NFL Draft genius Tony Pauline's 3-round mock draft spectacular

I have a free safety with our 5th round pick (granted, this my is pre-combine, practically no research, I don't follow college football mock draft). I'm intrigued by Ugo Amadi. He's a little undersized, but a real ball hawk, 3 int last season, 2 for pick 6's, 8 PD's, 55 tackles, 4 for a loss, 1.5 sacks. Plus Amadi returned 14 punts for 223 yards and a score in 2018. He also won the Lombardi Award, so he's obviously a good locker room presence. He's being mocked in the 6th, 7th or undrafted, but I think that'll change with the combine.  Bonus points...he played nickel for Oregon before switching to safety.

BTW, here's the rest of my pre-combine way too early mock draft. It will likely change 6-7 more times:

16 - Montez Sweat - DE, Miss State

47 - William Sweet - LT, UNC

77 - Vesean Joseph - OLB, FL

100 - Erik McKoy - C, Texas

115 -  Interior line.   We could possibly bundle with 100 to move up for a starting center, McKoy, Gaillard, and Jenkins may all be off the table by 100.  If not, lets look at guard; Prescod (NC State), Deiter, (Wis), McGovern (Penn) could all be around at 115.

154 - Ugo Amadi - FS, Oregon

187 - who really cares?

I'm not sure if we will address the TE in FA, but we need to address TE as well. This offense runs so much better when we have two TEs and even if Olsen does come back to play this is likely his last year and the fact that he may get hurt again.

Different systems. He was very good in ours. But, it's also why I thought it was absurd to make him the highest paid OG in NFL history. He was a very good OG for us, but IMO it was pretty easy to see his physical limitations. We largely kept him in his comfort zone where his relative lack of athleticism wouldn't be an issue.

Yeah but that is also more evidence that he didn't warrant that kind of contract. I think we made the right choice giving Turner the contract and letting Norwell walk for the amount that he did. It sucks in the short term but I think we can dig out of that hole through the draft. I am much, much, much more concerned about our OT situation. That has consistently had detrimental impacts to the health of our QB.

I don’t like Sweet. A tackle I’ve never even heard about at 47 doesn’t make sense. Walterfootball might not be the best but they have him #26 and 5th to 7th round. That’s why I hadn’t heard about him. I’d take Hyatt or him in the 5th as developing depth but not 47. 47 has to be a starter.

If you look at other sources, he is also listed as a late round pick. Unless he explodes at the combine, that would be a huge, huge, huge, huge, huge overdraft. He is likely more of a training camp body or practice squad guy than a 2nd rounder.

I understand why we chose Turner and 100% agreed with it at the time, but in hindsight if I could have Norwell on Turner's contract instead I'd take that option. Turner is the more talented player, but Norwell was the better player for us. I feel similarly about Star/Short. I sure wish we could have Star back on that Bills' contract and if we could I'd take that all day everyday over Short on his current contract.

Damn old hindsight...

Yeah, I can understand that. We did keep the better player in both cases, however. Turner and Short have played much closer to the value of their contracts than Star or Norwell have. Poe probably played better than Star last season, although neither was great.

Oh well, all we can do is make the best of those moves at the moment.

You're probably right, I was reaching for LT, and knew that the top prospects would be gone by 47. 5-7 round seems a bit low to me, even though I admittedly don't follow college football, but did watch a few ACC games, and Sweet looked good.

Per 247sports: "He was named to Pro Football Focus's All-Conference Team following the 2018 season. Sweet allowed only one sack, two quarterback hits, and eight hurries for 11 total pressures on 398 snaps in pass protection. Sweet had an 80.4 PFF grade for offense, 85.7 pass-blocking grade, and a 72.8 run-blocking grade, the top run-blocking grade among ACC offensive tackles. Sweet only had one penalty called on him."

Per CBSsports "Sweet shows glimpses of Edoga's plus athleticism which gives him awesome mirroring power in pass protection. He rarely looks panicked as a pass blocker. He's a ways away from being strong enough to deal with NFL defensive ends or consistently move defenders in the run game. Plenty of talent with Sweet though."

Take a look at what happened to our D without Star and what happened to the Bills' D with Star. We went from 7th overall to 15th and 3rd against the run to 12th. We basically went from a really good D to a middle of the pack D. The Bills went from 26th overall and 29th against the run to 2nd overall and 16th against the run. Star didn't put up the stats but he did the dirty work. We didn't miss what we had in him until he was gone.

Sweet leaving college was probably a mistake unless he tears it up at the combine. He was only a starter for one full season.

Well, they didn't make some other moves in the front seven as well but I do agree the addition of Star definitely improved them. I also agree that he was vastly underappreciated during his time here. I think this next season will be very telling for us defensively and in regards to how much of an impact his loss made. And, we always have the option to jettison Poe next offseason, so I think that will be a look at how they view him.

