OPINION: Panthers will sign a veteran RB

Didn’t realize CAP is already 27. How much is left for him anyway before he really starts declining? 2-3 seasons?

And Fuzzy is 29.  It’s not like we are talking about the talent of Adrian Peterson.  Please tell what quality Fuzzy at 29 is gonna bring. So we have 2 rb’s on the roster.  CMC and Unproven Cap  I like CAP. I hope he balls out

Look I am just really disappointed in how we have addressed the position so far.

Here was the teams take from earlier in March.

HOPE FOR 2018: The Panthers seem to always manage to be close to the top of the NFL rankings in rushing yards – they have about 1,000 more yards on the ground than any other team over the past 10 seasons – but 2017 didn't feel like a year in which the running attack consistently controlled the course of games. Whether it's McCaffrey, Cameron Artis-Payneicon-article-link.gif or someone not currently on the roster, the Panthers need to get back to setting the tone early and putting down the hammer late with a traditional running game.

The free agent market has a few interesting names in terms of power backs, guys like up-and-comer Orleans Darkwa (the Giants' leader rusher in 2017) and up-and-down bruiser Jeremy Hill (buried on Bengals' depth chart in 2017). Two dozen backs easily could hear their names called at the 2018 NFL Draft, a deep class that even in the middle-to-late rounds could still include power runners like Josh Adams from Notre Dame and Bo Scarbrough from Alabama.

None of that has happened

We have a lot a work ahead of us in the position group.

The prospect of rolling into the season depending on CAP is pretty scary.

I would be interested to see a play for Demarco Murray or CJ Anderson. Also wouldn't mind seeing the Panthers sign someone like Elijah Hood off Oakland's practice squad, although he's unproven at the pro level.

I personally believe if CAP was the answer, he would have played more when we struggled to run last season.

If I had an option between CJ Anderson and CAP, I will take CJ Anderson.

No reason that you couldn’t sign him and have a 3-headed attack. CJA is past the days of 1000+ and 250 carries. He and CAP are essentially the same back. Anderson’s coaches just had the foresight to give him carries when there was an aging, washed up running back ahead of him. If CAP controls the ball and doesn’t fumble he’d be a solid back that with the right usage could probably go for 1000 yards.

CJA just had a 1000 yd season.. and 245 carries.  lol

Calling this one of the deepest running back drafts in years is a bit of a stretch. There were maybe 4 quality rbs in this draft in total.

last year’s draft was pretty deep at RB though. Maybe you are speaking about that?

as for signing a FA now - if you are free agent at this point in the season or after June 1st, it’s nit going to cost much to sign you for a year or two. So I wouldn’t worry about that.

it would be dramatic to think the panthers are backed into a corner right now. We have massive flexibility.

Nope.  Wasn’t talking about 17.  Here you go.  This is a good read.

I think Alex Armah emerges as our power back. Similar to what Tolbert did in San Diego, only more versatile. For a rookie out of a small school, Armah was very impressive on the touches he got.

Assuming CMC remains that Swiss Army knife, scattish style RB, that leaves us searching for that every down style back that’s well-rounded and could carry on all three downs. CAP may be that guy, but I would feel better bringing Murray in and let CAP take the reps from him. We know the front office had a heavy interest in Rashaad Penny, so evidently we are looking for that skill set and CAP may actually be our best option in that regard

I don’t know why anyone is wanting us to waste money on a RB when most are at the age that they have lost a step. CAP has put up decent numbers in limited action he won’t cost any more money and doesn’t have a lot of tread on his tires. I also think we will be fine without signing a RB because he won’t be getting that many snaps because CMC will be getting the majority of the workload. We also have Fozzy who can replace CMC if he gets injured.
