When Shula Does The Shula-ing and Peak Shulas.

Shula comes up with a brilliant opening drive script to help tie the game 7-7, and falls completely flat the rest of the game.

This time, it was just his situational play-calling that was awful. It was everything.

First up, we got the brilliance of 3 vs 7. A genius call that literally begs the Saints to sack Newton to end this misery of a call.

I mean if you thought that shovel pass on 2nd and long was bad, or pretty much every "run on second and long" we've done all year was outright terrible, this right here is peak shula-ing. It's like he literally can't comprehend what's happening on the field.

And, to further prove why Mike Shula is so inept at OC-ing, his way of utilizing Dickson is very bad. Maybe Shula got the message Olsen wasn't playing at the last second, but that still doesn't excuse trying to make Ed Dickson Olsen. Not even close.

Seriously. They tried putting Ed Dickson as X receiver. May as well put Matt Kalil as the Z receiver and see how that goes at this rate.

Shula has no answer on what to do when a defense dares to use man coverage. Very bad round of playcalls after Shula was forced to adapt to the game. Really pathetic really.

Cam Newton was literally the only guy churning the offense all day with no help from everyone.

LOL so funny.

So no don't adjust to what you have, keep pretending like you DO have OT/WR talent and call those plays. Yet it's not his fault. Can't do crossing routes, slants, smoke screens, nope.

again..

Not every team has obvioys talent..that is why playcalling and play designs are used to help those that are limtted.Funchess bryd dickson and bersin all have been here more than 2yrs ..if you can not create a play design or call a play that fits them why have them on the team... This excuse of not having the talent is bullsht...You pick these players and say they can be used in your offense and then turn right around and say you have no talent..No your not a good OC just a one plan guy and once that plan fells you just keep using it..Keep sending Funchess on go routes when it should be byrd or clay..shepard has had enough opportunities being someone else up from the PS tired of looking at 19 doing nothing .This team is laughable ..defense cant stop nobody when they do soecial teams will goof it up or the offense will sail south.

If John Morton can make the Jets mediocre with the crap stew they have Shula could at least do half that with a generational QB at the helm.

That's the problem with posters on here you'd think they'd need Julio Jones, Antonio Brown, and Odell Beckham to do anything offensively. Guess what that kind of team doesn't exist and we got to the dang SB with crap WR too. The system is bad and needs to be thrown out.

Better play calling would turn at least 2 of our losses to wins and would give us a better chance at a deep playoff run. Scheme, design, and play calling is extremely important and dictates the direction your offense is going in.

Can you read ?not absolving him of fault but expecting a top offense with the group of recievers and matt kalils drive killing ass is absurd. Scheming guys open like  shepard just so they can drop the ball, or running cmc outside so matt kalil can block air aint going to produce much, more worried about the damn sorry ass special teams thats been a problem for years

Pick these players ??? Tf cmc, funchess and olsen are the only guys who any other team would pick, I could care less if shula stays or go but we’ll run into the same issues with a new oc, new oc isnt going to magically make matt kalil a better player or wr not named funchess catch the ball. Like I said absurd to expect cam to be a pocket passer with ass for a wr core, anyone not named olsen or funchess wouldnt even get picked up by another team but we’re expecting the offense to put up NE and Pits numbers ?????

    • Pretty good summation, although I would caution just a bit that there might be a little of over-enhanced expectations. I do agree with the assessment on BPA. It was exceedingly clear they had a specific shopping list. Early on when there was some discussion about the tackles available, Morgan was asked if he was willing to give up a 5th to get Freeling, if it came to that. I think the only way it wasn't a left tackle with that 1st pick is if none that were valued as a 1st were still available.
    • a) That they made it a point in the room to point at the paper and say, "hope the camera got that" suggests we really did target the players we wanted and got them. While there is a ton of editing happening to cut out conversations not related to the players we picked, there didn't seem to be a lot of panic about who/what was going on b) Tepper appreciates the analytics. Now that he has a few years to see how the front office team works together to do the analysis, it still looks like he's hands-off (he's learned his lesson??). He seemed less vocal than in previous years' Blueprints (at least, in the edit).  I wouldn't expect Canales to be overly vocal in the draft room - he's likely already made his opinions known behind the scenes about certain players. Draft day is Morgan and Tilis and Eager's day. Loved seeing their interactions/conversations  c) that's all Eager. There's a great piece somewhere about the analytics engine he built floating around somewhere (maybe it was just after the draft?), and how he's constantly tweaking it with info about the players and input from the coaching staff.  That the post-draft press - for the most part - all seem to be overly positive about the draft actions we had compared to other teams makes it seem like we've gotten the ship moving in the right direction. Whether it translates to on-field results, well, that's a different topic for hundreds of other threads
    • I was wondering if they have made the decision to move him inside, to the other side (timing bad), or move on. They can wait to see his development before coming to that conclusion.  But to your point, with Walker on a one-year deal and the knowledge that Ickey should be back during the season, I was surprised that we seemed so focused on Freeling (in particular) and the LOT position in this draft. I don't think it was going to be "which one," but I think they were contemplating a trade up to get ahead of Detroit to take Freeling when they saw him there mid draft.  I dunno. They seemed to be targeting him--even to the point where they asked, "If Freeling is gone, what are you going to do?" So I think they are (at the very least) proceeding as if he is done, and that sure makes it seem as if they might be done with him.  Depth at OT:  We signed a starting LT (Walker) and we signed a veteran swing OT in Stone Forsythe.  Morgan says his knee is not a huge concern and talks of playing a few more years.  Ickey could return mid season, some say.  To see this clearly, you have to consider what Morgan said in the Blueprint video about how signing free agents helped in the draft.  They claimed that the OT draft class was strong.  It is my view that ILB and Edge were bigger needs, so by signing Phillips and Lloyd, we eliminated those needs so we could focus on LT in this draft.  They wanted Freeling, it seems, and that is not necessarily based on anything concerning Ickey's injury or recovery.  They see him as an upgrade.  They mentioned his athleticism and feel that he can protect Bryce better than Ickey did.   Does that mean Ickey is done?  Good question.  WHat do they know?
