Panthers 1st round big board.

I won't be upset with any of the following

Any round 1 O-lineman (not a sexy pick, but a quality one that helps build the team for years to come)

DJ Moore or Calvin Ridley (don't love either of these guys but I think they could contribute to our team- I highly suspect both will be gone by our pick, look at last year for example. That was a "weak" WR class and 2 WRs went in the top ten)

Any of the top tier CBs (my favorite selection- best position value for most needed position)

Any top prospect that were to fall (i.e. Derwin James)

I will be upset if we draft a 25 year old TE who hasn't played football that long and in last year's draft would have been a third round pick

I don't see a WR because they need someone who can make an impact this year and they have decent group. Maybe TE if the right guy falls because Greg is coming off an injury and he's older, but a 2nd TE who could catch is another weapon in 2 TE sets, so another reason no to WR.

If a great DE falls, I can see that. We need a rotation player with a high upside that can contribute this year along side Peppers.

What I do think they'll pick is CB. You need at least 5 top guys to make it through camp and the year. We have 3 and a few unknowns. Again if the right one drops.

Even though OL would be nice, we've gotten some good starter late in the draft or underrated like Norwell, I don't see it 1st.

Safety is the wild card that if one of the top 2 drop, then that might be it. But a lot of teams need safety. I see a S or TE in the 2nd if either not picked in the first.

WR is 3rd or later. RB is 4th or later, if they do that at all.

No matter what, they did their homework so I trust they'll have their reasons to why they target certain guys. It's still a crap shoot if they pan out and stay healthy.

I wouldnt be against double dipping on the secondary in the first 2 rounds if Ridley and Moore are off the board.  Getting Jackson or Alexander in the 1st and then getting Reid or Bates in the 2nd would go a long way to helping us improve our secondary, which has been gutter trash since SB 50.

Just dug a little deeper on the last 5 drafts arrived at this conclusion.

Short version = top 22 most likely gone by our pick.

  • 5 QB'S, Darnold, Allen, Rosen, Mayfield,Jackson
  • 3 DE's Chubb, Davenport,Landry
  • 3 Corners Ward,Alexander,Jackson
  • 2 LB's, Smith,Edumunds,
  • 2 WR's, Ridley and Moore
  • 2 Tackle's, McGlinchey and Williams
  • 2 Safties, Fitzpatrick and James
  • 2 DT Vea and Payne
  • 1 RB, Barkley
  • 1 G, Nelson

The additions to that list from the original top 15 list are in bold.Of those additions  that would hurt us the most imo would be Alexander,Jackson, Ridley and Moore. All players I'm pretty much locked into hoping make it to 24.

In order for one of them to fall to us we need to see all of the other players listed above go, plus 1 of these potential 1st round candidates.

  1. Rashan Evans (LB)
  2. Leighton Vander Esh (LB)
  3. Hughes (CB)
  4. Taven Bryan (DT)
  5. Isiah Wynn (G/T)
  6. Will Hernandez (G)
  7. Guice (RB)
  8. Ronnie Harrison (S)
  9. James Daneils (C/G)

****Below is a detailed look at how I arrived at the above and only worth reading if your curious about how I came up with this list***

On average here is the number of prospects taken by position between 1-23.

  • 4 Tackles
  • 3 DE'S
  • 3.2 WR'S
  • 2.8 Corner's
  • 2.4 LB'S
  • 2 QB'S
  • 1.6 Safeties
  • 1.4 DT's
  • 1  RB'S
  • .8 Tight Ends
  • .6 Guards
  • .2 Centers

So the following bares out perfectly with the 5 year average

  • 3 DE= Chubb,Landry, Davenport
  • 1 RB= Barkley
  • 1 G = Nelson

Rounding up or down these match the 5 year average as well

  • 1 DT = Vea
  • 2 Safeties = Fitzpatrick, James

This year I expect to be above average

  • 4 QB'S, + 2 Above average

then i'm light against average in these positions. Meaning they are most likely to fill in slots 16-23

  • 4 Tackles short  vs average
  • 3.2 WR's short vs average
  • .8 Corner short vs average
  • .4 DT short vs average
  • .4 LB short vs average
  • .2 Centers short vs average

In the last 5 years only 6 positions had at least 1 player picked in the top 23. The latest those positions were picked as follows

  1. DE 3RD
  2. QB 3RD
  3. LB 9TH
  4. CORNER 11TH
  5. WR 15th
  6. Tackle 20th

So I can take that info and know I need to inject at least 1 if not 2 OT's.

I'll go ahead and pencil Mclginchey and Williams in there. WR's I'm short on too and will go ahead and pencil in Ridley and Moore before our pick. Corner i'm short just shy of 2 on so I'll pencil in ,Alexander and Jackson. Also shy a LB, so i'll go ahead and squeeze Rashan Evans in there as well. Now that the board of talent is getting thin, I'd say pretty safe assumption Lamar Jackson squuezes in here too.

That's,2 Tackles,2 WR's, 1 Corner, 1 Lb, and 1 QB to be added to the list of 15. Still need one more player to go on there and I think Daron Payne is the guy who makes in there. Theres 23 names total and we pick 24. Above I listed other fringe top 24 player's(highest listed names on consensus big board not listed above) as well to get a better gauge on who we should hope rises and who falls.

That's because other teams outside of the Cowboys  have bigger needs than WR. The Ravens could stand one, but they also need a right tackle badly, and it's arguably a bigger need than WR.

All that being said, I think the Cowboys may pick Courtland Sutton. The Ravens, Mike McGlinchey.

You never know though.

D.J. Moore may turn out to be the better receiver. Christian "Baby OBJ" Kirk may have something to say as well.

I'm just thinking with the market for WRs being so expensive we may see that value effect the draft value.

Possibly. But it's not like OTs are cheap. And to me, quality OTs, much less serviceable ones, are hard to come by. Moreover, in general a team would be foolish to neglect greater positions of need if better talent is there for those positions at the top of the draft in order to make effective luxury picks, especially because of markets that may change, rise, or fall from year to year depending on the dynamics of the day.

Based on everything I know, I am 99% confident that if D.J. Moore is available at 24 he is the pick.

As he should be. But I have a hard time seeing the Cowboys not selecting one of these WR's at #19. Also the Ravens have a need at WR.

While I want Moore or Ridley to be our pick, I don't think neither will be there. Im think we pick a secondary player.

Agree with your entire post and I will also add another thing that would upset me... using the #24 pick to reach on a RB.
