Mississippi State and the NFL draft

I remember a lot of similar reports about Amini. Just sayin'...

When you look up and down NFL rosters, the starting OL are dominated by P5 schools. I mean, honestly the entire rosters are but especially OL. Even more specifically, when I'm looking for OL I'd start in the Big 10. Those teams routinely produce great OL. Wisconsin, Ohio State, Iowa... probably in that order. I don't think it's a coincidence that great OL are consistently produced by the upper midwest. That's the wrestling heart of America and it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of these guys have wrestling in their backgrounds. Oklahoma is another wrestling stronghold and OU consistently puts out top OL too.

I agree, just giving the kid his props since probably his worst rep is what was being highlighted.  He's someone you wouldn't expect to be touched until at least the 4th round because he is going to need development with that step up in talent.

Oklahoma comes directly to mind for me as a school that lately just keeps churning out high end NFL Oline talent.  I'm seeing the guard Ben Powers just stoning everyone in the practices so far so he's probably the next one along with Cody Ford.

I was shocked that we got Duke Robinson so late in the draft a few years back and that he ultimately didn't work out in the NFL. That guys looked like a man among boys in college. He looked about as good as a college OL can look. Teams obviously did their homework on him and figured out something about him that led them to (correctly) determine that he wasn't a great NFL prospect.

The biggest question I have at this point about Sweat is off the field. He basically got kicked out of Michigan State. Not sure what that was all about. He had a layover at a JUCO and then ended up at Mississippi State. Now obviously Cam Newton had a similar college journey so it's not a deal breaker by any means, but certainly something that warrants some digging.

Not sure I’d consider Western Michigan a small school. They finished #15 his last year and in his career Moton played Purdue, Virginia Tech, Air Force, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Ohio State, Illinois and Northwestern outside of the MAC. Not a power 5 conference but not Alabama State.

Yeah, they're a solid mid-major, but when I say "small school" I'm basically talking about any non-P5 team. But yeah, the MAC is probably the top NFL producing conference outside of the P5.

Yep. Some people in here aren’t big on college football. Just wanted to note that Western Michigan (in 2016) is probably closer to Clemson in play than Alabama State. I couldn’t even name another team in whatever conference they are in.

Honestly, Western Michigan isn't historically even one of the better MAC teams. Marshall was dominant in the late '90s/early '00s but they're C-USA now. Central Michigan had a good run after Marshall bounced. Since 2010, Northern Illinois has been the dominant team.

Sweat is a fugging monster

After seeing him in person today

He is a Strong want.  Would fit in a versatile 3-4/4-3 as well.

I've been saying his name for us for awhile but after today he might not make it to 16 if he keeps trending up.

Showing alot of power and rush moves for a guy who some thought could be undersized

I don't mind a high draft pick at any position on the offsensive line at this point, with them being likely two since we kind of have to draft a center early at some point.

I also envision a scenerio where Matt Kalil is our LT bc the FO attempts to squeeze as much out of him while healthy as they can. I mean, this is a business after all and he was serviceable at times in 2016. (Do not @ me thought, i want him replaced too)

The defensive players at Mississippi State all seem great, too.

Being an Auburn fan, I’ve been singing the praises of Sweat and Simmons for awhile.

On Jamal Peters. I love converting CBs to S and with his size, could he be a “TE eraser” type box safety. Haven’t seen enough to know if he could handle it.

While I like Simmons, Sweat, Jenkins, and Abrams I will take a pass on Peters.  For the simple fact that we have one project CB converting to safety already. And that didn’t look very good in year one.  We don’t need a project.  We need someone to get on the field at S.  We have been trash in that department.

One, it would be a later round project type pick. Not looking for him to play immediately. Two,  just because we chose the least athletic CB in the draft and tried and failed(so far) doesn’t mean you don’t try again. We could always draft two more box Safeties because they played S in college. That’s the problem now.

    • No matter what we still need a QB2 with potential to be a QB1. Keep throwing QBs at the wall until we find someone who sticks.
    • Lot of different agendas dictating opinions.  I don’t think it was the best use of money with Hunt, specifically, but the concept of OL, I am a fan. I didn’t complain a ton because I am a believer in winning up front, on both sides of the ball. I’d rather have stout fronts than fancy WRs. I have complained some about Hunt not being worth his deal, after seeing him get pushed around in a game or two. It’s no crusade. And have complained in the context of shorting the defense.   They have leveled out the FA imbalance with the dual big signings this offseason, and it has always been the draft picks I am most protective of. Anyway The picks are the real imbalance. If you did a trade chart value of the picks we directly gave up for Bryce, and added the support picks invested for skill players, and put that on one side… then put the little 3 3rd rounders and a 2nd that the defense got over three years on the other it would be hugely out of balance. I just want the balance restored. Defense is still owed.
    • I'm one of the ones that won't let it go because it didn't solve the problem. We didn't address the center position which was a huge mistake. We were in position to easily take 2 or the top IOL. Instead of drafting JPJ over XL or Frazier over Brooks, we relied on an oft injured guard to center conversion and lo and behold, it failed as predicted. XL looks like a 1 year college wonder and an injured Brooks hasn't even surpassed Eric Shelton.  Bryce was also benched for poor performance, so the issue that many claimed was solely bad oline play wasn't. It didn't fix him bailing out of tight pockets because of being unable to see the field or him refusing to work on his atrocious footwork. Then there's the $$$. Lewis got a good guard payday. Hunt got a tackle payday. Pay tackles, draft guards, if you can.  I have no issues addressing problems through FA. It was not addressing C at all that's been the issue and still has been. Ryan Kalil was the anchor of our offensive line. We had years of solid center play and it showed. Now we're still piecemealing the center position with an expensive oline and it's still a shitshow. Why? Because the player responsible for what happens on the line presnap has little to no experience doing it. We did acquire a FA center this year finally. We'll see how much that impacts the line.  Spending on a center, whether it be through draft or FA is not bad. It's not a position that can have anyone just thrown in with no drop off in performance. A great center lifts the play of the guards on each side.  I don't like how we've built the line because we've ignored the hinge pin that everyone counts on every play. And the reality of the situation is, it didn't solve the actual problems with Bryce because those have nothing to do with the oline.
