Well, Gantt is saying someone's screwed

Listening to Darin Gantt,  no real good is going to come from this untimely accusation and dismissal. He doesn't appear as high on our prospects a.k.a our "Rooney Rule compliance," and says this Hurney situation could blow up in the franchise's face no matter how you slice it. 

 

"So in the short term, the Panthers are likely going to choose who handles those duties while the league does its thing. Sticking with Hurney would likely cause some (more) public relations backlash, but hiring one of their other candidates will cause plenty of football problems. None of the candidates they interviewed last week has any meaningful background with coach Ron Rivera and his staff, the team’s scouts or the player personnel on hand."

 

Gantt points to all the coming decisions in free agency that the Panthers have to make and says that it's, "Probably more work than a guy who needs directions to the executive bathroom is going to be able to handle efficiently. Drafts are projects months in the making, and a new G.M. will be cramming for a final without notes."

Gantt goes on about how this may look kinda crazy to a new owner,  and alludes to people's jobs bring on the line if this thing turns into a complete dumpster fire. 

 

"The people involved in the Panthers’ decision-making process have known Hurney for years, and have known that his divorce was a bad one (by the standards in which even the good ones are awful)...If they keep him now, there’s a better chance for stability on the football side for the coming season, which increases the chances for stability elsewhere in the organization under new ownership. If they don’t and the team struggles in front of the new boss, the changes in the building are going to be bigger than one man, one free agent or one draft pick."

 

I would say that this is just a case of Gantt being Gantt,  but he does bring up some reasonable points.  I do believe it was him who basically said that everyone knows Hurney is going to get the job (and how the Rooney Rule was being mocked yet again), but at least he is getting down to the real reasons why he believed that Hurney may have been---oh, snap, be---the best choice (and maybe even the front office's thinking behind it).

Does Gantt not know that Jimmy Raye, Ron Rivera and Norv Turner all worked together with the Chargers?

I must say that Gantt is being rather dismissive of Jimmy Raye III and company.

Hurney’s issues are his issues.    leave them with him

I'm going to go ahead and say that working with Ron in the past should not necessarily be a significant factor in this decision,  much less the deciding one.  Of course, he might say different. I think you have to weigh everything.

Raye worked with the Chargers as a scout, Director of College Scouting and then Director of Player Personnel from 1996 through 2012.

Norv Turner was with the Chargers twice during that period. He was their offensive coordinator for one year (2001) and then took the head coaching reins from 2007 to 2012. 

Ron Rivera was there as Turner's linebacker coach and later defensive coordinator from 2007 through the 2010 season. He took the Panthers job in 2011.

So six years of working with Turner and four with Rivera...

I'd call that "meaningful background", but that's just me.

All Gantt does is poo on the Panthers ever simce he was pulled off of yhe Panthers beat by the Rock Hill Herald. Anytime Gantt is talking Panthers you can guarantee it's going to be in a negative light.

Gantt did nothing but defend Fox and Hurney while he was here. I would pay no attention to him.

Given the mess that we have right now, I think it matters. I'd much rather go into free agency and the draft with two guys that know each other as opposed to ones that are just getting acquainted.

Dawson and Mayhew certainly have good resumes, but they'd just be getting to know Rivera and what he wants in a player. Raye would likely already know that.

No. Continuity is only a good thing if you're good at your job. Hurney isn't
