Panthers.com Pushing The Case For Gaulden

And that’s never translated to wins for us...especially not in recent years in the secondary.

I thought we were supposed to criticize Ron for sticking with the vet and not playing young talent.    So confused on what the narrative is.

Gaulden is likely not starter material yet but why not give him a chance till he proves otherwise?  Signing someone who is moderately better will show him that they have no confidence in him before he takes a snap even though they have been saying we really have confidence in this guy.

There will be someone available if the situation is as bad as we think.

Ronnie Harrison and Justin Reid were 3rd round safeties that same year and they started 8 and 13 games respectively. We had both of them in for visits. Moore was a 3rd rounder as was Walker. Moore started only 2 games but he was a CB. Walker did about what Gaulden did, but we didn’t appear to have any interest in those two. Out of the 3 we were interested in, we took the one with the worst results and least starts. 3rd rounders aren’t instant starters but they can be if you make the right pick.

You're acting like we had no choice with regard to how many starts and results he had. That's something that can be controlled.

Gaulden was a bad pick. We should have moved up (Reid went 17 picks before) or taken Harrison instead of a what position will he play/least athletic DB at combine guy. Both guys were on our radar and both guys counter your 3rd round instant starter comment, but we took Gaulden

I remember hoping that we would pick up Gaulden from the 6th Rnd. I realize that most coaches think they can improve rookies and that’s reasonable. I would agree with you that the curious thing is that better consensus prospects on pre draft boards don’t get jumped on by the Panthers when they slide. Chauncey Gardner this year...

I think that’s one of Hurney’s flaws at the draft. He locks in on certain people and then gets worried and overdrafts them or ignores other guys slipping.

Yes, and following the draft this year that seems to be the case with at least 4 guys who were telegraphed. In my opinion he didn’t overpay for any of them and got the guys I think he wanted.

I can agree with the position picks on the first two and like the potential in both. My fear is that they may take some time to find their fit rather than being ‘plug and play’. I thought we wouldn’t address FS though I hoped otherwise.

I think an obvious trend from the Panthers is that they are very cautious and slow, or to put it a nicer way deliberate in their handling of players especially rookies. Therefore we shouldn’t be surprised that Gaulden is still the apple of their eye.

Whats weird to me is that some players rise to the occasion but still seem to have a glass ceiling (I’m thinking Moton) while others really seem to be shall we say inconsistent but seem to have a clear path to the team no matter what (Colin Jones).

I get red shirting especially OL in their rookie year but overall I’m not a fan of this policy.

Huh? No idea what your new point is. The other two got starts because they played well enough. In Reid’s case he basically started right away and finished as PFF’s 20th ranked safety. In Harrison’s case, he ended up starting half the year on the #1 passing defense. We weren’t the #1 passing D and Gaulden couldn’t crack the lineup with an old and bad in 2018 Adams.

You were using his lack of playing time as justification that he's going to be a worse player than Harrison and Reid. I'm not saying he won't, but there's a precedent of rookies here not getting an adequate chance to perform.

My point about third-round picks was that they often don't come in and immediately contribute. On draft night, look at the threads and posts of people whining that we wouldn't get an instant superstar with our third-round compensatory pick because we used it on a backup quarterback.
