Matt "Speed bump McGee" Kalil..

I've been seeing a lot of huddlers here tear down Matt Kalil like he's the worst left tackle in the NFL. Frankly getting tired of it. But well the huddle is gonna huddle.

The following information if from a person that has access to coaches film and did a break down of every game Matt played in including the Saints playoffs game.. Props for Kevin A. For this information and thank you for your time on doing this.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Matt Kalil gave up 35 pressures and 5 sacks this season. In weeks 2, 3 and 7 he gave up 17 pressures and 5 sacks.

So if you exclude the Buffalo, Bears and the first Saints game, you're looking at 18 pressures and 0 sacks. So basically he had 3 horrible games which killed his PFF rating. Outside of that he was solid.

In the playoffs "Speed bump McGee" gave up only 2 pressures. That was the best among all of our lineman except for Trai. Sounds like Saints DE Cam Jordan was salty that Matt was working his ass. In fact, Jordan moved to the right side where he started working RT Daryl Williams because M. Kalil wasn't having it.

Matt Kalil had less penalties and less penalty yards than Nate Solder of the Patriots who many of y'all wanted in free agency. Lane Johnson of the Eagles had 10 penalties - Matt only had 7.

-------------------------------------------------

So there it is. That's your "Speed bump McGee"  last year.

We all know that one position that can be aligned inline to help speed bump by putting up some Bollards or go out wide and get you the necessary yards.

Good thing in about football scheme is that you can actually use 2 of them at the same time!

@Ivan The Awesome nice post. I think we are all very reactionary at times. The main issue that I saw early were the mental breakdowns and when they seemed to happen. It felt like every 3rd down one of those breakdowns would occur.

Now, one thing we all need to have is patience. Matt was coming off a year only playing 2 games. If he was a player we liked or drafted we would all be saying "He is rusty and this year he will be better now that he has an entire year to get healthy"

Is this your product of choice that you use on yourself?

Settle down Beavis.

In all seriousness I sincerely hope Matt Kalil has a solid year. Our season hinges on the ability of our OL to hold up, especially in a division with offenses like the Saints and Falcons where we will have to score often.

Everybody looks better when you drop their three worst games.  5 sacks in three games.  Sheesh.  Look, even the coaches were saying that Kalil needs to play better.  I agree that he looked better second half of the season than first.  He needs a better season this year, or he won't be sticking around.

Let me add to that, 3 bad games out of the first 7 makes a bad impression.  At least he had nowhere to go but up.

I imagine that Cam being a mobile qb can make a below average LT look at least average.

I think Cam's style of play makes it a bit harder.  He doesn't like to step up into the pocket, instead he backpedals back, giving the edges a direct line.  Not saying that I want Cam to be a Brady and step up, but it looks harder on the tackles.  Far easier to form a pocket so they lose the angle and have to go through the o-line.

    • I do think the rating is fair given how this unit hasn’t proven it with production. I understand you have to rank off production, not potential. However, our unit is also in a position to make this rating look foolish a year from now. We have 4 guys in the WR/TE room who all could legitimately take the next step this year, and catapult our rank. A guy under a lot of people’s radar after we took Tet, Jalen Coker. Mark my words, he will become the star of this room, and be the heir to Thielen.
    • Exactly. You’d think 2-7 wins a year (in a 17 game season no less) since 2017 is going to keep us bottom tier. Every year we say the same poo like we haven’t been a bad team the past 7 years. Until we prove we aren’t a bottom dweller, that’s where we’ll stay ranked. God forbid we have OL injuries like 2016.
    • What I love and hate about this team is it’s more filled with potential breakout players than ever before. JT, XL, Coker, Smith-Wade, Ikem, Trevin… and even Bryce are all guys I could legitimately see taking the next step. But the problem with having so many of those guys is that team success somewhat relies on them taking that step, and some are bound not to. That being said, I’m cautiously optimistic given our softer schedule, the way the offense clicked late last year, and the direction we finally have at GM, coach, and QB. Could see us as a sneaky playoff team.
