Rumor: McDaniels may turn down the Colts

I kind of disagree, especially considering the Jets did the same thing getting them in the building. They tried to take them away from NE, then to get around tampering accusations they made belichick the HC for 6 days where Parcells was just a consultant, then just said screw it then made him the HC anyway, all while bother were still under contract in NE.

I can understand Belichick wanting to establish his own story instead of following in the footsteps immediately behind a legend.

I can understand that too, but if that's your thinking why'd you agree to the damn job in the first place?

Not taking a job is okay.  Taking it then bailing on it is a dick move.

From my understanding he never actually took the job, they just named him HC without letting him know that he had an interview request with the Pats. Then when they announced him he said, nah, I'm good, but was still contractually employed by the Jets due to the contract he signed when he first joined the staff.

FYI: Patricia just became official...

Lions name Matt Patricia head coach

Quote

Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions officially have a new head man.

The team announced Monday that former New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia will be tasked with turning around a Lions team that hasn't won a playoff game since the 1991 season.

"This position comes with great responsibility, and I will commit every ounce of my energy to this football team, starting today," Patricia said in a statement. "My family is excited to become part of this wonderful city that displays so much passion for their teams.

"I can't express enough appreciation to the entire New England Patriots franchise, particularly Robert and Jonathan Kraft and their entire family. I will truly cherish these last 14 years as a member of this incredible organization."

Peyton Manning singlehandedly made them relevant for years. Pretty amazing.

I wouldn't go quite THAT far. Freeney/Mathis was an elite pass rusher tandem. Freeney will definitely be a HOFer and Mathis has a case. Marshall Faulk is already in the HOF and Edgerrin James probably should be. Marvin Harrison is already in the HOF and Reggie Wayne will likely join him. I'm sure I'm overlooking some other guys. Peyton was a HUGE part of their success, but they were far from a one man show.

To be fair though, Faulk is far more closely associated with the Rams (and rightly so since they did a much better job of using his skills).

Well obviously 53 guys on a roster, but as much as one player can do for a team, Peyton did it for them his entire career there. It's not NBA where a single player or two can win games by themselves, but as close as it can get in the NFL, Peyton Manning got that close.

Patricia's defense was the 29th ranked unit in the league this year. #25 last year. #24 in 2015. #20 in 2014. #7 in 2013. #8 in 2014. They were the #2 NFL defense the year before Patricia took over.

What am I missing with this guy? Looks to me like he inherited an elite defense and then proceeded to run it into the ground.

What other teams featured that many HOF caliber players? This narrative of Peyton completely carrying the Colts is just plain false.

Not a fan of either the Colts or McDaniels, but if I had a chance to be the HC of the Patriots, I wouldn't be heading to Indianapolis.  Difference between the two team owners is night and day.

I am not certain I would want to take over as coach of the Pats.  Awfully big shoes to fill, and Brady is going to be done within two years regardless of what he says.  If BB is leaving now, yeah, it might be a good idea to take over.  You inherit a team that is ready to go for one more.  If he is leaving in 2019, maybe not.

While the concern of filling big shoes is a valid one, any candidate should have the attitude that they'll meet that challenge, otherwise they're most likely the wrong man for the job.

I do believe having a supportive/stable/non-interfering NFL owner is important, if not essential.

Kraft appears to be all those things, while Irsay seems to be none of those things.

Just not a fan of working for people with known drug addiction issues.

Makes for an unstable, disruptive work environment.

Florio is now saying that the drama was apparently real, but is now over.

PFT is reporting that "something weird" happened in the last 24 hours and a lot of strange messages were going back and forth, but that Josh McDaniels is now prepared to "follow through on his promise" and take over the Colts.

Gotta wonder what happened in the interim. The scenario that makes the most sense (at least theoretically) is indeed that maybe he thought Belichick was retiring, but who knows?

Regardless, looks like the Colts don't have to go back to square one.
