Turner Interview Part 2: Talking about McCaffrey and General Philosophy

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Norv continues to say all the right things. So much of the things this team wasn't doing he highlighted that it's not going to be acceptable.

My favorite line was "if they do certain things very well then they'll get a opportunity. If not then someone else will"

This is a clear distinction from years past. Do it well or you won't be allowed to and I'll replace you. Accountability was something this team has been missing for a long time.

I know some are gonna look at this and just say "crap, more of the same".

I can tell you if you haven't watched the two videos of this interview, you should.

I can also tell you that if you have watched the video, and you still come away feeling like that, you're not paying attention.

I agree completely - I am really excited to see our NT offense.

The tweaks/changes that he is proposing seem like they would really take our offense to the next level in consitency and it seems that he is already familiar with what we have to work with.

I really liked the first interview where he talked of working with Cam on drop back, footwork, and speed/timing. His drop-backs have always looked lackadasical and then the obvious fade-away throws and timing on read option routes have been issues. It seems Norv is keenly aware of these things.

I also like the acknowledgement that CMC needs the ball with room to turn around and get going rather than getting the ball and getting swallowed up immediately.

I mean the sad thing about it is, this offense will be vastly better overall with just improved situational awareness in terms of playcalling and use of personnel.

Not wasting a first down blindly and predictably running it up the gut into a wall and then wasting 2nd down on long developing routes only to set up an inevitable third and long where the offense is at an immediate disadvantage.

We should instantly be a top 10 offense without such fugery.

Rivera talks about accountability, and I fully believe he wants accountability.

He just isn't very good at it.

Maybe this can be one of those complementary situations.

Finally, someone that will implement halftime adjustments and adjust to the blitzes being called lol reading that made me giddy lol

I love that he wants the players to play faster and that he will help them in doing that. I can't wait to see how he uses CMC, Samuels, etc. Also, think it's pretty obvious that we'll be looking for a new full time back this offseason. We'll probably cut Stew after the draft.

get plays in before 0:12 and I’ll be happy

Hopefully Norv cleans this up also...... Everyone always throws Shula under the bus for play calls getting in late because that is what is pounded in people's heads. Maybe he is slow with that but if this is still going on it has to be part of it but is never discussed.

Newton also talked about himself in the huddle.

"Half the time when I'm saying a play, I'm wrong, and those guys fix it. It's like my autocorrect. You know when you're on Word document, they're the red lining right there," Newton said. "Half the time I don't even know what's going on. I just wish I could take my helmet off and say listen to what he's saying. Either I'm tired from scrambling or said the play and got tongue-tied.

I know there are people who think we give Stewart another year, and with Hurney yeah it's possible, but I just cant see it.

And I also think with Stew that if he wants another job in the league then he will have to transform his body. As an older running back he's not able to carry that weight like he used to. It could be slowing him down some now.

our two minute/hurry up offense, which looks like a chinese fire drill.

It is hard to imagine the Panthers ever put much of an effort into developing/practicing their two minute offense.  I can't recall ever seeing a team that wastes more time attempting to score points in the last two minutes.

I'm just imagining what the reaction would be if somebody else said that about Newton.

It's hard to dispute when it comes from Cam himself. I don't know why he said it, if it was meant to be humorous, but it sure does make you wonder what they heck goes on in the huddle if they should be making a reality show about it. I think the whole thing has been a mess from start to go for awhile.

100% agree.  I know who the QB's are, but our 2 minute, and the Saints/Pats/Eagles 2 minute look like they aren't the same sport.

Now, maybe we have too many young players to properly install a 2/4 minute offense, but damn...it's awful.

I've obviously never been in a pro huddle, but I've spent time in huddles from age eight to age eighteen. Every coach I had said the same thing. Concentrate , focus, listen to the play and unless you're the quarterback, shut your mouth.

It's infinitely more complicated at the pro level so I imagine chatter is necessary.  Sounds like Oher wasn't a fan of horsing around though.
