Pistons Offered Tobias Harris and First Rounder For Kemba

Recommended Posts

There were rumors that the Pistons, Cavaliers, and Knicks were all interested in Walker but obviously no deal materialized and no proposed deals were ever leaked... until now.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the Pistons offered Tobias Harris and a protected first round draft pick for Kemba Walker and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

Now assuming that the protected first round pick in the proposed trade was only slightly protected (i.e. top 3) and it was also for this year (2018), would you have made the proposed deal knowing that the Hornets could have potentially packaged both of their picks to move into the top 5 with the option of selecting from someone like Ayton, Bagley, Bamba, Doncic, Porter, or Jackson Jr.?

On the surface this seems pretty one sided for the Pistions.  Harris is pretty good and the first would be nice but Kemba and MKG (salary dump I assume) seems worth more.  We didn't do it so I guess it wasn't sweet enough.  I probably agree.

If we would’ve made that deal and it was their 1st from this year, I think Pistons would’ve definitely made the playoffs, so their pick would’ve been 14th-16th overall.  Not worth it, imo.  Also, we would’ve obviously lost more games than what our current record stands at, but I don’t think we would have a worse record than the bottom 7 teams, so we would currently be projected to have the 8th-10th pick.  Now, if that was the case, I would definitely love to package 8th-10th overall pick and the 14th-16th overall pick to move into the top 5.  But if you’re one of those teams in the top 5, would you even take that deal? Losing out on those top 5 players you mentioned, just to get an extra pick? I certainly wouldn’t.  So if trading Kemba, meant we would move up a couple picks from our current position, while receiving a mid 1st rounder, then i’m glad they didn’t accept that deal.  Kemba is worth more than that.

Keep in mind that the Pistons wouldn't have landed Griffin if they traded for Kemba because of the pieces involved. If Griffin and Drummond couldn't get the Pistons to the playoffs, I don't specifically know if Kemba and Drummond could have. I think we would have seen their pick right around where it is now and obviously as you mentioned we could have probably fallen to around the 8-10 range.

Playing devils advocate, I think the 8th and 12th pick could certainly get us into the top 5.

Yeah if there was a guarantee that the Pistons pick would’ve been a lottery pick, I would’ve definitely done that trade.  I just think Kemba would’ve made more of a positive impact for them than Blake.  But in order to move to the top 5, I think it would still take more than 8 and 12.  I just find it hard for a team to move out of the top 5 with the type of talent the top 5 prospects offer, unless they’re offered a crazy deal.

A deal for Kemba would have to be a similar to the Kyrie deal. Irving isn't that much better he is just younger but also has an injury history. At the time Kemba had a year and a half of 12 million per year salary which is one of the best values in the NBA.

I want 2 first rounders, one in the top three, plus taking batum and his salary...and a later first rounder in 2019

I want 4 first rounders and they take Batum, Howard, MKG and Zeller.  Need those 4 firsts in the lottery too.

    • I'm salty every time I see someones mid picks become stars while we throw first and second rounders over and over and they all stink outside of Tet (who still has a lot to prove, imo)
    • There is a contingent that is total Bryce but they weathervane with the wind. When the good Bryce wind blows about once or twice a month we hear a lot from them. But they are always pro Bryce, they just don’t pipe up too much when he sucks. I can’t speak for them, as far as what they are looking at.    In a second contingent, the collective mind is made up. He has had had basically three years worth of starts that might include a top tier outing or two, a few second tier outings, offset by about the same number of bottom tier outings which actually may have the edge there.  The rest of his stuff is third tier and that is going to be the bulk of his starts. We want to move on. And we aren’t getting off of that hill until he puts us off of it. He has not.    There is a third contingent that has no conviction and definitely weather vanes. Bryce is good. Bryce isn’t good. Depending on the latest game. They will buy into 7 on 7 success so that should tell you something.
    • Nacua is really fuging good. He might be a better version of Cooper Kupp.
