How did the Jaguars lose?

Aren't long routes used to open up shorter ones by taking defenders deeper? QBs generally decide who they throw it to. I have a hard time believing any OC would suggest a play and tell the QB to throw deep and not consider any one open underneath. But that may be too logical for this place.

No, it's reasonable.

That said, situational play calling has long been the biggest knock on Shula.

Remember Shula calling repeated long passes at the end of one of our games this year?

I forget which game but I remember we failed to get the first down, turned it over on downs and the game was over.

It was the Eagles game

Zero penalties against your offense and defense sure makes it easier to win. Only one penalty for 10 yards on special teams all game, give me a fuging break.

I am not one to blame the officials for losing but the Patriots only having that one ten yard penalty was certainly a big,big time, show stopper for Jacksonville. Sadly.this was not the first important one penalty, Patriot game. It has to make one wonder.

I agree to an extent, but again on those plays the logic is either the deep ball is one on one matchups, if not, go underneath. If you dont send anyone deep then the options are condensed and most likely covered. It's up to the qb to make the correct read and throw. You can certainly argue that CMC shouldnt have been the guy going deep, instead underneath on those and have a more veteran receiver be the ones going deep. But now thankfully we have moved on from Shula so I am curious to see who everyones new scapegoat is going to be.

It fits the Coryell core concepts for certain.  But then you have to add in that we were running "day one" routes late in the season (per Louis Riddick) when Shula's routes already had a rep for being predictable as it was.

Side Note: Speaking of Riddick, he posted a cryptic tweet that could conceivably point to a new job, maybe as MNF announcer.

Yea that was almost as sad as the receivers and their lack of experience that we were trotting out.
