Good morning, Cap Space

the dead cap for kalil is 9.8 but it is split over 2 seasons.

Not trying to be that guy, but all the reliable cap sites I go to say otherwise.  He counts $4.9 million against the cap this year and $9.8 million in 2020.

This is great news regardless if we sign McCoy or not. Im sure their will be another solid player get cut before the season. If that happens we easily have the cap space to go after that player. We can also make trades for big salary players who could be on the trade block.

*So for the people all in on McCoy don't get to sad, we could still be players down the road

This is basically where I am.  Would I love McCoy to be in Carolina?  Yes.  But if he picks somewhere else, I like how we are set up with a decent amount of cap space for going forward.

Last year we were cash strapped and we had so many questions about multiple positions (including our entire offensive line) going into the season.

Now?  We have breathing room, and only FS is our major concern.  Sure, some of our moves may not work out.  But we won't know that until it happens.

Managing the cap and player's contracts is like a chess game, you HAVE to plan even beyond your next move.  It's hard to think Hurney was oblivious of the cap implications for Poe and Short in the near future.  My only thought is he plans to let Poe play out his contract, let him become a FA in 2021 and that would give him two off seasons to find a replacement.  The only problem with that is if we draft a rookie next year for the D-line, that's one less year of development.

I wouldn't quite say its one less year of development.  DLs rotate a ton.  Its not like some positions where you play 80-90% of snaps.  We didn't have a single DT (that includes K Short) play more than 60% of snaps last season.  Its a reason why you want to be so deep at DT compared to other positions.  Even the back ups play 40% of snaps.

Any idea that wastes 10M on Dontari Poe in 2020 is not going to work.

Hurney may not see it as a waste.  I, on the other hand, disagree unless Poe suddenly blossoms in the 3-4 scheme.  He validated very little of his contract last season.

For what, we already let McCoy walk. If he was signing here we shouldn't have let him leave. Don't give me we had to wait on Kalil's money because we could have made it official without that.

This is clearly inaccurate considering McCoy walked from all three teams he is considering. Makes since for him to want to look at the odds of winning. I would say that Ron Rivera is most likely the most exciting defensive coach to work with of the three.
