught the last 5 minutes but some of those 3's were horrible lol. In that close of game you can't be launching those many hail mary's when you could be chipping away from the foul line. I guess no one wanted to get in the paint and didn't trust the refs to give them the calls maybe? Gonna watch the highlights to get a better idea of the flow of the game
    • I agree.  The Big 12 is a good conference, and he is the swinging dick in that conference.  If Bill Self retires, that sets Kansas back a bit, and Arizona moves even further ahead as the best team in that conference.  Arizona can crush west coast recruiting with USC / UCLA no longer being relevant for LA kids, and Gonzaga not being able to compete moneywise.   If Lloyd comes here, he will be second fiddle to Duke every single year in NIL and recruits.  Not to mention the entire SEC and Big East for kids who want to stay in those regions to play. This is why I keep saying go get Mark Few.  Has proven he can do more with less from an X / O perspective but can also recruit All American players and compete at a high level. He's a god at Gonzaga, but for $9M he'd make the move as that's 4x what he's making at Gonzaga, and makes him the highest paid coach in the country.
    • Certainly not going to miss his constant whiffs on sacks and tackles.
