If Stew is still here next season then there isn't much to be excited about. Furthermore, Hurney has hinted at drafting a back so I think the writing is on the wall. Also, I doubt that we are going to pursue a 38 year old tight end.

I think we as fans can choose to be positive or negative about the changes until they happen on the field.  Some people prefer to be overly negative, that way anything about their baseline is a pleasant surprise.  Others prefer to be overly positive.  Threads like this (and the other 90 billion here about Turner) are full of the hopes and piss & vinegar views.

Looking at this down the middle:  We will continue to run with the read option.  We will probably try to limit Cam to 5-8 carries a game, but use him when he is needed.  Honestly, we need to get better at running that ball.  If that's scheme, talent, whatever.  Hopefully Turner can help out getting the run working better.  Turner looks to be an upgrade (for now) in the play calling and game planning departments over Shula.

A prior poster said this isn't rocket science.  This team was 11-5, a few less miserable showings from the offense and we'd be 13-3 and a contender.  So we will need to fix some things, but the scheme that Cam is in can work with some more tweeking and better play calling.

Let's see.  If it happens, then awesome.  If it doesn't, then Rivera and Co will all lose their jobs as a new GM, owner and coach show up.  I'd say the stakes for the current and near future Panthers players and coaches are pretty high?  Therefore, I'd expect things to move in a more positive trajectory sooner rather than later.

Rivera stated when he came to carolina he wanted a offense that was aggressive and a defensive that caused turnovers and stopped the run. His first hires were Chud on offense and McDermott on defense. CHUD produced exactly the offense Rivera wanted and it lead to Cam Newton putting up some of his best numbers. Then CHUD went to the Browns and Shula was hired. Now enter the era of Turner. The guy that gave the playbook to CHUD and here is what we can expect. 

 

1. Cam Newton- Don't expect to see the read option and Cam being used as a battering ram anymore except for scrambling. He will be shaped like Troy Aikman, Drew Brees, and Phillip Rivers. Cam has all the skills to dissect a defensive and team Turner will fill the gaps that's missing. I expect Cam to have one of his better years passing. 

 

2. Christian McCaffrey - We now have a OC that has coached the like of Emmitt Smith, Frank Gore,  LaDainian Tomlinson, Darron Sproles, and our own Tolbert. He knows how and where to use backs and how to fix whats going wrong. He has a weapon in McCaffrey he hasn't had since Tomlinson. Get excited!

3. Jonathan Stewart- much can be said the same about Stewart as McCaffrey. He has his battering Ram in Stewart to close out games after a lead has been ran up. Think what Smith did in Dallas. 

4. Greg Olsen - while we might go after a Free Agent in Gates Olsen has to be excited. This is the guy that made Gates and has used TEs to torment DCs since the 90s. You excited yet? 

5. Devin Funchess - Ask Michael Irvine if Turner knows how to use a big body. Like I said you get a coach and a OC. Not something you had in CHUD or Shula. Turner knows how to coach and for our young WRs it's going to be huge!

I think you can also believe we will play FA for Josh Gordon or Mike Wallace. We need size and speed and both guys bring that. I really think we will also try to get Gates as he will probably want to work with Turner again and will add more weapons. 

Barring Wilks leaving and knowing how he plays defense we can expect good things next year. Turner knows how to get a lead and keep one. His offenses sans Vikings were always top 5 scoring and Points. Our defense really just needs 30 points to win every game and I think Turner can get that every Sunday with ease. So stop complaining and get excited because that rat faced Shaun Payton is about to face a juggernaut next year. Dan Quinn and Matt Ryan will be crying after we drop 40 on them twice and Crabs McGee in Tampa will wish he could hold Cam's head towel. It's going to be fun lady and gentlemen. Real fun!!!!

Why Norv Turner's a brilliant hire for the Panthers -- and especially Cam Newton: If Cam Newton is really serious about becoming an icon at his position -- something he's said in the past -- we should see his game evolve in 2018 under new offensive coordinator Norv Turner. The Carolina Panthers snatched up the 65-year-old offensive wizard on Thursday to retool the attack and help No. 1 play like a top-five quarterback.

Now, I know it sounds crazy to suggest that a former league MVP isn't already regarded as an elite player, but it is hard to make that assertion with Newton, based on his maddening inconsistencies as a passer. Since entering the league in 2011, Newton ranks as the worst passer in the NFL, with a 58.5 percent completion rate (min. 1,500 attempts). In the league today, the 60 percent mark is kinda viewed as the Mendoza Line. And Newton's fresh off a season where he posted lackluster marks in TD-to-INT ratio (22:16) and passer rating (80.7).

But No. 1's issues as a passer are deeper than those surface-level numbers. Newton ranks as one of this season's worst throwers on third-down (i.e., the money down), with a 53 percent completion rate (third-worst in the NFL in 2017), a 59.8 passer rating (second-worst) and 12 interceptions (worst). With No. 1 also posting the largest average passer-rating swing (41.1) from game to game this season, the veteran's inconsistencies as a passer needed to be addressed to help the Panthers' offense operate at a championship level.

"Cam is so talented that he should be one of the elite players in the league, but he hasn't been consistent enough as a passer," a former Panthers' scout told me. "He needs to be pushed a little, and I don't know if the other guys (offensive coordinator Mike Shula and quarterback coach Ken Dorsey, both of whom were relieved of their duties on Wednesday) could challenge him enough to get him to take that next step."

That's why the decision to bring on Turner is a brilliant move for the Panthers. The veteran coach is viewed as one of the top QB developers in the game, as evidenced by his work with Troy Aikman,Philip Rivers and others throughout his career. As an Ernie Zampese disciple, Turner is a proponent of a downfield passing game that features a number of in-breaking routes (slants, skinny posts and digs). In addition, he is a big fan of a power-based running game and complementary passing attack that creates plenty of big-play opportunities for the quarterback.

Looking at Newton's skills, the Panthers' new system should work well for a strong-armed thrower adept at pushing the ball to the far corners of the field with outstanding zip and velocity. Say what you want about Cam's accuracy and ball placement, but there's no denying his ability to throw darts to every area of the field. There are few NFL passers who can match No. 1's raw ability, and Turner's scheme should showcase his skills as a passer -- if Newton completely buys into the preparation and dirty work needed to be a great quarterback.

That brings me back to Turner and why he could be the coach to get Newton to take his game up a notch as a passer. He is known for his attention to detail and he has the right personality to prod his naturally gifted signal-caller to focus on the finer points of the game. Think of it as the wise old man in the barbershop dropping nuggets on the youngsters hanging on his every word.

But here's the thing: The 28-year-old Newton has to want to evolve as a quarterback and become more of a thrower than a runner at this stage of his career. Remember, he is coming off a season where he led the Panthers in rushing for the third time in his career. That's not ideal, but those running skills can certainly add a dimension to an offense.

"He's never had an athlete like Cam at quarterback," said one long-time defensive coordinator who currently works for an AFC team. "It will be interesting to see how he utilizes those skills."

While I don't expect Turner to feature Newton as much as a runner, I do believe the QB's athleticism and elusiveness can help him erase some play-calling mistakes. With Turner inheriting an offense that features his preferred cast of weapons (big-bodied receiver, productive tight end and pass-catching running back), he will give Newton every opportunity to succeed as a QB1. Now it's up to No. 1 to remake his game and take advantage of the scheme.

I think they will this season.  It's time for one of these young guys to take over.  The draft may she'd some light on what the plan is and whether CAP is going to be part of the equation.  I'm almost certain Fozzy stays because he's one of the few the Ron just can't seem to let go off.  Hope I'm wrong on that one though.
