McCaffrey doubters

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Wanted him at 8 last season, made my voice very well heard here, and am happy he's on the team.

He can do things that many players cannot, and if used correctly, can take a lot of heat off of Cam.

So far, I'm 100% satisfied with the player.

I wasn't completely happy with the pick at the time and thought it should have been Lattimore. Not saying Cmc isn't going to be good for us, but I thought Lattimore was desperately needed in the secondary, I had zero faith that Shula would know how to use Cmc, and there were some RB targets that would be available in the second that could do just as well in Shula's system.

It's 2018, new OC. I guess we finally will get a look at CmC and see how good he really can be with a playbook that doesn't look like someone threw a bunch of spaghetti noodles on a wall.

I'm still not sold on whether or not he can get 25-30 touches a game and last a whole season.  I was also concerned about his seeming inability to shake off arm tackles last year.  He seems to be doing a better job of that this preseason though.  If he can get 25-30 touches a game and have the production he has had this preseason, I'll be very happy and a little surprised.

We had a contingent of people last year who were fairly negative about the McCaffrey pick, and likewise about his ability to be a feature back in the NFL.

McCaffrey has certainly looked good this preseason. He's been used a lot, and the general expectation is that Norv Turner understands how to do that where our previous OC didn't.

Of course, as anybody who's watched football for a while knows, preseason can be deceiving.

So my question would be who among our number still doubts or questions that McCaffrey will be an effective running back this year. If so, why?

I'd also like to hear from anyone who was a doubter or a critic last year but is on board with the hype train now. What changed your mind?

Norv Turner is the difference

As some have said, it's still preseason (the same preseason that's been 'absolute proof' that we need to dump Torrey Smith), but CMC has proven that he can be a legit RB if you don't ask him to break through a brick wall every time he gets the ball. I see better run blocking to this point, so between him and CJ I predict a considerably better run game this season. Turner will hopefully make things easier, but he doesn't line up and open holes. Our run blocking last year was pretty bad.

i personally question his ability to take the hits in regular season. Yes, he gained a few pounds in offseason, but i just cant imagine him taking the kind of hits Jstew did up the middle..getting piled on like that. Maybe i am not used to seeing an Oline make holes, but damn i dont want CMC going up the middle so much. The man is too small to be that kind of power grinder (isnt that why we got CJ?)  Kid will be injured by week 5 if our oline does for him what it did for Stewert, which was more or less allow two yards only to have 1,200 pounds of men jump on your ass. CMC is not built like that!

There was doubt around Shula for certain, but there were also several who believed CMC wasn't gonna succeed.

The most common line of thinking I can remember is the one that he was only a slot receiver, not a running back. That one popped up a lot.

And many said he was too small to run in between the tackles. I'm going to enjoy watching people eat their crow this season.

I remember some of the threads about CMC being Marshall Faulk last preseason lol.

The 8th overall pick of the 2017 draft, McCaffrey became the first rookie running back with at least 70 receptions and five receiving touchdowns.

Not a bad start for the comparison.

I was one of the ones who really thought we reached a bit last year.

Kamara is good, and one of yhe budding stars in this league.  But a Lot of his success came from Sean Payton who is one of the best offensive guys in this league.  Had CMC been there he wouldve gone off as well.

To the people who say he cant be a between the tackle runner, dont know anything about being a RB.

He was a tad bit small last year but everyone has seen he has even bulked up to help muscle through those arm tackles.

There are a ton of big massive. RBs who cant run between the Tackles

Vision, patience, and know what your OL is going to do on that play is bigger than any physical traits when being a "between the tackle runner"

CMC isnt a 4.3 burner, he isnt a 230 pound bulldozer.

What he does have is the most important thing.  Vision and patience.  On top of that, knows what the OL will do on the play.  remember people talk about his work ethic like Luke, like Luke studying defenses, CMC studies know exactly what is OL is going to do.

His college film, his vision is some of the best to come out in a loooong loooong time.  He sees the holes hits its and sets up his blockers to set up a longer run better than about anyone.

Leveon Bell is bigger.  But what sets him apart more than any RB in this league and makes him as good as he is.  Is his vision and patience.

Point is, CMC is about to go Off this year if he gets the touches Ron says

I could see him with 100 receptions this year easily.

Marshall Faulk I think is a fair comparison
