On 3/11, Stephen Igoe at 247 Sports talks Moncrief

This article is a little dated,  but now that the two dominoes have fallen,  perhaps Hurney will get down to business of luring and signing Donte Moncrief.

"That minimal production means Moncrief will likely be overlooked a bit on the free agent market, and after Robinson and Watkins set the market, the Panthers and other teams looking to add more of a second-tier receiver can then put their focus into getting involved with Moncrief. Despite his lack of proven production, Moncrief's profile as a receiver is intriguing. He's a legitimate 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, and blew away everyone at the NFL Combine four years ago when he ran a 4.40 40-yard dash, vertically leaped 39.5 inches and turned in a broad jump of 132 inches. On measurables only, Moncrief has the makings of a No. 1 receiver."

Now the "minimal production" that Igoe refers doesn't  exactly wow you,  but put things in perspective, and even if Moncrief  can consistently put up his "best" in the NFL so far,  then his production would fit in with the Panthers quite nicely.  Sure,  he had a couple of down years between being hampered by injuries and playing with sub-par QBs,  but unlike Sammy Watkins who had the table set out for him but didn't eat last year,  Moncrief didn't have that situation. But he still has the measurables,  people. And,  he still had 700 plus yards with 64 receptions and six scores.  Even at about 300 yards in '16, he still had seven TDs. So, there is some potential there.  There is likely upside still untapped,  and playing with Cam, Funchess and company can help bring it out.

Now I am not saying that he is the answer to our prayers, but he can be an answer. Honestly,  it would have been nice,  but we don't need Watkins or A-Rob (especially at those terms---bad deals). For us,  Moncrief could turn out an infinitely better value.

Gotta pay to play.  It's always been that way.

You just don't want to be stupid.

It actually hasn't always been that way in the NFL.

FA started in 92' and the crazy bullshit like with Albert Haynesworth is still a recent thing in the NFLs lifespan. The biggest portion of the NFL's fanbase still grew up with an NFL that wasn't like that at all.

Okay.

There used to be a time when the average Joe could take his family to a game without taking out a second mortgage on his house too,  but those days are long gone. The NFL makes crazy amounts of money,  and now the players are commanding their piece.  It's just how it is.

To piggy back this:

So when you grew up in the 80s and 90s watching it....we're talking poo money by comparison and when you look at how the cap has soared and the NFL's profit as well....it's a new thing because of the current cash cow status that simply wasn't the same back in the day. Especially the people who grew up watching in a time when the players still had regular jobs so...not always been that way so it's understandable for people to have an older mentality about players and money.

Wow Albert Wilson just got 3 year 24 mil. Not looking good at getting another wr in FA!!!!

6-8 mil per year is becoming average.  No surprise.  The devil is in the details though. The contract structure, including the guaranteed money is what makes the deal.
