Still waiting on that Shep cut...

Me too. I think it'll happen once we have signed a FA WR. I certainly hope so. We signed him to contribute at WR and be an elite special teamer. He has been neither. He isn't worth his cap hit and we'd save over $2M by releasing him. I honestly thought he'd hit the door with Stew and CJ. IMO Stew, CJ, and Shepard were the three no-brainer cuts to make.

And if we really do go after a top free agent receiver, it could be significantly less than that...quickly.

Maybe but a deal for one of them could easily be a tiny cap hit this year with most of it backloaded. That's Hurney's forte...

And that thought makes me cringe.

No me, not necessarily. It's all about the guaranteed money. I'd take a backloaded deal similar in structure (but not volume) to the contract GB gave Davante Adams. It's majorly backloaded, but backloaded with base salary. That's not dead money on the cap if he ends up getting released. The issue with Hurney is that after the first two "cheap" years of that contract, Hurney would convert big chunks of that salary into bonus to spread it out over the remaining years and that DOES create dead money on the cap and that's where he'd get himself into trouble. Robbing Peter to try to pay Paul.

It's the "kicking the can down the road" approach that scares me.

We've seen it before, and we've seen it blow up in our faces.

    • It’ll be interesting to see how the board falls I completely agree with you on TE for us The safety from Oregon would be the cherry on top for Evero’s defense/scheme.  If a OL’men is there that you love it would be very hard to pass up. This fan base seems to just see Walker as a stop gap but I wouldn’t be so sure. He’s the same age as Ekwonu. He’s had a much more impressive career arc/progression than Icky has. He’s the better pass protector. As far as I see it if Walker has a good year I’d bring him back over Icky. Ekwonu isn’t some elite franchise LT. Playing next to Lewis is going to be great for Walker much like it has been for Icky. We definitely need to get younger/cheaper on the OL though so for this reason alone it’s still top of my list come round 1 if board falls this way  Could also use another corner with Mike Jackson’s deal up after this season and needing a nickel but Corey Thornton looked really good in that role in the limited time we got to see him. However he’s coming off an achillies injury and you never know with those.  Then as mentioned above we do still have a need at WR. As far as “weapons” go it’s kind of a 2 man show with Tmac and Coker and neither is a burner. If Jordan Tyson is there at 19 and we can have a young WR group locked up for cheap that’s a huge advantage cap wise  And don’t forget linebacker. That clip in Devin’s Lloyd blueprint they used from Evero saying they need more intelligence there could’ve been left out for Wallace’s sake but it’s true. Wallace is lost in coverage. Pair a smart linebacker with Lloyd and that’s a group with Wallace and Cherelus being depth
    • The fact that this is even a discussion is a testament of the level of front office badassery that's going on.
    • Not always. LT was for the Giants. So was Ray Lewis. Von Miller was moreso than Manning his final year in the season that shall not be named. It's usually the QB, but not always.
