Every GM Drafting rankings over thier tenure

"Interesting" isn't the first word I'd use :)

Two of the guys actually ranked above Hurney (former Chargers GM AJ Smith and former Cardinals GM Rod Graves) were let go by the teams that employed them.

Also, by whatever metric this guy is using, Smith and Graves along with Hurney and Bill Polian are better drafters than Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome and Steelers GM Kevin Colbert.

Even among the guys that favor Hurney over Gettleman, you'd have to go to a serious extreme to try to push that argument.

No. Your reading the chart incorrectly. Read the blue to the right. Ozzy is 2nd in total av. He's just bad in AVG They are separated by Average and Total AV

For anyone not knowing what AV is

Approximate Value (AV) method is an attempt to put a single number on the seasonal value of a player at any position from any year

AV is not meant to be a be-all end-all metric. Football stat lines just do not come close to capturing all the contributions of a player the way they do in baseball and basketball. If one player is a 16 and another is a 14, we can't be very confident that the 16AV player actually had a better season than the 14AV player. But I am pretty confident that the collection of all players with 16AV played better, as an entire group, than the collection of all players with 14AV."

If I sort by that column, Mike Brown and Jerry Jones are better drafters than Hurney while guys like Hurney, Smith, Graves and Mickey Loomis rank higher than guys whose teams won Super Bowls. Heck, if you go down the list he's got Matt Millen ranked better than John Elway.

And Belichick as the top drafter?  Top as an overall GM perhaps but some of Belichick's drafts are awful.

Sorry, but this is a tad too "PFF" for me.

Loomis did win a Super Bowl, for the record.

Here is something looking at more recent drafts

Last 5 years, not including 2017.

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2017/04/nfl-draft-performance-grades-best-drafting-teams-picks-classes-2012-2016

#1 Seattle

#2 Carolina

This includes Hurney's 2012 draft, which is our best in the last 5 years.  But Hurney also has two of our worst 3 picks over that time, Adams and Silatou.  Tampa is 11th, Atlanta is 12th, while the Aints are 15th.  Of course, if you include this years picks, I imagine New Orleans would move up quite a bit.

    • I just dont get the worry over losing a practice squad player that just went undrafted. Everyone just made their selections. The chances of a team wanting to sign him to an active roster after not selecting him is very low.  If that interested they would have taken him late to evaluate in person. As far as I can tell two qbs were signed off another teams practice squad last season and they were both going in to their 5th season.
    • I enjoyed reading this thread and the usual banter that follows. The only silver lining I can identify right now is we do actually have a couple of young QB's behind him and we do have a nice roster on both sides of the ball built around the most important position. So if the team overall shows some promise but we still falter largely due to a lack of consistent passing output (again) hopefully the decision makers can be free to make the best decision for the team going forward after the conclusion of this upcoming season.
    • I don't really follow the team anymore due to a variety of reasons and consequently have largely stopped posting but I agree that this is a lovely website and community. This forum probably kept me around for years longer than I would've stuck otherwise because of how difficult it was to stop checking multiple times a day. Especially appreciate how lax the moderation tends to be compared to a lot of places, the crew here does a great job. Out of curiousity I decided to try making a new account (solely for testing purposes) to see what exactly is wrong with the sign up process. The issue seems to be that it never sends you an account verification email, thus making it impossible to complete registration. This is likely something to do with the email server upstream, hope it gets fixed. Also, lol
