Argue Rivera's case

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I will give the most compelling argument to keep Rivera.

Like a company that had no President. You lose a great manager (McDermott). Then the Director of Operations leaves before busy season (Gettleman fired at the start of last season). Then your company owner has to sell the team midst a scandal. Then you lose another great manager (Wilks) who takes some supervisors with him. Then you start the year with 1 of your 2 top FA signings out for the year (Cocktrell, Poe the other). You have all new managers in major positions (OC, DC and ST), plus almost all 1st year guys across the board as defensive coaches. Then your 2 starting O-line tackles go down starting the year. Even though you start off alright, there are too many cracks in the paint to cover up the problems. The defensive back coach has to resign at the start. It seems production is slowing down and the workers are not performing up to speed at your company, why? Now, your star worker, who seems to be the connector in the company is injured and can only work at half speed (Cam). Let's throw in the medieval practice conditions (our practice fields).

How can you blame one man?

He took us to the playoffs 4 or 5 years, 2 time coach of the year (recently) and would have a job in a heartbeat. He deserves at least a year, to see it through these changes. The core of the team is good (a few plays each game and it's a different season). A few wins and some confidence is the difference between playoffs and what we are now.

He's a good man (and his family) for the city of Charlotte and for this organization and I stand by my comments.  He's a football guy, who's tough and fair and we are lucky to have him.

Only case Rivera has is there are no better options out there.

I would have been ok keeping him, if he had pulled out an ATL win, but that game was a poo show.  I really think Hurney and Rivera gotta go and Newton needs to be placed on the shelf until it's clear his shoulder has recovered...that is if it does recover.

I'm good with taking Justin Hubert from Oregon and letting him sit behind Cam for a bit, then moving on.

More surgery isnt a good thing just because. That would just add more potential for scar tissue. It not being damaged is good. More therapy and maybe get it scoped is the best news for him at this point.

There are not too many shoulders in the NFL that have endured 2 major surgeries.  While it was some time ago, I was told that by an orthopedic surgeon after cutting my shoulder open for the second time.

After my second surgery, I could not throw a football 40 yards.  But that might be because I could not throw a football 40 yards before my first shoulder surgery--and the surgery was not on my throwing arm.  Where was I??

Rivera should get another year because of Cam's shoulder.

Ron has had 8yrs. He hasn' shown any improvement in his coaching. Cam this Cam that. With everything stated he knew Cam wasn't healthy since the beginning of the season and got worse at the Steelers game. A coaches job is to prepare and be prepared.Ron is never prepared for anything.

If I had a gun to my head:

  1.

(assumption) We are going to hire a new GM, and we don’t have anybody yet firmly in mind.  That process is going to take time, and we want the new GM to be the person who evaluates Rivera and possibly hires a new HC.  We just don’t see all that working out before we get deep into the offseason and it will put us behind the power curve in finding a HC who can lead this team into the future, or,

  2. We do not want to change OCs after one year, having seen improvement on that side of the ball and with Cam under Turner.  The only way to keep Turner is to keep Rivera.  For now, this is a fair price for another year of Turner.  Note: This is a form of the continuity argument, although the continuity is in a different place.  BigDog10 hit on this, or,
  3. (if) We thought this was about an 8-8 team before the season began, and the fact they started 6-2 was a minor miracle (of course, it does not lessen the blow of 7 or 8 consecutive losses after that and the team cratering), or,

  4. Nobody can manage the clock like he can, and that simply can't be taught or replaced, or,
  5. (if true) He has mastered how Tepper likes his coffee, far better than Hurney.  “I have a source” that tells me this is true.  Of course, that same source tells me Tepper’s secretary makes it more to Tepper’s liking than Rivera, so he could be fired and we may see her wearing the “big dog” headset on the sidelines next year, or,
  6. He has 8x10 glossies of Tepper.

There are plenty of reasons to fire Rivera, but you also have to look at the dozens of blown plays(Adams allowing a 75 yard td yesterday).

What would the season have been like without players constantly blowing assignments and Cam not getting hurt...

Cam not being hurt would have resulted in 10-6 season and we would lose to either the Saints or Rams after winning the wild card game....definitely more exciting than what we ended up with.

Cam is injured....it really is a big deal...he may never recover and QB is really our biggest concern now...not coach.

I do not get the logic when people say (about Cam's shoulder) "The only problem is soreness."  you  need to consider this--does a healthy shoulder have pain?   Soreness is purposeful--you can get cortisone shots for it, but doing so prevents the pain from signalling he brain to back off, risking doing more damage to whatever is causing the pain.  When you use a word such as soreness, you are suggesting that there is healing under way or the arm is recovering from overuse--as a pitcher in baseball.  But Cam was sitting at practice, getting treatments, etc. and there seems to be no improvement, as their is with a pitcher in baseball before his manager puts him back on the mound.

Pain is real and it has a purpose, so saying "It's just soreness," Is like saying your house will be fine because "Its just smoke."

Ron was informed and he chose to have Cam play when his body was telling him that he could not do the job.

The last two games, games that would only be a detriment to the team if we won ...

Ah, so  a head coach whose job has been speculated to be in jeopardy... deliberately tanked

You weren't exactly captain of the debate team, were you?

Forget whether or not he will be retained. None of us knows that.

If you've got an argument, convince me why Ron Rivera should remain head coach of this team.

Had he talked with Cam and got him to sit earlier when it was clear his shoulder was having issues I could argue it was just a case of poo happens and our star QB got hurt. However since he didn't have the balls to do that and risked Cam's health further, as well as Greg's for that matter, he absolutely cannot use that excuse. It's kind of funny really, he kept Cam in, in my opinion, to have an excuse when in reality it might have been better for him to do the other.

So condescending. The team was clearly trying to win games and not tanking up until the Saints game. After the Saints loss they were essentially out of the playoffs.

You realize that trying and failing is actually worse than tanking, right?

No? Okay.
