The Way Too Early 53*

Hey it's the week before mini-camp and the draft / UDFA are over and, well I'm bored...

QB-2

Cam Newton / Derek Anderson or Veteran (I think Gilbert goes back to the PS, and once we clear May 11th we look to add Anderson or a veteran)

Backfield-5

Christian McCaffrey / Cameron Artis-Payne / Free Agent / Bonnafon (I think at this point Fozzy is the odd man out, Bonnafon is more intriguing moving forward with his skill set) / Alex Armah

Receiver-6

Funchess / Moore / Smith / Wright / Samuel / Byrd (In my opinion the days of ST's dedicated spots ended with Gettleman's firing, goodbye Russell Shepard)

Tight End-3

Greg Olsen / Ian Thomas / Free Agent (I don't think Manhertz offers anything special, I could see a change at TE #3)

OL-9

Matt Kalil / Tyler Larsen / Ryan Kalil / Trai Turner / Darryl Williams / Amini Silatolu / Taylor Moton / Jeremy Sirles / Greg Van Roten or UDFA

DE-5

Mario Addison / Julius Peppers / Daeshon Hall / Wes Horton / Marquis Haynes

DT-4

Kawaan Short / Dontari Poe / Vernon Butler / Kyle Love

LB-7

Luke Kuechly / Thomas Davis / Shaq Thompson / David Mayo / Jared Norris / Jermaine Carter Jr. / Andre Smith

DB-5

James Bradberry / Ross Cockrell / Donte Jackson / Kevon Seymour / Corn Elder (I see Munnerlyn as the odd man out, after riffs about playing time, and the youth/speed movement I don't see spot for him)

S-4

Rashaan Gaulden / FA / Mike Adams / D'Norris Searcy (No ST's aces, we need additional S depth, and Jones' spot is too valuable not o upgrade)

Specialists-3

Graham Gano / Michael Palardy / J.J. Jansen

One thing.  You state 7 LB's but only list 6 of them.  Also I dont think they will cut Colin Jones and Shepard in the same season.  One of them yes but not both.  You must have forgoten Ron is a defensive coach an special teams are important to him.  Not "a punt is not a bad play" important, but still important.

Also Hurney has stated about 10 times that he wants a young QB to develop, so only 2 I kind of doubt it.

We need to make a change at QB and hopefully not keep Anderson and get another veteran or decent QB for his replacement.

I don't really disagree, but the available options have been picked over, and outside of Gilbert, and Anderson a back up would still have to come in and learn the offense. It's why I think inevitably we'll return DA, he his free agent value was assessed and in the end I think it'll be him.

Thanks, I added Norris, I forgot to type him in while trying to remember another name.

id plug moton in at LG

even if he is the long term LT, might as well get used to another position to provide flexibility

regardless, he is a big, power, talented man that moves other big powerful people

he needs to see the feild

I am VERY worried about DE depth. We need a vet signing.

I think Hall is a wild card

He could be the frnachises next stud DE. only way to find out is to play him..

BUT, we do need a backup plan if that doesnt happen.

I like Pepp, Addison, and Hall... I want another vet DE there..

but what about Haynes?

I'd like to see Moton at LG as well, you don't invest a 2nd rounder via trade up not to play him. I just think this staff favors veterans, and considering Larsen got all of those starts at C in Kalil's absence, and is 6'4'' / 325 lbs -- he along with Moton are along the same size as Norwell and he may get the nod. I hope it's Moton, but I think it'll be Larsen.

As a situational speed rusher, I actually really like this pick. I'd like to think the plan is to have him on either side of Addison, or Pep in Over & Under fronts as the 5th rusher limiting the chance of a double team on either.

Right now he's the only pure ''speed'' rusher that we have, and I think it could add a dimension on 3rd and pass that we haven't had in a while, especially in the Wide / A-Gap looks.

Addision / Butler / Peppers / Haynes

Could be a very interesting Nickel sub package for passing downs.

I see Haynes in the Bruce Irvin role. What Shaq was supposed to be. He's not going to be a fingers in the dirt DE this year. At least I don't think. We really don't have that many 3 down DEs... Addison leaves something to be desired in run defense and Horton is average. Peppers is situational and Hall is an unknown. We need a vet DE that can play all 3 downs.

its a delicate balance imo

i agree with you

its just the young guys have to play in order to know what we have. Hall needs the opportunity. A vet DE would take that away from him.. idk its tough. Hurney has a hard job lol

    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
