Is Samuel in a no win situation this season?

Haven't seen Smith do a damn thing to and don't give me this he has veteran leadership. Cut him and save 5 million to go get u some more oline help. I don't care who gives me poo. He is not worth it to be sitting Samuel on the bench or bryd not making the 53. The people on here have gone crazy!

Smith ran a good route and made a nice 16 yard grab on 3rd down against the ones. You can't underestimate experience. He is needed.

I don't get this theory that Ron will control who plays on offense. Norv Turner has enough experience and clout to play the guys that give his offense the best chance to score. If I had a guess, DJ Moore isn't getting many snap early in the year. Wright won't get many snaps either. With all the speedy underneath guys and our athleticism at the 2 TE Spot. We can rotate a lot of guys in on offense. Imagine Torry Smith running a 9 route then next play you have Samuel run the same route on the same DB.

If we can keep the chains moving, our WRs can rotate and keep running at the defense. Samuel still has that backfield joker quality to him.

I think y'all are seriously undervaluing Torrey Smith. The dude has been a 1k receiver and he has the savvy to understand the nuances. Samuel flashes, but it's about consistency. I don't think Samuel is a more consistent player than Smith at this point in his career. I think you keep Torrey this year, and you cut him next.

Well....he hasn’t shown everything.  I mean preseason is preseason.  Samuel spending a lot of time vs backups and against defenses playing preseason D (which often isn’t about playcalling to stop a given play as much as it is about testing certain players with certain assignments)

not knocking Samuel though.  But I think the regular season will be an open competition.  Dudes who make plays will end up getting more time.

Funchess’ niche is about the only given.  Smith, Samuel, Moore and Byrd will be a jumble until players make plays

My opinion is that the starters should be Moore and Byrd, with Moore moving to the slot on third down while Funchess goes out wide.

Trying to explain to any of them that Smith is our number 2, period, until another receiver takes the position from them. Athleticism and potential aren't enough to do it.

I would like to see Moore, Byrd, Samuels funchess, olsen all in at 1 time. I think Norv will play thw guys based on match ups!

I think they will go with experience for starters, and neither Moore nor Byrd have it. I would expect to see a lot more of Moore vs. Byrd, as well. Get him the ball and he's a RB.

Experience can be gained on the job. Byrd showed too much last season when he played to leave him on the bench and the offense showed that 2015 spunk when he was in the game. This is the equivalent of having Smith and Ginn at the same time. Funchess could be a Moose type player if put in the right position, which isn't as a number one receiver.

Uh, that's kinda the one and only way to get it, but no matter how well Byrd and Moore perform in preseason and practice, my bet is that they won't be starting game one, and I think it's a pretty safe bet.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
