Cappy's 7 Round Mock

Captain Morgan

Recommended Posts

TLDR.....if you scroll WAAAAAAAY down the page to end, you'll see my picks without all the choices and comments.

Let me start by saying mocks are pretty worthless, especially when posters start adding in proposed trades.  To keep it as close to an imagined reality as possible, this mock was done using Fanspeak's Composite ranking of players.  There is no ideal alternative, but this at least gives a decent idea of what a lot of draft gurus think, all averaged in together.  Do not waste anyone's time arguing if a player is over or under ranked...your opinion is no better than the 20 or so used in this composite.

This is merely how I would go if I was making the decisions as each round develops according to the model that Fanspeak provides.  Please do not argue methodology or talent levels, it is pointless to discuss that.

Feel free to comment on my choices based on my observations of our front office and our needs.  Bash away if you want at my choices, but don't tell me that a player, for example, 158 WR  EQUANIMEOUS ST. BROWN - NOTRE DAME, is going to be ranked higher than this composite has him because you think so.  It's pointless to discuss that kind of thing.  These are the choices I've made based on the info from the Fanspeak program.
That said, I'm really interested in your opinion about what choices you'd make.

Enjoy and convince me where I'm wrong!

Round 1:  Here are our options.  We know we've seen our new OC all giddy over DJ Moore, and I wouldn't mind that pick because we can still get a very good CB in the 2nd....meaning we won't be able to take a TE, OL (interior), or S until the third.  The top 3 targets at TE and OL probably will not be there for us in the third, so I'm taking the best player available here, who happens to be at a position of need.  I'm tempted to take Billy Price to play guard this year and start at center in year two....butHurney says we need to get faster and younger around the edges.  Welcome your Day One starter at cornerback...Josh Jackson.

Round 2

Look at those tasty CBs at the top of the available players left...but the decision has been made.   Also note VERY tempting safetys in Reid and Bates.  Top interior line choices are gone and it's a looong drop off till the next level.  Which is why I'm taking Hurst in the 2nd.  There is also a pretty big drop in talent after Hurst at TE, and there will be good options at safety in the next round.

Welcome to the team Hayden Hurst, who is physically developed and ready to step in if Greg goes down again.  Remember, Greg broke his foot in a non-contact play.  We really need someone we can depend on if Greg goes down, and Hayden should be able to step in as a starter next season after a year of tutelage from the only TE to have 3 consecutive 1k seasons.

Round 3, pick one.
Here's where it gets interesting...

I truly believe we need a safety in round 3.  I've been hoping Bates would fall, but in this scenario...no.  We do have several choices at safety and WR, not to mention C Cole, who no one has talked about.  The second best player available here is a safety...welcome to the team Kyzir White.  If you hate him, you can take Edmunds or Marcus Allen, both similarly ranked.

Round  3, pick 2

Our defensive backfield is now significantly improved, and we're safe at TE.  Remaining needs that fit our pick are WR, OL, Edge, possibly RB.
It's a tough decision...we don't pick again till late in the 5th...this pick needs to count.  I really want Cole or O'Neill for the OL.   Royce is a sexy pick at RB.  But when I think about our WR position if Devin gets hurt.....gotta go with a receiver that we like and have met with...welcome Daesean Hamilton.  May never be a star, but a very safe pick here, and with the price of WRs in free agency lately, we need to keep getting young talent.

Round 4:  no pick here, because we traded for a punter irrc that isn't even on the team anymore.  Oh well, no use crying over spilled milk, especially since our history of picking in the 4th round is historically terrible.

In Round 5, I'd like to find OL help, possibly a backup QB...we've met with Riley Ferguson, but we may be able to get him in the 6th.  I'm not interested in DL help at this level although the top 3 picks are BPA, wouldn't be surprised to take Love's future replacement, but linebacker comes into play. ...so does RB.  OT Gates would be a nice backup as Moton moves into LG.   I hate to pass on Cichy and Skai Moore, but I think it's easier to find free agent depth at LB that it is at OL....welcome OT Nick Gates to the Panthers.

We do still have some holes to fill, but at this point in the draft, you have to take the BPA at any position, right?
I'm skipping way down the list ( so far I'm not even showing all the players before his position)  to get our backup QB, Riley Ferguson.  We have shown interest.  sucks to have a 6th round backup rookie QB, but he does have a high ceiling.  Look at Bo Scarbrough still undrafted at this point.

Round 6.

Round 7, pick  2   ...could take a project RB, but I think we can pick up better talent later this summer after cuts start coming in.  Lot of RBs drafted in 2018 and 2017....should be some good talent that gets cut that we can pick up to compete with Fozzy.  I'll take G Teuhema and hope he can make the practice squad.

TE in the 1st and secondary help in the mid rounds aka safety not CB.

I have been meaning to ask you...would you rate OJ Howard above Hurst or any other TE in this draft?  How bout Engram or Njoku?  I don't see a first round TE in this draft.  Am I crazy?

No more beating around the bush...we need offense.  If a major pass rusher is there fine.  Otherwise, let Norv pick and choose and lets get TD makers.  Period.  I can't recall many games where the Panthers got up 10 + pts and lost.  Our defense is really good right now.  It just is.  We can't have games scoring 13 pts.  We need 30 pts a game.  Don't see us losing much.  Yeah, the Saints would be the outlier there.  Fuggin Brees.

Lots of CBs on the team.  Safety is a need yes, Reid is not a first rounder.  Sorry.  Like Kyzer White.  If at all possible trade down a little and get OFFENSE.  Grab a safety (who more than likely won't contribute now) and get TD making players.  I want CMC to be an after thought for a defense.  He will kill even more than last year.  Points.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
