OBJ TRADED TO BROWNS

I’ve been telling y’all for the longest. Gettleman’s method is essentially a Ponzi scheme. He just keeps kicking that winning can down the road selling the team on the idea that they will be better tomorrow once he builds it the “right way”. Tomorrow never comes and there’s never a real plan, just getting rid of talent to lower expectations.

to summarize,

the giants get a 1st, 3rd, and a safety to replace the one they just traded. they unloaded a spectacular talent that is rumored to be a diva and headcase while eating $16M in dead cap. now the giants have enough picks to draft plenty of young talent while unloading big bucks.

the browns have enough cap space to add serious talent to build a championship caliber team around their young QB. seems to be a win/win for both parties.

my friend in the giants head office told me this morning that "teams win championships not individuals (like baseball)." i told him i liked the trade and he said, "i' haven't started my car yet today, so hopefully there's no surprises hidden in it for me."

i offer that commentary as evidence that the higher ups in the giant's office are happy with the trade but know the fans are not.

Humpty Dumpty is grossly incompetent and was never GM material. He will be fired again and then he can go back to what he knows-scouting.

The only people that believe this was a good move for the Giants are the DG apologists on this board.

Lol ... 2009- 2010 was the start of that with Jake's contract .. Wow way to show you don't have a clue..

And everybody knew after 2012 season that this team was close to turning the corner..  Win total was increasing and they ended the season strong with most of their losses being from TD or less..

That's why Gman when he came in himself said this was a good roster.. Gave alot of credit to Hurney and didn't fire many if any of Hurney's fo staff, scouts or coaching hires..

So please keep thinking you know what you're talking about when the actual actions of your savior were very different...

wtf does gettleman retaining scouts have to do with JR and hurney giving out tens of millions in signing bonuses like candy?

what does the delhomme contract in 2009 have to do with richardson overspending on his own players to prove a point that he wasn’t cheap after leading the charge of nfl ownership combating the NFLPA over the players’ share in 2011?

what does everybody “knowing we were going to turn a corner” have to do with being 15 mil over the cap after a season wherein the team started 1-5 for like the third year in a row?

get down from the grownups’ table and go sell your bullshit stories to someone who doesn’t know any better bc i’m not buying it.

So to play devil's advocate here:

The giants will now have over 100 million in cap space next offseason to build a team around a young QB they most likely will acquire either through the draft or through trade this offseason.

This was a long term move, not a this season move. Yes they are eating a ton of dead cap this season, but it's on a bunch of horrible contracts that Reese signed before G-man got there (and the one from OBJ that Getts signed himself). He has since already rebuilt the o-line and added a generational talent at RB. The money will be used to build the defense back up, and probably sign a decent WR next offseason.

They know Eli isn't the answer long term, and they are setting the team up to make moves to surround their future with talent.

This could just be a step back this year, and a potential step forward next. Especially if they trade up to #1 and take a QB, or trade #17 to the Cards for Rosen.

it's also been heard that the owner pushed this. Browns have a small window despite a young team in regards keeping them all together.

If they don't win within the next 2 years, that team is going to be BLOWN UP. No way they can keep all that talent on long term deals. It's win now moves that aren't necessarily bad. Hopefully for their fan's sake they produce on the field.

This is exactly what is going down here.

You don't keep Eli and not draft Sam unless that's the owners wishes.  You don't sign OBJ to that massive deal unless it's the owners wishes.

So....DG was likely told to sign OBJ, keep Eli (2 time SB winning QB), and make one last run....that would have been the 2018 season.  That was a disaster....obviously.

Now it's time to fix the mess.

Shed contracts, no long term big money deals this offseason, try like hell to shore up the O Line, and prepare to draft a QB this year, or next.  Personally I would be on the next year train.  Tank like hell this season....tank for Tua.

Now you have a ton of cap space, your franchise QB on a rookie deal.  A generational RB.  A decent to good O line that could get even better this year with all the draft picks they have.  And a ton of young hungry players for one of the best organizations out there.

Sound familiar?  It's what the Browns have been doing for a few years to prepare for this.  It's what the Rams did to prepare for last year and this year.

The Giants weren't winning poo this year...it's time to finally tear it all down and start over....something that we should have done for Cam when he was drafted.

It's what the Browns have been doing for decades. Tanking doesn't guarantee success.

All they had to do was replace Eli. They had the right pieces.

Nah man, that O-line was hot garbage last year. Eli had some of the shortest time in the league to throw before he was hit. Throw a rookie QB into that situation and you have a recipe for David Carr 2.0

Look at all the rookie QB's last season that they could have drafted. Not one of them played better than Eli. If they had drafted one, they could have been damaged goods moving forward.

Granted, they could still have OBJ in that situation, which would benefit any young QB in the long run, but it seems like management wanted last year to be Eli's swan song and it didn't pan out.

Also....I'm just gonna toss this in here since we all know how NFL players respond....especially those who tend to catch passes.

How are they going to manage touches in CLE next season.

You HAVE to throw OBJ the ball.  You HAVE to throw Jarvis the ball.  You have to get Chubb involved...not to mention Hunt when he comes back.  And you have the TE in Njoku.

This could go very good, or very bad....quickly.

    • Derrick Brown was one player I never called or even suggested was a bust . Dude was young and hadn't even hit his stride. It takes time to learn the position. The thing I appreciated about him is that he kept improving season after season. He got paid and keeps on going like the Energizer Bunny.
    • How many teams coddle their QB the way Bryce has been coddled? I have never seen any other team in the NFL EVER baby a QB the way that Bryce has been.  Bryce was named day 1 starter his first year. It was obvious he didnt deserve it. He wasnt ready as evidenced by the worst rookie year in NFL history.  So let's move to year 2. He's named starter again with no competition in TC and is benched 2 games later. We have the ghost of a backup in Dalton who is so bad he can only beat Vegas and let's remember, the only reason he lost his starting job was a car accident, not because Bryce actually beat him out in practice.  And year 3. We sign Dalton again, who already proved he couldn't be depended on to put an even remotely passable performance on the field, and bring back Jack Plummer, who was even worse than last year. It was obvious he was nothing more than a pretend body in an attempt to create an illusion of some type of attempt to find a backup.  Then we start again with garbage play again and Bryce gets benched with a phantom injury, and the ghost of the ghost of Dalton breaks his thumb on the first drive and craps the field all over again. If we had actually made an attempt to find a legitimate QB2, it's possible Bryce doesn't step on the field again. Bryce is not agood QB and if we had any other mediocre QB, our record would be the same or better.  Bryce is not entrenched. He's been placed, protected and sheltered from ever having to face a  real QB competition in TC. Richardson and Levis both were ass and both were benched and eventually replaced.  Do I expect Baker to face competition in camp? Sure. I expect Tampa to find the best QB2 they can at price that fits their cap and resources and system and get him up to speed. If he's better than Baker, and if he's better by a significant margin, that's best for the team. The ultimate goal is a Super Bowl. Bellichek was constantly getting QB2s with the GOAT as his starter. He knew the value and that was realized when Cassell led them to an 11-5 record as a backup.  You and I may think differently than the people that matter but I will say it again. If you're afraid to bring in a capable backup, especially after the debacle of last year. The starting role wasn't earned, it was given, and that's loser mentality.
    • I would have done the same thing.  LSU is a much better job than Ole Miss.  Plus the enormous contract and every advantage a college team can offer in terms of recruiting and facilities and tradition etc