You heard it here 1st, we're taking Washington State LT Andre Dillard at #16

man if we grab him and that center in the second i'd be happy AF. solidification for years on the line. Let Williams walk, Moton at RT, Larsen and Turner at guards.

    • Here’s a summary of the JJ and Luke podcast transcript. Opening / Bryce Young Fifth-Year Option     •    JJ: Breaking news — Panthers picked up Bryce Young’s fifth-year option at $25.9M, guaranteed, coming in 2027. Combined with his 2025 salary of ~$6M, that’s $31M over two years — called it a “no-brainer.”     •    Luke: Enthusiastic about the move. Highlighted Bryce’s improving TD/INT ratios (11/10 → 15/9 → 23/11) and the value of entering year three with Dave Canales. Noted $25M is a bargain relative to the $60M top of market. Luke’s Personal Update — Charlotte Christian Football     •    Luke: Working with Charlotte Christian school football program, which hired a new head coach. Coaches include Greg Olsen, Luke, and Greg’s dad Chris Olsen (a New Jersey State coaching Hall of Famer).     •    JJ: Jokingly quipped that Charlotte Christian’s coaching staff is “the world’s greatest” — a Fox analyst, a Hall of Famer, and the best Panthers RB ever — all coaching middle school football.     •    Luke: Praised Chris Olsen’s deep football knowledge spanning decades and his ability to connect with kids. Round 1, Pick 19 — Monroe Freeling, OT, Georgia     •    JJ: Panthers were on the clock and submitted their pick almost immediately — a sign of confidence and preparation. Freeling is 6’7”, 320 lbs, played in the SEC in a pro-style system.     •    Luke: Loved the pick. Emphasized you can never have too many quality offensive linemen. Noted Freeling’s size, athleticism, and arm length as key traits. Said the pick also reflects team’s philosophy of drafting great people, not just great players.     •    JJ: Noted reporter Darren Gantt compared Freeling favorably to Jordan Gross — bigger, heavier, and faster — as a potential franchise left tackle.     •    Luke: Pointed out that young players like Freeling still have physical development ahead of them, comparing the trajectory to Christian McCaffrey’s growth from age 20 onward. Round 2, Pick 49 — Lee Hunter, DT, Texas Tech     •    JJ: Panthers traded up from 51 to 49 (pick swap with Minnesota) to grab Hunter. Played audio from Panthers area scout Kaden McLuhan, who scouted Hunter.     •    Scout Kaden McLuhan (audio): Said Hunter’s size is immediately striking, and that everyone around him spoke glowingly about his character, energy, and love for the game.     •    Luke: Praised Hunter as a massive (6’3”, 320 lbs, ~34” arms) two-gap nose tackle who fits perfectly in the Evero defense. Compared his prospect profile to Akiem Hicks. Said having Derek Brown, Bobby Brown, Derrick Brown, Terson Wharton, and now Hunter creates varied body types that stress offensive linemen.     •    JJ: Noted Hunter ranked third among all prospects in run-stuff rate and sixth in interior pass-rush win rate — addressing a perception that he couldn’t rush the passer. Rounds 3–7 Highlights     •    Luke: Highlighted WR Brazle (3rd round, 6’4”, 437 speed, 1,000+ yards at Tennessee) as the vertical threat the offense needed. Also praised OL Sam Heck (5th round) as a technically sound player whose “short arms” caused him to fall but who has proven himself.     •    Luke: Mentioned CB Will Lee (6’1”, 33” arms) fits the Panthers’ DB prototype — big, long corners.     •    Luke: Praised S/LB hybrid Zaki Wheatley (5th round, 6’3”) as a big nickel similar to Trayvon Merek.     •    Luke: Excited about the linebacker competition between Devin Lloyd, Trevvin Wallace, and Claudin Cherless.     •    JJ: Noted Panthers had the #1 “steal/overreach” rating in the entire draft — drafting players lower than consensus big boards projected. Around the League     •    Luke: Admitted being “a little jealous” that the Miami Dolphins drafted LB Jacob Rodriguez (Luke’s favorite LB in the draft). Has personal connections to Miami’s coaching staff (Jeff Hafley, DC Shawn Dugen — a childhood teammate).     •    Luke: Also noted Miami’s selection of OT/G Kaden Proctor out of Alabama, who will likely move to guard. League Trends — Bigger Tight Ends / 12 & 13 Personnel     •    JJ: Observed the NFL saw its highest run rate in ~11 years (~52%) and a notable pivot toward big blocking tight ends in this draft.     •    Luke: Explained the cyclical nature of NFL offense/defense evolution — as defenses get smaller to match spread offenses, teams counter with bigger personnel (12/13 formations), which then forces defenses to get bigger at the nickel/“big nickel” spot. Called it an ongoing arms race.
    • Dan Vladar is their best player and that is going to be the difference in the series
    • Nothing about the Flyers scare me. They are a mid team that just barely made the playoffs.
