Malcolm Butler's response to his benching

It's one thing to be benched in terms of starting the game for "team violations".  This fool Belichick kept a solid piece of his defense out of the entire game.  Butler didn't even play in nickel and dime packages.  If I'm a Patriots player, I would be furious.  We are talking about grown men here being treated like children.  If he's late to a meeting, fine him.  If he misses curfew, fine him.  If it becomes a perpetual thing, release him.  Don't treat a grown man like a child or a college kid.  If it were Tom Brady missing curfew, do you think Belichick keeps him out of that game?  This is the ish people get fired over in my opinion.  This is head rolling stuff!

Here's the way I look at it.  Butler was acting like a child, so he got treated like one.  It's no different than the tie incident with Cam.  You know the rules, you break them, you have to pay a debt.

Now it's slowly coming out that there is quite a bit more to the story, involving drugs, women, and curfew....I don't know what to believe yet, but there is smoke.

I do think it was foolish to not play Butler at all, but I'm A-OK with punishing him in some way.

If you're Belichick, why compromise your credibility by saying that discipline was not a factor in Butler's benching, if the curfew busting story is true? The 'game plan' excuse is just stupid, and people are just gonna keep digging until something that makes sense comes out.

Those defending this clown are morons. He clearly broke team rules that everyone else appears to have followed. If they lost because of it, it's his fault not the coach.

Not many are defending Butler.  Its just an incredibly baffling decision.  If its non football related, why not just suspend him, why have him play one snap?  And if it was football related, then BB just made a stupid mistake that might have cost them the game.

Quote

Belichick denied after the game that it was a disciplinary decision and said it was strictly football related, while defensive coordinator Matt Patricia repeated Belichickian nonanswer after nonanswer.

If he got in trouble, and it was announced that he was being disciplined, most would just be saying that he made his own bed.  BB is inviting questions and criticism by saying it was a football move.  Ie, performance related.

BB deserves to be questioned over this, even if he doesn't have to answer those questions.

As I stated earlier in this thread...not really believing it to be true.....

Maybe BB was trying to protect Butler from himself?  He stands to make a lot of money this offseason, possibly did something really stupid that would cost him coin, and BB may be trying to help him.

Admittedly, that's not really who I think BB is, but it's a possibility.

Doesn't really mesh with Butler's "they gave up on me" comments though, does it?

In the end, I'm not sure we're going to get anything close to a full story from either side. If we get anything at all, it'll probably come from Butler because you know Belichick isn't gonna say s--t.

I agree, that part doesn't mesh, but nothing really makes any sense with this one.

The truth will come out...it always does.

Not out of New England, it doesn't.

True.  But as mad and frustrated as he, and ex-Pats seemed to be...you would think it would slip out.

Maybe if Bill films McDaniels practices in Indy, we will get the real scoop.

We have no idea what the real story is, all speculation at this point.

im looking at Butler only 3.9 million last year. He’s worth bringing in.

i know we get elder back, Gunter and Seymour looked ok, but Butler is still an upgrade to bring in on the cheap

So in essence the coach punished the team for something Butler did. You don't put sb's on the line to prove a point. End of story.

The eagles converted 8-10 3rd downs while killing Rowe and a 3rd string reject from the Browns.  IF butlers in for one of those conversions it could've changed the game.

Most of the patriots players don't seem mad at Butler for whatever may have happened they seem more frustrated with Bills decision and timing. They know that's not the time to discipline someone.

One thing people aren't talking about is this is gonna cost Butler MILLIONS in FA. I still think the truth comes out eventually.

So, wait....

It's gonna cost him millions but the truth hasn't come out yet? What if the truth is there was no curfew issue, there was no sickness and BB just benched him for the reasons he stated? Does it still cost Butler?

Show me where "he broke team rules?"

BB has repeatedly stated it was for football reasons, and without anything else to go on, you've decided "he clearly broke team rules."

Belichick denied after the game that it was a disciplinary decision and said it was strictly football related, while defensive coordinator Matt Patricia repeated Belichickian nonanswer after nonanswer.

    • We won't know the answer to this for a long time. Reality is, Caleb has been the consensus #1 in that draft for years. Bryce was a similar situation, but mostly the same. He was not the clear and obvious #1 that Caleb was, but most teams had Bryce at QB1. The Panthers were always going to be terrible Bryce's rookie year.  I don't think DJ Moore's presence would have changed anything about that offense, as our guards, center, and left tackle were getting demolished on nearly every snap. It's clear Caleb's dad was trying to do everything possible to ensure Caleb didn't end up in Chicago with Eberflus. It's hard to imagine that he wouldn't have done the same, but probably more publicly with our situation, considering Carolina is an easier target for the media than Chicago. We can all speculate, but it's impossible to tell who is going to have the better career on May 16, 2025. If either QB doesn't pan out, we have an easy answer. If both flame out, the bears clearly won the trade, but it wouldn't have really mattered anyway. We all know how we win the trade. Candidly, even if one of the other picks we gave up ends up being a hall of fame player, we don't know if the panthers would have taken that player anyway. All you can do is make the best decision you can in the moment with the information you have. I really like Bryce Young, and I'm glad he's a Carolina Panther.  The only way to win in the modern NFL is to have an absolute dude at QB. I personally am happy that our franchise recognizes this, as I remember times when they did not.
