The leftover Gettleman jockstrap sniffers can't give Hurney even a smidge of credit for this even though this goes against just about everything we've seen from Ron the last few years. If you think Rivera stormed into Hurney's office and demanded Shula be fired right then and there you are living in a fantasy world.

I think Ron had a hand in it for sure, but it was likely for his own self preservation. If we had managed to beat the Saints, Shula would likely still be here another year at least. The playoff loss warmed Ron's seat.

I wouldn't give Gettleman credit for this if he were still here either, even though it was reported that he urged Rivera to do it last year.

GMs don't hire and fire assistants.  And as has been confirmed by reports, this was Rivera's call.

Again. Self preservation.

Hurney is going to let the defense rot.  Huddlers probably get their wish as he chases free agent WRs at the expensive of the defensive line and secondary, but the elite defense that Gettleman built is going to disappear.

Letting the defense "rot" would be better than the defense we have now. Improving the Offense will keep the defense from being on the field all the time so that when they are on the field they play better and get more pressure. We've pretty much locked up all the notable players we have on defense, so how much can it rot? The rest of the players IE the secondary have just been fill in players for years even with gettleman.

Hurney built a top defense during his tme.

I think there is a lot of truth to this. Yesterday when Hurney was doing an interview he stated something to the effect of "If Ron and I don't agree with something when we start in a room together, we will agree before leaving the room." Next day Shula is fired.

Speculation on my part and only my opinion but reading between the lines, I think this is spot on. That Saints loss made the difference.

Is it really possible for Ron's seat to be warm right after he just got a two year extension?

I love it! Rivera totally made the change to save his skin with new ownership looming, seeing shula and his incompetence and realizing that him and Ron are a package deal. It's sad that it took this long, but whatever.

The conservative play for the first 3 quarters before Cam stopped listening to them and took charge himself was beyond frustrating. A well coached Panthers team beats the Saints rather they were on the road or not.

No way Rivera did this willingly.

Sure he did or he was out with him. Stuck his neck out for Shula and Shula sucked. So if he wouldn't let Shula go he was going with Shula out the door. So RR valued his job over Shula.

No, I don't believe so. Overlooked that part but I do think Hurney and Ron had a sit down and this was a joint decision that Hurney may have had to convince Ron into and the Saints loss forced him to realize things needed to change.

Rivera just described the process of how he came to this conclusion in his presser.  Basically said he did it alone after looking at film.
