Kalil absent again

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Panthers coach Matt Kalil misses second straight practice. Coach Ron Rivera said on Sunday that Kalil was getting an injury/vet day. He didn't seem overly concerned but players typically don't get consecutive vet days off. Depth on the offensive line... http://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=21-41028448-4

Well, this Matt Kalil situation just piles on the drama and challenge to what was already a hot mess on the O line.

Put aside the fact that he sucks.  If he is, in fact, injured, we are in deep deep deep trouble at T.

Say we move Moton to LT (not his best position).  We now have to promote someone like Clausell or Sirles to RT.  Do we then have ANY backup tackle or swing tackle on the roster?  Good heavens.

I wonder if Marty is keeping Matt inside while he works the phone trying to swing a trade of some sort, though who would want / need Kalil is a mystery.

I HATE THIS for our team.  Things have been looking so promising on O with Norv, healthy & happy Cam, and new weapons, and now this absolute dumpster fire on the O line.

Please let's not focus on the "I told you so" comments.  Yes, we should have drafted OL help.  No we should never have signed Kalil.

Right now it is what it is.

The question is what on earth do we do about it to salvage our season??

This is not about money

either he’s hurt or coach is deliberately keeping him out to try other players, which as much as we would want, is very unlikely

That's the thing though. There's no actual indication that he's injured. And if you want to "try out other players", you just have him practice with the 2nd unit.

I'm sorry if I'm being over-dramatic with the phrase "salvage our season" in my comment above, but that's how I feel right now.

The domino effect we had in 2016 when Oher went down was so awful.  Move Remmers to LT where he was bad.  Start a very very green Daryl Williams at RT... and then move Trai Turner to RT when Daryl got injured.

I fear something similar is happening, though at least the season hasn't started yet.  Hoping Hurney can figure something out.

I agree and while I'm sure Andre Smith will and Kendrick Norton are going to be serviceable, there were still some OL on the board at that point in the draft that could have provided quality depth...Ryan is on his way out and Matt might be right behind him.

First thought has to be Matt is re-evaluating his career, at this point. If I'm Hurney, I'm on the phone to another team trying to shake loose a good backup LT for a 5th rounder or something to that effect. Waiting for cut day is a bad idea. Time for action is now.

I partially agree here.

They want to work Moton at LT without having to deal with a ton of questions from the press or even questions within the locker room.  Remember, this is the same staff that traded KB last year as opposed to simply sliding him down the depth chart.  This staff hates drama.
