Giants hire Mike Shula as OC

Did GMan have some control over Shula being hired as OC with the Giants, probably. Anyone who has let someone else hire the people that work under them directly know that there's really only so much input you have. About the only thing you really get to do is say, absolutely no way are you hiring based on this reason, usually drug/criminal. One thing I've learned is you can't force chemistry. If for whatever reason Shula and Shurmur have working chemistry, then you kind of have to let it be. About all that I can really see Gman telling Shurmur is that if this repeats like it did here, then either Shurmur can fire him, and quickly, or can pack his own box as well.

Not really . His plays were too complex

They just required perfect execution from everyone and teams never have a roster full of perfect players. You have to be extreamly lucky and your QB has to be unstoppable. Like us in 2015. Yet it got shut down bc Shula couldn't change anything to win.

Only place I have ever really heard Shula's play design questioned has been here on the Huddle. Outside of that, it has largely been praised whenever I've heard it discussed. Now the actually play calling might have come into question, but not his ability to design plays as they are widely considered some of the most creative in the league.

Of course when you pigeon hole yourself and the only thing you ever read is "Shula sucks", and  comments about "crayons", and "checkers vs chess" eventually that's what you believe because that's all you care to know.

could be

it could also be possible that they really only want him to be a QB coach and the OC is just a title for the benefit of his resume. or he is going to help with getting the players to learn and run pat’s offense on the field. either scenario would justify being named an OC in a team where the HC has an offensive background.

That's probably pretty close to reality. I guess we'll see.

My take: Shurmur might have wanted Shula as QB coach, but we know from a recent story that Shula wanted to be an OC. Since they lost out on the OC they wanted, Shurmur may have gone to Shula with an offer to give him an OC title even if his job primarily involved QB coach duties.

All speculation, of course...

You can talk down to people and be as condescending as you want but there's no way you can spin this into a positive.

Man f Scot.. He is a hypocrite of the highest order.. He made this place unbearably when his boy got fired.. And was a Debbie Downer all season.. Some ppl want to act like he is some great poster and panther fan.. But when Gman was fired he had the biggest hissy fit ever and pretty much quit on the team. So f scot..

Well, given that you're not following any of what's actually happening, I'm left with the conclusion that either you're ignoring it or you're not terribly bright.

You tell me which it is.

There's actual intelligent conversation going on in this thread. You're not taking part in any of it of course.

You clearly don't remember all of the plays where the receivers routes turned into one giant cluster fug in the same area.

Not sure how many games outside of the Panthers you watch but that happens every game, to every team. Some of that believe it or not is by design while some of it is receivers screwing up their routes.

I've watched a few at least, and I have to say it seemed to happen to the Panthers a lot more often than other teams.

Louis Riddick criticized his route design in a critique of either our last game of the season or the only playoff game (I forget which one).

Looks like the Giants are going to be following the Eagles example of having an offensive head coach call the plays while the coordinator serves primarily as a position coach. One difference being that the Giants will have the OC and QB coach consolidated into one person.

Wait wait.. There were many question about his route combination and his use of a deep route schemes when his Oline couldn't block for a 3 step drop let alone a 7 step drop.. Let's not play revisionist history.. Shula was question about play calling and passing scheme.. Now running scheme was his strength...

    • It was absolutely a catch, and I can’t believe how many folks were stating, before the NFL’s apology, that the overturn was the right call.  The ultimate question in this case is this: can a player complete a catch with only one hand? Of course, we all know the answer to that question, and it is an emphatic “Yes.” T-Mac maintained complete control with one hand (believe it was the right) while the other came off when the ball hit the ground. The ball was in the same position in the one hand (watch T-Mac’s fingers in relation to the NFL shield on the ball) after touching the ground as it was when it first went to the ground. Going back to the question above, if one hand can establish control, then there was no need for the other to stay on the ball, so long as the ball doesn’t move in that one hand that stays on it   It blew my mind that they overturned this in the first place. This should not be a “We got it wrong on the replay because there wasn’t clear and convincing evidence.” This should have been, “That was absolutely a catch.”
    • Sign him up. I am willing to bet he wouldn't finish a game with -2 yards.
    • He is just fuging limited in every way.  On one hand, and nfl player, you would want to bulk them up so long as it doesn’t limit their mobility, elasticity, flexibility, ROM, or dynamicism - as is the concern with bulking up.  But the issue with that is, you would be worried about that when a guy has those traits to begin with.  Bryce is a very average athlete with a weak arm.  So if you’re not gonna be a great athlete with a strong arm, bulk up.  And if you can’t or won’t bulk up, find another fuging profession that doesn’t require athleticism and arm strength.  You’re built like a bitch AND aren’t a great athlete - you can’t be subpar in both categories…  well, unless you play for the Panthers apparently.
