Turner wants Newton to be more consistent

Norv Turner: We're trying to eliminate Cam's peaks and valleys

Quarterback Cam Newton remains in place, although Turner is clear that he hopes to see some differences from him this season.

“But the one thing that I think when you look at it that we’re going to work hard to help him is, he has a large number of games where his quarterback rating is as high as anyone’s is,” Turner said on Sirius XM NFL Radio with Alex Marvez and Bill Polian. “It’s in the high 90s, low 100s. But in the middle of that, of a 16-game season, he has four or five games where that rating is not very good. And that, obviously, makes your average not as good as you’d like. So what we’re going to try to work hard for is eliminate the peaks and the valleys and try to, on a weekly basis, make it more consistent. And I think that’ll help us, offensively, be more consistent and certainly will help him.”

Increased consistency and precision passing from Newton have been frequent topics of conversation around the Panthers as the quarterback prepares for his eighth NFL season. The results of those efforts will determine whether Carolina’s offense moves in a new direction and should loom large over the team’s overall success for the year.

That Auburn homer is going to throw a hissy fit.

It will include some purposely misspelled words to mimic some straw-man argument. It will move toward that animated .gif of the laughing cowboy. It will end with a lifelong hatred of Turner.

I mean...can't we keep the peaks though?

Well, that's the age old question:  Would you rather have somebody who's sometimes great and sometimes terrible or someone who's consistently good?

Basically, Brady vs Favre.

Well, I think he means flattening out that curve and shifting the graph upwards. Making those valleys a lot closer to the peaks. Consistency will do that.

The biggest thing we can do to help him, something we almost all scream about every week, is making him not have to carry the entire offense every Sunday. I hope Norv is able to design an offense to be able to do that.

Makes sense. We all know Cam is as good as anyone when he’s on, but when he’s off he can look really bad. Fortunately, he has a lot more good games than bad and while every player is going to inevitably have some subpar games helping Cam he more consistent will definitely help the Panthers. I don’t think that’s entirely on Cam either. Norv is experienced enough and smart enough to realize every QB is going to have some off games and it’s up to him to adjust the offense when Cam is having an inevitable off game.

The goal you shoot for is certainly to be consistently great (ala Aaron Rodgers) but sometimes you have to choose a lesser option.

Will that be the case with Newton? Unknown, but I agree it's better for him if he's not forced to be both the quarterback and the running game.

The thing about gunslinger types is that they do have a tendency to ride rollercoasters, and efforts to take them off of those rollercoasters and put them on the ferris wheel don't always succeed. Sometimes you wind up putting them on the merry-go-round instead. That's what happened in some past seasons with efforts to make more consistent quarterbacks out of guys like Brett Favre and even Jake Delhomme.

All that said, Norv Turner has a track record that shows he knows what he's doing.

I'm hoping this produces the desired results.

No question about the mixed results when you try and "fix" the gunslinger mentality.

I hope the scheme changes and longer term personnel changes(OL, OL, OL, OL, OL, OL, OL, OL and also other stuff) might take some of the heat off of Cam, as well. I guess we will revisit this in Feb. and see what the results were from year one.

Yeah. Sometimes if you take the edge off a guy, you take away what makes him great.

Here's hoping for the best.
