Eric Washington: Something to think about

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I've said previously that I think it will take Eric Washington some time to adjust to his new job.

Some would argue he's had plenty of time by now, and I accept that the point is debatable. That's not so much my topic here, though.

To the folks who don't believe it's a transitional issue, to those who believe he just isn't cut out to be a defensive coordinator, I have a question that I'm afraid likely isn't going to make you feel any better.

How many years did it take to fire Mike Shula?

I believe Rivera sees Washington as something of a protege'. Obviously, he didn't see Mike Shula in that light. If this is true, then he may be more "forgiving" of Washington (though it could be argued that he was plenty forgiving of Shula).

The point: As long as Rivera remains head coach, I'm not so sure anyone wanting Washington fired or demoted is going to have their voice heard. I could be wrong, and Rivera might not be that attached, but that's just my gut.

And if I'm right about that, we'd all best hope that he really is just going through some growing pains and he'll "get there" at some point.

We'll see.

Wasn’t he the DL coach before getting the DC position. And our weakest spot right now is ....DL.

Having Addison in coverage 20 yards down field trailing a WR  on that 3rd down play  is  the stupidest thing I’ve seen and I’ve seen a lot of Shulas play calls.

Our defense as a whole needs huge improvements in all areas. Maybe RR needs to step in some  and leave the offense to offensive minds

He had Horton in coverage last week lol. Even worse.

Washington refuses to blitz or just has no idea how it’s done.  He pressures with our awful front 4 and drops everyone else into a zone.  QBs drop back and wait for players to sit in gaps between zone for an easy completions.  I believe Washington has no idea how to run a D.  He basically played the same formation the entire game, allowing Redskins to have their way with us.  The one time we blitz took redskins completely by surprise.  Redskims went for 4th down like 3 times... that’s shows how much respect they have for Washington D.

One thing I know for sure: The beat writers and analysts who this past offseason talked about how being the Panthers defensive coordinator was an easy path to a head coaching position and speculated whether Eric Washington would be next in line are probably scouring the internet trying feverishly to delete those articles right about now.

I have to question the scheme first. It seems the foundation is already set by Rivera. We rely heavily on zone defense playing off coverage, which makes us susceptible to quick throws. I rarely see this team play bump and run coverage. Second, I have to question the personnel. Poe, KK, and Butler are not playing well. Coach Washington can call more blitzes but when you are limited by a lousy scheme and sub par performances from key players there is not much you can do.
