Argue Rivera's case

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I've wanted him gone for years now, but going for him even if I don't buy some of these...

  • Well-respected, players go to bat for him, etc.  - - Would quickly have another job
  • Going off of that...who is out there?  Weak crop of coaching replacements, and unless Tepper loves a guy, we may not find mediocre which Rivera provides.
  • He has 2 years left on his deal.  Small potatoes to someone like Tepper, but many owners would balk at paying two coaches at one time. Especially if the rumors of Tepper wanting a big name college coach were remotely true, he'd be ponying up 15 million a year for HC's.
  • Continuity
  • Maybe this year was a perfect storm of bad.  Injuries led to OL issues, which led to Cam's injury.  Our defense is old and were led by someone completely over his head for most of the year.  Flip that and next year we hopefully get spared the injury bug, have a decent OL again, and we're more consistent across the board.
  • Tepper won't fire Rivera until he has a GM.
    • Seriously though, if we get a new HC, I would expect we already have a GM in mind.  No sense in firing our HC, only to then fire our GM, have a month long GM search, let coaching candidates get swooped up, and then leave ourselves stuck.

Fowler made an effort in today's Observer, but his argument is basically a version of the "it could be so much worse" arguments that have been thoroughly destroyed in other threads already.

I can not take sitting through another season of this sh!t show.

Isn't obvious?

We should keep Rivera because things could be much worse...

Just look what happened to the Rams, Bears and Cleveland when they decided to move on from their previous coaches.

Disasters!

Oh, wait...

Never mind.

This is actually one of the most frequent arguments I've heard people use.

Honestly, I can't think of a less inspiring reason to keep something status quo than "well, it could be worse".

Even at this point, my psyche could deal with simply being bad for a couple years, instead of the bipolar hopefulness I get every year knowing how good we should be.

It was joked about for years when Rivera came here and we poached their players, but we became the San Diego Chargers. Consistently underachieving & mediocre with some greatness sprinkled in.

Riveras' game awareness and clock management is pathetic since Day 1 and has not improved.

Riveras' initial hire at DC was excellent and I argued should actually have been the HC but since then his DC and other position hires have been in the buddy network much to this teams detriment.

He continually starts players at positions that are well past their prime or there is a better player behind that position who should in fact be on the field.

Riveras' entire philosophy does not fit in today's NFL nor does it take advantage of the current NFL regulations as put forth by the League office.

Assessing your roster, and putting those players in the best position to win does not occur with Rivera in charge.

There is no end game where retaining Rivera benefits the Panther organization. Monday next, the head Coach search must commence.

Well if pattern holds next year should be really successful.

Even year curse, leads to odd year playoffs.

2013 - Should've gone farther

2015 - SB loss

2017 - Funch drop away from beating the Saints in NO

2019 - Heartbreaking playoff loss leading to 2020 record of 7-9!

On the topic...

I forgot to mention this earlier, but a point for Rivera and bringing in someone else.  We're competing for coaches against the Packers, Browns, maybe Cardinals, and surely another team or two.  Unless Tepper knows his guy is likely to come, he'll be patient I think.

May seem like accepting mediocrity, and in a way it is.  But one year of mediocre can be handled if you know the following year your guy will be there.  It's the marshmallow test done on kids.  Eat the marshmallow now, or wait 5 minutes, and get two marshmallows.  A Lincoln Riley may not want to jump to the pros just yet...but a year from now, sure.  Owners surely gather some of this information, and I don't expect Tepper to make a rash decision.
