The problem with keeping Rivera . . .

Chances are the Panthers offense next season will be pretty good as long as the team manages to find a credible backup for Cam.

A strong DC might like that sort of situation to showcase his talents for a HC job in 2020.

On the other hand, if things don't go well next season, a competent DC might be able to make a good case for replacing Ron in the driver's seat.

Obviously, we need a DC.  However, it's obvious to anyone with eyes that Rivera's seat is going to start out warm next season, and he's in the last year of his contract.  What quality DC would want to come here under those circumstances?  Can we even get anyone better than Washington, given our situation?  Honestly, either Rivera needs to be out or he needs to be extended if we want to have any chance of recruiting quality coaches to supplement the staff.  This seems like a really tough situation when looked at as a whole.  We need a lot of help on the defensive coaching side, and a lame duck coach isn't likely to get the sort of help we need.

Thoughts?

two ways to look at it.

DCs have done pretty well under Rivera branch of the tree.   So why wouldn't you want to come here if you are a young hot shot?

an old good DC? Well...Ron might be gone soon...so you would have first foot in the door if he didn't make it.

I mean we got Luke Kuechly.  That alone makes it attractive for a good DC.

Let’s back up a second.  Was Eric Washington demoted and we are truly looking for a DC, or is it just shuffling titles around on our existing staff and he’ll (Washington) will return as DC next year?  I don’t know that I’ve seen anything definitive.

Rivera wants a chance to make it through the season / return. No way Washington is DC again. Would hate to lose him on the D-Line if that's the case, but I can't see him calling Defensive Plays. If anything, he regressed as the season went on.

You guys are crazy...a DC job in our organization is a great gig and we can get a high quality guy

Exactly. Some people make it sound like we are trying to get a college educated person to accept a backup dishwashing position at the local grease joint.

    • When I tell people I was at that game, they usually say oh that’s so cool you had the experience. I call it soul crushing. Why? The weeks and months leading up to it were great, the team was fun to watch every week…some weeks the offense was unstoppable and carried the team (saints and giants road games), other times the defense carried the load (jaguars, tampa). Lots of back and forth games against good teams (Seattle and Indy). Good young players on the team, but the veteran leadership was incredible…from Cam, Olsen, Kalil and J Stew to Luke, TD, Norman, Tillman, Jared Allen, CJ. Role players like Fozzy Whitaker, Cotchery (he caught that MFer), Philly brown, Kyle love, AJ Klein, and so on.  The Friday before the nfc championship my wife and I after a few drinks said let’s see what prices look like for flights/accommodations and we got to talking about how much prices would increase if we waited until we found out if we would be in the big game. We said screw it, we are only out $200 if we have to cancel.  Of course we come out and just pulverized the cardinals in front of the most raucous crowd by far we’ve ever had. We had no idea what we would do for game tickets and then found out a neighbor who worked for the team could get us 2 for face value (each employee got two of their own for free, something cool that JR did).  But then the NFL mafia decided that the storyline of manning going out on top like Elway would give them more goodwill than a non traditional QB who didn’t connect with their target demo and the rest is history. I never have and never will watch that game again. I am just hoping I can see them win one in the 2nd half of my life.
    • Dude you are smart fan. 3 on 0 breakaways won’t matter who is in net. You gotta be better on this one.
    • Raiders are gonna get a good one. Rather have Mendoza fly out and play for the Panthers tomorrow than Bryce
