With Stewarts Release, Will McCaffrey start at RB?

Suddenly CMC is the most productive RB we have left on the roster. I see Fozzy being cut, Artis Payne is on a super cheap contract so he stays . Not sure if the coaches really beleive in Artis Payne as a workhourse back.

So really, its coming down to either CMC or drafted RB being the major ball carrier. I'm curious whether the coaches will be willing to give McCaffrey more carries . He only got 10+ carries in 3 contests last season, with him collectively avering in those games over 4 ypc and we won all of those games.Im super curious what he would do with a heavier load or just more chances at running.

The general consensus seems he cant be relied upon as the main back. But did he ever really get the chance to BE the main back?

Its unlikely he changes his running style but I think hes going to come in to 2018 season heavier 210 to 215 lbs  (its not a huge difference, he was listed 205 to start 2017) . If he does get 10lbs of muscle it would help him massively running in crowds and with the arm tackles.

If/when defenses start loading the box to stop CMC,  I have my reservations. Sure he can do a not-so-cheap imitation,  but I just don't believe that he is a real power back, and that will ultimately be a problem if that is the expectation (which I don't think that it will be).

if they keep stacking the box we should be bombing it down the field anyway, and some play action and draws.

The good thing with CMC is its not very clear we are running or passing

I believe CMC role as a receiver grows more.

2019 RB:

1A: Chubb

1B: CMC

2: CAP

You're preaching to the choir.

Is that more a luxury or just a reality of the situation? Lucky for us that CMC might be complete enough, in the sense that when he comes in,  the opposition is not really sure if he's going to run between the tackles or catch it out in the flat.  Essentially tipping your hat to the opposition is not the ideal situation,  but if you have a good line and other weapons you can get away with it.

the panthers need another capable back. period.

the talent level after mccaffrey drops off considerably.

that's whay stewart was around 1-2 seasons longer than he should have been....there was nothing after him.

carolina doesn't need another double trouble. they just need a decent number 2.

Double Trouble

ATL: Freeman & Coleman

NO: Ingram & Kamara

Philly: Ajayi ,Clement  & Barnes

etc

CAP was better than Stew this year.

Bring in a relatively affordable FA RB to spell him, but yeah a top 10 pick should be the starter period.

We could go FA or mid-late round draft pick, which considering the position should be able to step in as a solid #2 immediately. And I wouldn't rule out CAP. He showed some really solid power and agility and vision this year. I'd prefer to spend as little as possible at the HB position. Spend money at WR or CB/S.

    • So, objectively, you'd say from a holistic review of Rico's performance and the team overall there were at least a dozen players on the team that performed at least as well if not better in their roles?
    • I'm not a huge fan of BY, but he does have some clutchness developing
    • While you're correct, people are just sick of being told, "you don't understand this, you're dumb" despite what their eyes say. This applies to the Panthers and anything else in life. This board can be a miserable place, but this isn't the old days anymore because Social Media & Reddit have hijacked old-school forum users.  I have in the last year or so taken a massive step back from Social Media & Reddit. Deleted accounts on both, I only have X/Twitter now. But I was looking for an outlet for Panthers talk and I did not want to do that on X much at all. There are only two legitimate outlets for that I've found, here and SB Nation. SB Nation I used to partake in, but they absolutely bumble-f*cked the comments section, and I like the setup of the posts + comments, as opposed to article + comments. Also, as others have pointed out, being a Panthers fan has been a horrendous existence since Cam left. Just an awful crew of coaches, draft picks, trading away great players, etc. It's been miserable.  Ever since Tepper bought the team, I hoped that he commit to a full rebuild. He never did, he thought there were shortcuts and so did Rhule. This hamstrung us for years, and then he massively overstepped with the BY trade.  This ruined the team building, because there was no depth, and then it ruined nuanced BY discussions because of the insane haul we gave up. He will never live up to that, I think many people are finally wrapping their heads around that now which is good. The best thing for this board to get better is for the Panthers to win more, draft well, and to stay committed to crawling through this Andy Dufrense poop-pipe to escape the depths of NFL hell. It will be ugly and stink along the way, but you can see already this year if we commit to drafting then the team and the vibes can turn around quicker than you think.  I am extremely optimistic about the draft class this season, it's something to watch, talk about, and celebrate. It also gives Dan and I think by extension Dave Canales more of a leash, which I think we need to give them and grant them the time to turn this boat around.
