Gaulden trying to turn corner from rough transition

Rashaan Gaulden has basically been dismissed by many Huddlers as a wasted pick ever since he was drafted. I will never be one to draw conclusions about young players (especially premature ones) based upon virtually no work. I think that every player is different and will overcome the transition to the pros at their own rate. Jourdan Rodrigue's latest Charlotte Observer article touches on the difficult time that Gaulden has had learning how to be a pro.

“'This offseason, I took some time to myself, just to really reflect,' he said. 'Also to look at the aspects at which I got better on and off the field ...The constant coaching I got from (veteran players), I was able to just really see, really reflect on what those guys were talking about, (and) how to really carry myself as a pro.'

The struggle for Gaulden has been real, people, but it's nothing abnormal. Gaulden certainly didn't make his struggle any easier after "accidentally" laying out Jarius Wright during training camp last year.

"Gaulden, clearly horrified by the hit immediately afterward, was chastised publicly and angrily by a few teammates. The video was shared by a blog, and then began to circulate widely across the country.

“'I just hated that it had to be Jarius,' said Gaulden. 'He’s one of the coolest dudes on our team.'

"Gaulden retreated a little into himself in the months that followed, not really because of the hit — though to this day he grimaces when he discusses it — but because similar lessons in humility kept coming throughout the 2018 season."

We all know that Gaulden was basically a work in progress simply from his absence on the field last season. He obviously wasn't mentally (and thus physically) prepared to seize the safety job from an aged Mike Adams, or any job, really, during his rookie year, but he had a role model that arrived a little late on the scene.

“'(Eric) is just a really good guy to look up to,' said Gaulden. He said that the way Reid arrived so game-ready 'off the couch' to Carolina in Week 4 was a huge lesson in understanding how he needed to study his craft, and prepare his body."

So now Gaulden has a good handle on the expectations of a pro. This is his second off season, and it's apparently showing---at least in OTAs---as more than one observer has reported a positive impression that he has made thus far. We'll really see what Gaulden has as a pro when the pads are on in August.

I'm rooting for him. Dude has INTENSITY which is something we lack in the secondary outside of Reid & Donte. Need some swagger.

Rashaan if you're reading this just know that HBO's The Wire is greatest TV series of all time.

We really need him to be greatly improved or we really need to sign some help. There definitely seems to be a concerted effort by the Panthers and their beat writers to push him. We'll see...

A good player doesn’t need to be hyped. I expect he’ll get the job and be average.

Really pulling for him

I dont believing in condemning rookies with a bad D coordinator calling plays along with 0 pass rush

Actually it will be Fewell to get the most out of Gaulden. He must like him because we didn't draft one high. I am hoping adding Fewell who was a DC in the past will improve everyone in the secondary.

I would love to see improved secondary coaching. It seems like Norman has been the only DB who has actually developed considerably with the Panthers over the past decade or so and even that was a very rocky process along the way. We have really struggled to develop WRs and DBs, even the ones who have came in and shown early promise.

How many first round DBs have we drafted in the last decade? Norman was a fourth rounder. The highest has been Jackson and Bradberry who were both second rounders and they did great. You have a better point with wide receivers given the problems with Funchess and Benjamin

I'm simply talking about development.

Good grief man, you're so hell-bent on arguing that you even try to argue when someone is trying to agree with you. LOL!

You are the one who went into two different threads and quoted me within five minutes of each other. You seem the one who wants to fight. I am simply supplying my opinion and facts where they apply.

    • Another layer to that is Ive seen Seattle has been in the market for CB help this off-season.   Michael had a higher PFF grade than Horn who got 15 games this season. He wants to be here too, that's a huge bonus for any 5 win team that had awful pass rush.  The 7th rounder Michael Barrett didn't last long on Seattle, he was cut before the season I think and ended up on browns PS. He's already been on 5.......5 teams within one year.......
    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
