If Christian McCaffrey Is The NFL’s MVP, Why Aren’t The Panthers Better?

Stats like these belong in baseball.  I tried reading the article but it was like having dildoes shoved in my eyes.  Other players are looking at CMC like he’s a unicorn.  That, and watching, is all the proof I need.  Whoever wrote this should put down the calculator, open the blinds and find a person to interact with.

It is better for baseball for sure because of the sheer amount of data.

But every NFL team is or will be using stats just like this. Two open job listings for the panthers:

It may not be relied upon like it is in other sports but it is being used.

Great.  It still makes for retarded articles questioning the poo you can see with your eyes.

Yeah 538 is great at what they do, but it’s still important to keep in mind they are statisticians first, not football analysts. We can probably trust that their numbers are good but not necessarily their football conclusions reached from them.

At anytime you have expected points (EP). If you have first and 10 from the opponents 20 you might have an EP of 3.5 for the drive - you expect to end up with 3.5 points on average. If you run the ball 8 yards for 2nd and 2 from the twelve your EP is probably going up to say 4.0. That play gave you and expected points added of .5.

You can then say what is the expected points added for all our running plays, or passing plays or whatever you want. EPA on third down, EPA in the 4th quarter, EPA when Cam rolls right.

They article is saying that CMC's EPA on running plays is negative somehow.

The amount of hysteria over this article is entertaining. Maths are hard for the general public.

Neither of those listed jobs have anything to do with what happens on the field.

Both are for business analyst positions which are meant to figure out how to extract the maximum amount of benjamins out of fans of the team.

My nephew does analytics for the Yankees. There are only 5 guys in the entire crew. One live is Tampa, 2 live in New York, 1 lives in Philly, and my nephew lives in Lansing. They communicate almost daily, and get together, twice a month.

I was amazed that there were only 5 of them. I would have thunk there would be more.

Also, believe it or not. They would get a ring if the Yankees win the Series. That would be cool.
