TLDR version

There is a big difference in running style between Rookie CMC vs Sophomore CMC. Far less juking and dancing. Far more hitting the hole and relying on speed. I can see now that last year all that dancing was just a lack of confidence. Now his runs are much more deliberate, and it seems effective so far.

This actually pissed me off quite a bit, and I never get emotional about our coaching decisions normally.

We’ve taken a runner who was very effective at exploiting gaps with patience, quick cuts and acceleration in zone running schemes and put him into a power scheme last year. Then we all scratched our heads as to why he didn’t look as effective as we expected when he was hit within 2 yards on every run. Now we think the answer is to ask him to bulk up and turn him into more of a downfield one cut runner.

Be ****** creative for once and scheme the o line to actually shift and block horizontally to make the most of your top 10 running back. Jesus this is backward thinking.

Dude, you do realize Stanford runs a power scheme? They ran quite a bit of power and iso.

Well then you probably wouldn't have been very happy watching Le'Veon Bell's rookie season with the Steelers. In fact Bell was actually criticized quite a bit for being stuffed behind the line of scrimmage as a rookie. But the Steelers saw his potential and actually worked on allowing him to have even more space in the backfield turning him into one of the best RB in history. They didn't force his skillset and try and turn him into something he wasn't. 

God i hope we don't make that mistake.

Maybe you can wait until the end of preseason once we see how he does before complaining about how we use him.  At the end of last year he was pretty effective just the way he was even running and catching the ball against a loaded box with the defense keying on him.

I'm not an expert on Stanford but from everything I've seen they definitely weren't running Power-O or ISO in most of the clips I've seen of McCaffery's college career. Most of his big plays were in single back outside zone schemes and the power runs that you see show a pretty dominant Stanford line that can extend blocks which our line simply can't do.

In his sophomore season he had an experienced o line and he was given many lanes to run both in and out. The last year he had a young line more like our weak line but he was still able to run inside with speed and a few moves. Like the last 8 games last year where he averaged 4.7 I think he can excel now he has confidence He’s very talented

I absolutely hope you're right, but I'm not suggesting Cmac is talented enough to do it. I'm just annoyed that this could be another example of fitting your players into a scheme instead of scheming to your players' strengths (and weaknesses).

      There are several posters that only post negative at all times.   8 wins is a big jump from 5 and we still have 2 games.  Jaguars have a much more talented roster than us and have underachieved for years.

      All of this noise is just setting us up to lose Week 18 and proclaim life's not fair. If there's one thing I know in my 30+ years of watching the Hornets and Panthers, is that the bad guy always wins in the end. A team can be falling apart internally but we will still lose to them. A team's fanbase can be extra shitty and cocky and they will just win anyway. It always happens

      Well even if we took diverging paths getting there...our overall assessment of Shough is the same (bolded) lol so I guess that's what matters.  What you call "playing at a level that looks like a veteran starter" is the same thing I'm referencing when I talk about his poise.  Although I still wonder how truly "bad" of a team the Saints are.  Their defense is middle-of-the-road, and their offense does have some good pieces (Olave, Juwan Johnson) outside of running back which is the position most everyone agrees is relatively plug-and-play.  I'm not going to pretend to know anything about the majority of NFL team's o-lines lol but I'm assuming Saints are not great there, although Shough's pressure % seems to have been quite low (and steadily improving) over the last four weeks (20 -> 16.7 -> 15.0 -> 13.0) so maybe they've been playing better as of late, or perhaps Shough himself deserves credit for that.   Some of the language I'm hearing about Shough, including talking about how he's way above league average in several categories, makes it sound like Shough is having a rookie season on par with like a CJ Stroud who established himself as basically a Top 5-10 QB his rookie season.  Maybe that's on me though, I don't mean to attribute anything to you that I'm sure you don't agree with.
